If you haven't read the books yet, I recommend them. I'm not a book reader at all, and so you can imagine taking on this monster of a book was a challenge at first.
It goes a bit slow, and is very long. The last half is better then the first half, it gets better as it goes along. Watching the movies first helped me to understand the who's and what's of the story a bit more. Definitely worth reading, just give it a chapter or a half chapter a night. At first, I didn't think much about it. By the end of the book, I was sad to see it end.
I feel bad for anyone that really cant enjoy both the book and these films. You have to look at them from the right perspective, and not go too "hardcore" about trivial details. The movies will never replace the books, which are the original source.
The books can never accurately be made into a movie, because to make it completely accurate would make it 280+ hours long and full of some stretches that would be totally boring to watch on a screen. In the book, those scenes all work.
Enjoy both. We have both at our fingertips, to enjoy and appreciate. A lot of hard work went into both the books, and the movies. Take what you want from them, just like any other form of art.
