Gary Gygax

Postby Tarryk » Tue Mar 04, 2008 8:59 pm

Gary Gygax, the original creator (or "co-creator", as many insist to put it, but definitely the biggest known name) of the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop roleplaying game, passed away today.

Taking the analogy from the AO forums, Mr Gygax was to tabletop roleplaying games (and the subsequent standards of stat-based MMORPGs) what Newton was to modern-day physics.

It was his time, but some tributes are definitely called for in the near future. This is the guy who practically set all the known standards for all the RPG's we play today, from terms like "AC" and "XP" to the post-Tolkein standardization of Orcs, Dwarves & Elves in fantasy roleplay settings.

RIP, Gary.

Guess he rolled a 1 on his save vs. death...

(I say this with the utmost respect for the man... Just never was much into that whole mourning thing... Celebrate who they were, rather than lamenting your loss.)
I've stopped fighting the demons in my head...
We're on the same side now.

Isn't enough to know that I ruined a pony, making a gift for you?

Wulf, Gary would have approved of your response, I'm sure of it.

It's a sad day for the origins of tabletop RP.

or perhaps he rolled a natural 20 in getting into heaven and thought he better go now before he has to do a holyness check? :P

Hope some of you folks caught Stephen Colbert last night (or night before that). He mentioned Gygax. (loosely remembered dialog) "..and he'll be missed...How much? (rolls a dice and looks back up)... 20."

Well said Stephen, well said...

Yep! Stephen is impressive. Kinda makes you wonder. what would have happen had not the Dem's turned him down. O.o

But yeah, hilarious and I'm sure Gygax would have liked Stephen's farewell :)
