This image is my current desktop image...and, seeing as how I really never get tired of staring at her, she'll likely be there awhile.

Well, we have a winner for Tarryk's new home desktop. They'll never let me get away with that at work. :)

Bah. She's blonde and has no chest. No thanks. :P
And where are the Tzimisce in that game? I think I'll stick to playing Gauntlet and Super Dodgeball on MAME ;)

Here's my windows desktop. I'll post my linux desktop later.

(first one is my current, second one is what I had before this one)

What's that nifty toolbar on the righthand side of the screen, Dec? Looks Mac'ish :D

I *HATE* the Windows GUI. Just 5 seconds of looking at any default Window's interface makes me want to wretch, so I tweak the hell out of my system and pretty much nuke anything that looks even remotely close to Explorer and the gawd-awful start menu.
The menu on the right is Stardock's ObjectDock, and it mimics Mac OSX's dock bar perfectly. I love it. My most-used apps are there, it's clean, it's smooth, it's very very useful (unlike the way too cluttered start menu) and I wouldn't give it up for anything.

I also run Stardock's Windowblinds, so that I can skin/theme windows in ways that window's can't natively (and I can windowshade open windows, a'la Mac as well). Something else I wouldn't live without.

My Start menu is still on, technically, it's just hidden at the top of the screen, and my windows quick-launch bar is hidden at the bottom. But, with the Run command (windows-key + r) and prog shortcuts, along with the ObjectDock, I never use the Start menu anymore. And I like it that way :)

Isn't Stardock awesome?

I mean, I haven't been able to live without their products for 3-4 years now. Mmmm.

My only concern with getting that is system resources.

Back in the day, I really liked to tweak my desktop out with the Litestep Wharf stuff. Until I realized that my system was actually becoming LESS stable because it was running on top of the explorer process. So I dropped back to the classic desktop.

Now, seeing that desktop (AWEsome wallpapers, btw, Deca), I'm interested in giving full-conversions another shot, but still wary. What kind of resources does that take up? I don't have much if any to spare.

I usually kill the ObjectDock when I'm on the air, but only because AO is running as well, and only as a "just in case". There are several times I've forgotten and left it on with no issues whatsoever.

As for the Windowblinds skin, I never turn it off. I have select apps like the AO client excluded, (so Windowblinds doesn't skin it) and it doesn't slow me down at all. The theme/skin you use can effect that a lot too. I use Camps Korilla, and it's the most functional, clean, and fast theme I've seen.

I used to mess with Litestep a lot too, but never stuck with it for long just because it wasn't solid enough and liked to crash a lot (not to mention a system resource hog). Stardock really did it right with Windowblinds and now the ObjectDock. Give em a shot, at the very least. They're worth a look.
