It won't be long until they ban carry-on luggage entirely... and then, to keep people from smuggling bombs or whatever in their pockets, they'll make you check in all your clothes too. After all, it's perfectly possible to strangle someone with a thong.

Yeah, see, much as I'm no fan of our present "government" and much as I agree that this is probably overkill, I have to kinda' agree with these measures being taken. Sure its a great big pain in the ass. But if they did nothing and some terroist ended up blowing up a plane by mixing his "toothpaste" with his "contact lens solution" we'd all be up in arms as to why nothing had been done to prevent it. Its kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't scenerio. Frankly, I'd rather seem them err on the side of caution.

One more reason to put on the list of why we're driving out! Not to bad of a drive from Michigan though. :D

I don't object to a couple of days of strict measures while they check the evidence, interviews with suspects etc against intelliegnce received. I would object to it lasting beyond that though... security concerns shouldn't ride roughshod over everything else. (After all, liquids may be a risk, nail scissors may be a risk... but the one thing that all these attacks/attempted attacks/rumours of possible suggestions of attacks have in common is that they all involve people. So the best way to keep flights as safe as possible is not to let any people on them at all.)

I certainly DO object to the way people are being advised to run around like headless chickens and FEAR THE TERRORISTS! Of all the things to be scared of in this world, terrorism is the least significant in comparison to the amout of hype it recieves.

There's a Terrorism Risk report from a (apparently fairly right wing) think tank at Ohio State University called "A False Sense of Insecurity?" doing the rounds. The main conclusions it draws are:

 Assessed in broad but reasonable context, terrorismm generally does not do much damage.

 The costs of terrorism very often are the result of hasty, ill-considered, and overwrought reactions.

Interesting reading - online as a pdf here:

Samuel L will be upset they don't restrict those motherf**king snakes from his motherf**king plane!

sorry me bandwagon -> ::jump::

And why don't you all see the solution to these restrictions. Simply freeze all such liquids.

But mr airport security guy, this toothpaste is frozen. It's a solid now.

But maybe that was the plan all along... all this liquid explosive stuff is just a cover... the real danger was that somebody might freezer their toothpaste into a sharp and deadly stabbing thingie!

Either that or the real fear is of dehydrated snake eggs...

And really you can take lots of liquids on the plane anyway. Just ingest them before the plane ride.

(And I'm not just bitter about this because I might have to do without my books if this alert carries on. Definitely not just that. I might also have to do without my duty free booze... )

I saw this artical and thought it wrapped up the whole thing pretty nicely.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060810/ap_ ... NlYwN0bQ--

The plot may be foiled and liquids banned. But imagine what would be banned if the plot succeeded. :? (I mean, aside from the deaths.) At least airlines are allowing you to bring these in your checked bagage.

But still, little by little, I am seeing American freedoms eroding for security. :?

Yep! This is way overkill and pointless really!

Don't the experts know that (just like someone joked earlier) a book
(yes even the pages) can actually be coated with explosive chemicals.
Money can be treated the same.

Even syntetic materials like most clothing is made off can be explosive.
Like a handkerchief or scarf or underwear that turns explosive or acidic when mixed with urine.

Let's hope Bush did not see Otori's post earlier cause we could all end up flying naked indeed as that would be the only solution. *laughs*

Altough when I think about it, it would be possible to digest solid and liquid solutions that once the body has digested actually change their properties.
so a quick trip to the toilet during a flight, mix the "solids" and "liquids" and you got a variant of plastics.
Sure they may never be able to pee ever again, but some of those terrorists are suicidal so what do they care?

I know, let the planes fly empty, no pilot either, pure autopilot, and no luggage or cargo either, cant trust those.
People just line up at the airplain ticket line, buy a ticket then go home and burn the ticket as the plan takes off. Yeah thats the way!

er·ror Audio pronunciation of "terror" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (trr)
n.

1. Intense, overpowering fear. See Synonyms at fear.
2. One that instills intense fear: a rabid dog that became the terror of the neighborhood.
3. The ability to instill intense fear: the terror of jackboots pounding down the street.
4. Violence committed or threatened by a group to intimidate or coerce a population, as for military or political purposes.
5. Informal. An annoying or intolerable pest: that little terror of a child.

Ever read a dictionary Mr. Bush? They've won, there is a reason they are called "Terror"ists ya know.

I'll just bring my laptop, jeans, a t-shirt, and buy beer when I get there. Oh other liquids aren't allowed? Bah!
