Early morning poll.

Postby Regidoc » Thu Jun 15, 2006 12:58 pm

So, what's the first thing people do first thing in the morning?

A lot of people grumble and stumble downstairs to get that precious cup of coffee to wake them up in the morning. I'm not a coffee person myself. I've never had coffee, probably never will. I usually jump in the shower first thing. that usually wakes me up enough to last the rest of my day. What do you guys do?
Oh FAILblog, how you brighten my life at work

I usually get up, sit in front of my computer...grumble...and then lay back down for an hour.

I lay in bed until the last possible moment, until there is no time to grab my coffee. I rush around like a mad woman getting ready and then speed off to work (thankfully less than 10 minutes away). I then grumble when I get there because although the coffee is waiting for me, I have things to do before I am able to get it. Then finally, at just about this time, I relax, have my coffee and a quick bite (pop tart or similar) and prep for the rest of the day.

I've never been much of a morning person, but lately the mornings have become my most aware point of the day, it seems. I think I have borderline narcolepsy, or something, because I find myself falling asleep the rest of the day no matter how much sleep I got. (which is, interestingly enough, the exact same problem one of my friends just recently got diagnosed with)

But in the mornings I wake up, stand up, SS&S, and if there's time I'll tap away at the computer and get my thoughts together for the day while sipping on a cup of coffee (I usually don't have more than 1 or 2 cups, I'm not a whole-pot coffee drinker, but the caffiene is an extra little kick that helps for the first half of the day).

Exception being Tuesdays & Thursdays now, with Good Morning Rubi-Ka, I gotta be up and prepping no later than 3am. It's an interesting dynamic, but if anything it's helping me maintain a somewhat normal sleep schedule. (i.e. not staying up until 3am accidentally and suffering for it the next day)

My mornings usually start with Tasty calling to wake me up way to early. :P Then I talk for a moment before drifting off to sleep again. Then my alarm clock usually goes off like an hour and a half before I am due at work.

Depending on how tired I am I either A) Get up, take a shower, have breakfast and watch some TV, or B) get up like 30mins before I am due to work and throw myself in the shower, get my stuff together and rush to work. Since I ride a bike or walk to work I am pretty alert when I get there. I don't drink coffee either, and I am in the process of formulating an evil policy to forbid it at work, much to my coworkers dislinking  I don't think I'll success though ;)

My weekends I ususally sleep in until my body thinks I should get up which can be anywhere from 6am to 4pm, unless I have some specific thing I want or need to get done, then I adopt the time I get up :)

During summer I start work Mon-Sat. at 10am. So I usually sleep until 9:40, then crawl out of bed and into some clothes, and head off to work.... where I stare around blearily for about 1 hour, trying to reach the point of rest where I am sleeping while still listening for people driving into our store lot, and regretting that I stayed up so late on AO the night before. If I'm lucky, I have a chance to leave and get breakfast... but that doesn't happen all that often. Sunday I usually sleep until 1pm... whenever I naturally wake up. And then it's time for lunch. Breakfast and I have been trying to cultivate a relationship for several years, but things just don't seem to work out for us. No coffee for me, because that takes, you know, time, which could be spent sleeping.

I know, exciting and healthy, huh? I've been semi-successful getting to GMRK (as in, I've been awake for at least part of each of the official shows) and I actually enjoy having time to do things before I leave for work... may have to rehaul my schedule.

And, of course, this will all change half-way through August when next semester starts. How fun! ><

A shower is usually the first thing I do...unless it's a day off. I've been known to have my "bum days" on weekends or days off. I'm NOT a morning person at all. I hate them. Muchly.

Post shower, it's usually scrambling to get ready for work and hit the commute. I then need about an hour at work to actually get the brain functioning. Those who enter my office before that hour get assaulted.
I may be retired, but I'm GridStream for life.

Am I the only one who thinks morning sex is a form of torture? Sorry.. the title of this thread made me think of that..
Anyways, I work from 4pm-12am in a government office, so my day consists of : getting up at 1pm, getting ready while sitting at Trade Grid (in ao) and browsing forums, heating up coffee already sitting in the pot from the morning , taking a shower , doing whatever to my hideous hair to make it look decent, then running out to the bus at like 2pmish. At that point a whole busload of high school kids are crammed onto the bus and my eardrums are tested by shrieking girls. Then after work I nurse my paper cuts and aching wrists and then hop onto ao where I do absolutely nothing with my froob lvl 94 doc and zone out cuz im too tired to go to bed, that lasts till about 4:30am -5am. Then it starts over. :?

My mornings don't exist. I'm on summer vacation now so my average wake up time is 12:30.

If that still counts, though, I take a shower, eat my fruit loops, brush my teeth, then log on to my MMO of the day.

I still suffer from sleep problems. Never could sleep much and my mornings aren't any different.

I wake up, but because I'm still in that semi-sleep state, I seem to just lie there. I can't quite seem to care about anything when I wake up. Nothing worries me, and regarless of how much it has to be done, I don't do it... I just am.

I can lie there for a few hours sometimes. Sorely regretting it when I finally start moving. But untill I do, it's like I'm in some sort of torpor.

The only thing I've found that can get me up, is if something happens right beside me, but out of my reach. For that reason, I've got 3 alarm clocks, each placed further away, with 10 min differance in the wake up call. And my cell is always moved so I have to sit up to reach it. Otherwise, I rather fear I could spend all day there.
And it's not even like I ponder about stuff or anything. I'm fully conscious. I'm aware that I'm late and all that, but for some reason, it just doesn't register. It's like I'm dreaming... But I know for a fact that I'm awake. Still I percieve it as a dream...

I can't sleep at night either. It's the same odd state. But mornings are my nemesis. Cus then I have to move ^^

Other than that, it's the same old "Oh fuck I'm late" rutine once I get moving. Grabbing what ever is closest, washing quickly, and running out the door, still zipping my pants...

I'm curious tho'. Anyone know what it is, or know anyone who "suffers" from a similar thing? When diagnosed, they tell me it's nothing. Just a bad sleep rythm and laziness. But even when I've had jobs that demand me up at 4am, I still can't sleep before 1am. It's as though I only truly wake up when it's dark. Just dunno what it is... :?

Have you tried light therapy? I suffer mildly from SAD during winter periods, and as I never have time in the mornings to sit in front of a lightbox for an hour or whatever, I got a light therpay alarm clock instead. It simulates sunrise over a 30-90 minute period, and ends up pretty bright. I

t's not infallible as a wake-up device - I have to use a noise based alarm as well - but if I set the lamp clock, I wake up vastly more energised and ready to get up and do things than if I don't. (In my natural state, I'm a slave to the snooze button.) Even now when natural daylight is breaking at 3 am, I still find I wake better if I have the SAD lamp waking me than if I rely on the light that makes it through the curtains (I have dark curtains cos I sleep better the darker it is.)

The lamps also usually have an evening option, so you can wind down your cycle when you need to sleep. I've never tried that - I think it's aimed more at shift workers that need an artifical sunset - but might be useful if you have problems getting your body to switch off at night.

They're not cheap, but they're getting cheaper as the general awareness of SAD is increasing and the lamps and lightclocks are growing more widespread.
