I left WoW after my guild got SSC cleared. We had TK and Hyjal and the Black Temple left to raid. But 5 hours a night, 5 nights a week, to spend weeks on single boss encounters, with the hope that a minor upgrade will drop, and maybe you will win it, it got to be too much. Kara was "fun" but after that, it becomes just plain silly. 25 man raids, where not a single person can make the tiniest of mistakes, or you wipe. You spend A LOT of gold to requip, buy new pots and food, etc for raids, and spend even more on repairing your gear. You simply can not do this, hold down a full time job, and compete. RMT (buying gold online) is an option that many, many use, and it is the "unspoken" rule of endgame guilds. When I blew through 3 months of gold I had made honestly in 2 weeks of raiding, you have to ask yourself if it is "worth it". To me, real money to buy fake money was not.
When BC came out, I could have fed myself on the tears of those that had raided MC, BWL, Naxx, all to replace those timesunk items with green quest items in the first zone. And don't even mention all the mote farming they introduced that requires massive timesinks to collect tradeskill, base materials.
I think they will be doing the same with this xpac, and it will drive more people away. Guilds were destroyed when BC came out, and things have been going downhill since, despite them saying "9 million players!". More rep grinding, more mat farming, yay! No thanks. My org in AO is over 4 years old. In 8 months of WoW I was in at least 6 guilds, most of which blew up.
At least in AO, when they released LE, they didn't invalidate all the highest level gear, most importantly the AI armors.
Woot for WoW ranting! (pulls plug)
