This debate can go on forever... And although I promised I wouldn't get into this again, here I go...

1)
Yes, the movies are awesomme, amasing, and generally leave you breathless the first time round... BUT!
Gimli did NOT have to become a damn comic relief character... It was uncalled for, and generally unecessary!
The siege is on, the gloom of doom is upon them all... And Gimli cracks a joke...
The gates are about to crash, the Uruk-Hai are almost breaching the walls... And Gimli cracks a joke...
The one man army Aragorn (Since when did he become a one man army in the books?... Come to think of it, since when did he become the key figure in the story at all?) and Gimli rush of to defend the gate... And Gimli cracks a joke...

WHY?!? Why, I ask you?... Was the book funny?... Did it NEED these comic scenes to keep us drawn to it?... Was is NECESSARY for Tolkien to make an arse of the little guy? (the cheapest trick in the book)...

NO! So WHY did we keep reading it?... Cus it was a bloody great story! So why the hell does Steve Jackson feel he has to ridicule one of the followers like that, just to draw a crowd?... I know it has to appeal to all... But honestly, F**K 'em! This book didn't get popular by selling out, it got popular for being what it is... A great book!
Most of these people hadn't even heard about it untill it was a movie, so why the hell should it adapt to them?... These people see the movie, and suddenly start commenting it like their oppinion actually counts...

I'm sorry to sound like a cynical, moody lil' git, but I'm sick and tired of people, crowning this movie the best ever in the world, and not even having read the damn books... Further more, how can they judge a world, they've not even scraped the surface of?...
There was a time, when reading this book had you marked as a looser and gimp in general. Where knowing about this great world, that facinates so many of us, would have you judged before people even knew you. When liking this stuff actually ment you had to have some sort of independance and sense of who you were, as a person. To not care what they thought...
But now that it's mainstream, everyone want's a cut and a say... They sling it around, and don't even know that Sheelob should have been in the end of the second movie... Not the beginning of the third.
The day they hold the two up against each other, and say som'n else than:
"Well, the movie was nothing like this, this book is boring..."
That day, and that day alone, will I respect their oppinions... Untill then, they can f**k off and worship what ever boy band is trendy at the moment, and get the hell out of a world, that clearly is too big for their narrow little minds to cope with!

And on a side note, I'm done with being politically correct and givin 'em all a chance... F**k 'em!

/me counts her arrows, strings her bow, bounds up onto the wall beside Oddy and flashes him a grin.

That's right, Oddy. You have captured another bone of my contention with that set of silly, fluff-filled movies and the fans that seem to love them SO much.

They totally ruined the themes of the second book with their poncy, hair-flinging, dwarf-joke-cracking pop-targeted nonsense. In the end, none of them looked very heroic or admirable. They made the protagonists their idea of pretty and made them WEAK compared to the figures in the book. Dwarves weren't funny, man. Dwarves were bucky badasses! Especially Gimli. And what happened to the FREINDSHIP between Gimli and Legolas and the fact that it was about as unheard of in that setting as Isreali Jews partying down with Palestinian arabs?

But alas! My friend, we live in a world where all deep and thought-provoking content must be removed in a transition from literature to movie and heros and villains alike must have their claws pulled, dumbed down and made either some retard's idea of super-sexay or the butt of some running lowbrow joke.

We are alone against the armies of the evil overlords, Oddy. Heft your intellectual axe and stand fast! I'm with you.

If/when they make an Enders Game movie, if they cut out Petra or that kid who he got into a fight with in the beggining or make Madrid not a hardass or make Graff a hardass, or anything along those lines... well... well... *pulls out remote detonator*

But my lord! An army of thousands, hundreds of thousands, would be needed! :D

Oddysee, the aragorn comment...well, let us keep in mind he is the son of Isidiur, as well as the rightful king of Gondor, so I think he is a key figure...overall though, I agree.

Hell, I did not read all of TTT and I noticed the dwarf tossing to be needless humor.

We need not hundreds of thousands, for such numbers are but a waste!
Give me but a thousand men, crazy enough to invade hell, and by god, I shall do it!

Gimli more then the others had a comical wit to him. They sort of did that aspect up a bit more in the movies. I wish they had shown him more as the grand fighter he is.

In the books, he was at a party basically and talking to someone...I think it was Eomer. Anyway it roughly went something like:

Eomer: Gimli, what would you do if someone said Galadriel wasn't the prettiest in the land? (Gimli had the hots for Galadriel)

Gimli: Well, I'd get my axe.

Eomer: I know someone prettier...

Gimli: Brb with my axe

He said it in jest, but with that "Gimli seriousness" that makes the moment funny. It was two friends talking about girls. :)

Just a lot of little funny and witty comments all through the books were made by Gimli. It totally fit how he talked in the movies. But I agree, during the battles the comic relief should drop and he should have been shown as a better fighter.

Well, here's the deal woth taking great book to movie...

Hollywood gets involved... end of story.. they seem to think they should make something better that was already great by itself, and therefore end up ruining it for all those that loved it.

I admit I never read the books, but I never said it was the greatest movie ever made.. Its not my favorite or even close for that matter.. I think the movie was good, and I want to see the second adn third ones, and I am probably going to end up reading the books, because if you say that they are far better then the movie.. I take your word for it and would like to find out as well.

I don't know why though.. Hollywood just likes to screw up good things, like books. Changing the story around to make it "what the people want" when in the end, all the ture fans wanted the story as it was, only on screen. I have a feeling that any of us could have done a book to a movie even better then they did. Mainly because we are the fans.. how many of the producers, writers, directors, etc. that did these movies read the books? (I'm sure the writers probably did, I have no idea who any of the people are that did them)

Ok anyway.. I'm done ranting...
/me goes back to playing with her cute little leet that she took off RK with her :P

Before anyone unecessarilly flames jassel, I'll say it! Steve Jackson was a fan himself... So he has read them...
That said, he made some choices that were uncalled for!
Yes Gimli had a sense of humour, the same sense of humour you'd find in a pub in Scotland. It's rough, and dry... Not, "I can't see over the walls"
If that's the humour you want, watch a bloody cartoon on Cartoon Network, cus it doesn't fit in a LOTR movie!

And as deathangel says... Gimli more than the others had a comical relief to him... So uhm, why was he the ONLY one who was ridiculed?... Cus he was the smalest, and it was the easiest...
The dwarves are now looked upon, not as a proud race of warriors, but as a bunch of small, chubby dumb people, with beards...
It's BS! Plain and simple BS!

It's not the only liberty taken tho... How many of you, who havent read the book, would think Frodo was:
A) 25 when Bilbo left
B) 50 when he himself left?...

Or that:
D) The journey lasted several years?

I know some of this is unecessary information, and would slow the movie down, but I just find it funny to think about. That so many complain about what the fans are on about, and don't even know the true story...

I know a lot have read it since, but I'm afraid to say, I deem it impossible for them to see this in the same light, as they've seen the books as how they are compared to the movie, and not the other way round...

That said, he made some choices that were uncalled for!

He was making a movie based on the JRR Tolkien trilogy. Any fan would say that that is uncalled for, in and of itself, nullifying any silly beefs people might have with the series just because they eat LoTR Breakfast Cereal and drink LoTR Diet Soda.

Quite frankly, I walked away from both movies looking at Gimli as quite the badass; wise, understanding, and ready to utterly destroy you in combat.

It's not the only liberty taken tho... How many of you, who havent read the book, would think Frodo was:
A) 25 when Bilbo left
B) 50 when he himself left?...

That would depend on how many people gave a rat's ass. Die-hard book fans? Maybe, but they're not worth my time, nor were they worth Steve Jackson's. Seeing as how it's perfectly impossible to make everything fit the book perfectly, he took liberties that he felt made the film more asthetically pleasing as a cinematic production. EXACTLY as he should have done.

How old did I think Frodo was when he left? My honest answer: "Considerably younger than Bilbo." If I wanted an exact age, I'd go look it up. But as for myself, and any other non-obsessive fan of the series, we really truly don't care.

Or that:
D) The journey lasted several years?

My take from the movies alone was: It was a long and arduous journey. It took a couple hours. That's how long the movie was. :)
