Gen-X'ers Created Your Utopia

Postby Tarryk » Mon Feb 13, 2006 5:06 pm

I was recently sent this in an email, and I agree with it, but it needed some changing, so I rewrote. And therefore I can now call it mine. Bwaha. :)

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning .. uphill BOTH ways..yadda, yadda, yadda And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in heck I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But now that I'm passing the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia! And I hate to say it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it!

I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog! GRR THE DEWEY FREAKIN' DECIMAL SYSTEM!! And "Online gaming" didn't exist until we were in our late teens, and even then it was at best a one-on-one deathmatch in some ascii-driven game on a local area dial-up bulletin board (and only the 'puter-savvy hacker-types even knew how to get there).

There was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter ... with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!

There were no MP3's or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the damn record store and shoplift the CASSETTE TAPE yourself! Or you had to wait around all day to TAPE it off the radio in mono and the DJ'd usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up!

We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister! And there were no cell phones, only beepers, and they were all carried by doctors!

We didn't have any fancy Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics!! We had the Atari 2600! With games like "Space Invaders" and "asteroids" and the graphics sucked ass! Your guy was a little square and your joystick had only ONE BUTTON! You actually had to use your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! ... Just like LIFE!

When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the same height! If a tall guy or some old broad with a hat sat in front of you and you couldn't see, you were just screwed!

Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 15 channels and there was no onscreen menu and no remote control! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on!

You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel and there was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little rat-b*st*rds!

And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up, we had to use the stove or go build a freakin fire .. imagine that! If we wanted popcorn, we had to use that Stupid JiffyPop thing and shake it over the stove forever like an idiot. That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled.

You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in the early 80's!

Regards,

-The Original Gen-X Crowd, UNITE!

Still no Call Waiting here, and hardly anyone has Caller ID boxes here either. We only got cable 5 years ago, and we still use TV guides. We have remote controls though :P

Still, it's probably much worse in some countries...

and we didnt get out of school when it snowed a little and didnt have air conditioning in our schools or churches either.. we didnthave someone driveus every where we rode bikes or took the bus ..but ontheother hand a candy bar was much cheeper and hell gas was affordable..thier werent as many kids with guns and LSD was the drug of choice AiDs was the new Killer and we thought only GAYs got it most babies were born healthy and not addicted to drugs Sex was something you did with maybe one special someone not every one you met and hit it off with.. Very Very true Kids today are spoiled but they also dont have the morals or the Honor we were given or learned Kids today think Money and NaME BRANDS are the thing that matters most and are never satisfied with last years model Todays youth survive on plastic and have no idea how hard it is to earn a dollar they are handed a creadit card a cell phone and sent to mall the play grounds are empty no more hop scotch basket ball jump ropeing marble or jack tornaments what happened to the kid centers with activity directors games other kids and sat night dances where you met and hooked up with other kids now they sit home one thier computers and play or talk or chat and never meet face to face with thier best freinds ... so Utopia well maybe in some ways but well I think a lot of the old ways were so much more rewarding.. Just my take on things Love you Tarryk and as you get older your stories will be told more often its the way we Old ppl are and one day the kids of today will be saying something smiular to the teens of the future

I feel like I fall into the crowd bitching about the new generation, primarily because of my location. We didn't get a lot of that stuff until is was in high school. Heh, we had old Apple computers in school. I didn't really get the internet until I was a junior in high school, and that's only because I went to a Magnet school.

Hmm.

When we were young, we climbed trees, lightpoles, cars, front porches and anything else with wild abandon. We hung upside down 30 feet off the ground from a branch without our parents getting every "child behaviour expert" telling them that we were dysfunctional etc. We also fell down from the said trees, hitting every branch on the way down, before we ran home to mom, got the scrapes and cuts cleaned, kissed and covered with band-aids with Donald and Mickey on them, before it was out and do the same.

We rode our bikes down the steepest hills we could find without thoughts about what would happen when/if we crashed. We did the same on our snowsleds in the wintertime. Every huge pile of snow looked more like a swiss cheese than a snowpile after we were through with it, and in the summertime, we built sand-castles on top of eachother below the tidal-belt at the beaches. We tried to set depth-records while diving, and we tried to see who could hold their breath for the longest in the bathtub and in the water. We hunted crabs, got sunburned, fell off bikes, trees, porches, see-saws and everything else.

And we loved every second of it.

Right now I miss it, and want to go back. Or just climb a tree *shrugs* Life as an adult is boring (apart from that you can legally get shitfaced drunk AND have sex :P)
