Hehe.

My mom tried to "diagnose" me with Asperger's many years ago(she's a RN, so it's her life's goal to find out what medical condition everyone has), and tried to put me on herbal supplements. o.o

Thankfully I don't adhere to the major points[read: symptoms] of AS. But yeah, I think it's probably easy for someone who MAY have it, to not realize it.

Originally saw this site some time ago. I first heard about Asperger's on a 20/20 episode years ago. I became convinced at that point that I had it. But after reading this site and others similar I'm pretty sure this isn't true of me. While some things definately are right on target for me, other things are way off.

Though I once had this conversation with a counsellor:

Me: "I think I have Asperger's Syndrome. Is there any way you can test for that?"

Her: "Why do you think you have Asperger's?"

Me: "Well as you know by a number of things we've talked about, it does seem to fit."

Her: "Why is this important to you?"

Me: "I want to know what's wrong with me. Can't you test for it?"

Her: "Why don't we go back to some of the other things we've been discussing. I don't think you're ready to be diagnosing yourself at this point."

I think I only attended another session or 2 before I decided she was worthless.

I belive lots of the hardcore mmo'ers can have things in common with that diagnosis. But that dont mean they got it, fortunately.

I was always an puzzle for my teachers, none had an clue, i was bright, really bright, disliked sport as other kids loved (i had hard astma too), not socially active really, etc. I heard about it from an psycologist i talked to, when i belived i was getting an standard "what job fits you" thingy.

On common IQ test i show up as really bright, on both the old knowledge and logical hybrids, and modern logical ones as Raven's, used by mensa.

On tests as used by psychologists, i show up somewhat different. Im actually quite ok with relating to ppl and understanding them, and even know an person or two, one i think seems to have way worse symptoms in relating to ppl, but who got health care relatives and is an "family genius", more or less. Here i live, noone know what it is, and most think an guy with logical/analytical IQ in the mensa spectrum is an autist if he isnt able to do fast heavy work for some reason, ive worked at an "sheltered worplace" as an worker, and helped autistic ppl, with help of an proffesional who even have written psychology books, and noone at all thought about asperger, and later, an foregin psychologis i go to for "job consulting" while unemplyed suddenly confirm all i know of myself.

Yes, i got horrible hand-eye coordination, and do extremely detailed work, as paining, shure, but SLOW.
Yes, im somewhat unsocial, and seems to prefer playing games in front of going out and "party". I do read ppl's body language, but i didnt really before i was 15-16 do it good i think. I knew to read before i started school, and that is typical asperger, too, in some cases, i have good memory, and i think i memorised written words, and learned reading trough memorising often used words, as whole, and understood simple sentence structures that way.

Famous ppl who got it, is among Dan Acroyd, actor, Bram Cohen, maker of bittorrent, and lots of highly educated ppl, among such as Richard Borcherds who is mathematician.

Some got potential. shure, but unfortunately not all. Some got average skills, and lots of problems, too. I simply got an mild "case" on the border, and some skills above average, so im quite lucky, though.

Even though you have aspbergers you are still my friend Gridfan. =D

I also have another friend with aspbergers. His keyboard was actually used by økokrim as a lecturing tool about hackers. But he's coping all right although he has an educatinonal and epmloyment issue because of the syndrome.

I doubt Gridfan has Aspbergers though. He just gets caught up in his things. =D How's the thumb? :D

Heh, after the IQ scores, i should have been the brightest kid in class, the IQ scores showed me as above average, and i was probably as bright as my teacher when i as 12-13.

Thats the point, IQ really dont show anything other than an limited form of skill, and, in real life, i can see on ppl, judge, and figure out how to relate to him/her. Im more prone to miss judge an person on internet, and for some reason, i have blown up some treads.

Am i an sony fanboy as some claim on AO forum? not at all. So, what do asperger give me of skills? the ability to learn anything i want, i knew what DSM IV was before going to him, and agreed with him in its better than the european ICD 10( i saw the american book on his desk, quite special since its officially not used here and i didnt saw the official one).

So, how do i fit in? ive not spoken about computers or any special topic to anyone exept proffesionals in real life, thats the thing wich i got in common with the diagnosis, i can rapidly learn and speak about an topic, and i love solving problems, and puzzles. Most aspergers got an fasination with something, i frankly dont really. I loose interest if i get no feedback, wich is the unusual.

I can rapidly learn theory to an proffesor level, and then loose steam when noone understands me, wich is the reason this is called the "proffesors syndrome" in norway. I can some about everything, and i once suprised an african refugee when i was curious about some details about customs in inner somalia, and knew suprising things, but for me, its natural, just parts ive seen in books.
