Yes, the movies are awesomme, amasing, and generally leave you breathless the first time round... BUT!
Gimli did NOT have to become a damn comic relief character... It was uncalled for, and generally unecessary!
The siege is on, the gloom of doom is upon them all... And Gimli cracks a joke...
The gates are about to crash, the Uruk-Hai are almost breaching the walls... And Gimli cracks a joke...
The one man army Aragorn (Since when did he become a one man army in the books?... Come to think of it, since when did he become the key figure in the story at all?) and Gimli rush of to defend the gate... And Gimli cracks a joke...
WHY?!? Why, I ask you?... Was the book funny?... Did it NEED these comic scenes to keep us drawn to it?... Was is NECESSARY for Tolkien to make an arse of the little guy? (the cheapest trick in the book)...
NO! So WHY did we keep reading it?... Cus it was a bloody great story! So why the hell does Steve Jackson feel he has to ridicule one of the followers like that, just to draw a crowd?... I know it has to appeal to all... But honestly, F**K 'em! This book didn't get popular by selling out, it got popular for being what it is... A great book!
Most of these people hadn't even heard about it untill it was a movie, so why the hell should it adapt to them?... These people see the movie, and suddenly start commenting it like their oppinion actually counts...
I'm sorry to sound like a cynical, moody lil' git, but I'm sick and tired of people, crowning this movie the best ever in the world, and not even having read the damn books... Further more, how can they judge a world, they've not even scraped the surface of?...
There was a time, when reading this book had you marked as a looser and gimp in general. Where knowing about this great world, that facinates so many of us, would have you judged before people even knew you. When liking this stuff actually ment you had to have some sort of independance and sense of who you were, as a person. To not care what they thought...
But now that it's mainstream, everyone want's a cut and a say... They sling it around, and don't even know that Sheelob should have been in the end of the second movie... Not the beginning of the third.
The day they hold the two up against each other, and say som'n else than:
"Well, the movie was nothing like this, this book is boring..."
That day, and that day alone, will I respect their oppinions... Untill then, they can f**k off and worship what ever boy band is trendy at the moment, and get the hell out of a world, that clearly is too big for their narrow little minds to cope with!
And on a side note, I'm done with being politically correct and givin 'em all a chance... F**k 'em!
