Another FOX WTH are they thinking?!

Postby FoxyJama » Thu Jan 19, 2006 3:50 pm

Fox has announced that in addition to cancelling "Arrested Development", an Emmy-winning show, that they will also be cancelling "Malcolm in the Middle" (with a Series Finale scheduled for May 18th) and "That 70's Show".

From the station that cancelled such hits as "Family Guy", "Futurama" and "Firefly"...

What gem will they cancel next?

In other news, "American Idol" was renewed for a 5th season...

I gave up questioning them. They are their own stereotype. A bunch of suits in a meeting, preaching to each other what will sell and what won't, without giving a damn about the quality of the show. They won't change, even when such stereotyped facts are thrown in their faces, the FOX executives simply smile and nod like the smug little buckets of corporate slime they are.

Yeah, I don't watch TV at all. People look at me funny when I say "if it's not on DVD, I don't watch it and I don't care." But it's true. I really just don't care at all.

Besides, I've got shows I care about coming out my ears on DVD right now. Fox is not a concern :)

*wanders back to watching Firefly, The Shield, and 24.*

I also only watch these shows when they come out on DVD, but the cancellation of the shows affects even that (eventually) once you run out of episodes to watch.

In a recent interview with the Daily News (new york news paper), Steve Harvey (whos' morning show just kicks soo much ass right now) sated:

"Television is a funny world... You can get cancelled even when the ratings are good"

IMO, the only show in the bunch you listed that I think should move on was "That 70's Show" - great series, but not everything can go on forever.

Wait... You mean ONE channel had ALL of those!?
Man... I'd actually consider starting to watch the telly again if that was here... Add Black Adder and Red Dwarf reruns and I actually would!

So what I'm wondering is. Can't these shows just go to another channel?... I mean. Futurama could, if it wanted to, finance itself with it's popularity. Why does this have to be their end...? Or is there somethign about the yank media I don't quite get? (barring of course: Everything.)

Yes, other channels can buy out syndication of shows if they make bids to the producers to do so. Cartoon Network bought syndication rights to both Futurama and Family Guy, for instance, although Fox bought back the rights to air new episodes of Family Guy for a short time.

And yes, all of these shows *were* on one network. The network that has become known for cancelling the best shows they manage to get their hands on... all the while continuing to support shows like the OC.

Well, if you listen to what the "stars" have to say, they wanted to do something new soon. On "That 70's Show" Ashton and Topher had already moved on, which I admit could work, depending on writing since that show was more of an ensemble show. Whereas "Malcolm in the Middle" without Frankie Muniz is just "Some crazy bitch mom with a wierd family" They've both been around for many years, and very few sitcoms in the US nowadays last beyond 5 years even without the dumb-ass FOX suits involved, and 70's Show lasted 8, and I think Malcolm lasted 6.

Fuck your TV, fuck it right in the ear.

Networks are businesses and are therefore all about the money. Since the dipshits, morons, lemmings and idiots greatly outnumber the intelligent populace, the networks will do what the lemmings want and the lemmings will want exactly what they're fed because the network tells them they like it.
TV is fucked. There are some exceptions, but we've already noted how the truly great shows get cancelled because they're not as paletable to idiots. Rather than letting an cable box feed me a intellectually devoid Happy Consumer Meal (tm), I'd rather feed it to the garbage truck.

With Topher Grace (Eric) working on two movies now, Spider-Man 3 and Cockblockers, where he some how is going to play the role of Venom in Spider-Man 3, he's probably going to be busy for a long while and wouldn't be able to make new That 70's Shows eps, and with Ashton Kutcher doing his own thing now, it just isn't going to work that well.

Ah, Futurama.
When Fam Guy made a come back, there was talk that Futurama should follow. For me, it was The Simpsons replacement. The Simpsons have become more than Old Hat. More of, Old Rag. And Futurama was new, creative, topical, and funny!

Natch, this was not enough apperently. And the Simpsons contenue to reign.

Yes! Futurama>Simpsons. Good news though - there may be new episodes of Futurama in the future, as for what format those will appear in, I'm not sure. But h00t! :)

I definitely miss Futurama. That's still a favorite of mine. I've yet to get tired of a rerun.

Honestly, neither Malcolm in the Middle or That 70s Show has been any good in several seasons.

Fox's problem isn't in what shows it cancels - it cancels the shows that aren't getting any ratings. The problem is that they horribly mismanage shows in the beginning - moving timeslots, putting them up against ratings juggernauts, no advertising budgets for cutting edge shows, not giving enough time for an audience to develop, etc, etc, etc.

This horrible mismanagement leads to poor ratings, and the poor ratings leads to the axe. I don't think, of the 5 years it's been on the air, Arrested Development has been on at the same time and same day ONE time. Hell, it usually moves several times during the year! Firefly was cut before it had time to generate an audience, and was in a horrible timeslot to begin with (9pm Friday? Who the hell watches TV at 9pm Friday? If I'm anywhere near a TV it's movie time). Family Guy was moved several times before its first cancellation.

As for only watching once it comes out on DVD... well, then, you're kinda part of the problem. If a show doesn't get ratings, TV stations can't charge much for the advertising time. Without the advertising revenue, it's not worth it to put the shows on the air. Buying DVDs sorta helps, but DVD revenues are still a drop in the bucket compared to ad revenues, so the networks don't generally weigh DVD sales all that high.
