Put a sock in it all of you!

"I'm not happy about this," said Vigo, who had walked a couple of miles downtown from her home on the Lower East Side. "It's too cold to walk this far."

A couple of miles is NOTHING!

There are of course serious repercussions from a strike like this. But the majority of people affected by this strike deserve to stretch their legs a bit.

Such is the way when the system collapses. As we every day up the standard on our greed this is what we get.

A couple of miles in New York City? I think distance is magnified there. That's like 30-40 blocks isn't it? (wildly guessing)

Walking 2+ miles to work in NYC in the winter at 6am is NOT a picnic, I don't care who you are. It's not like a casual stroll on the beach in Miami.

In Soviet Norway job walks two miles to you!

Still it's hard to feel sympathetic too people who just had to walk to work.

Especially when this is the view from my bedroom window. And the black splotch is my car.

In some circumstances I can agree that a long walk through extreme cold isn't pleasant. But I thought New Yorkers were harder than poor Vigo.

1 mile NYC blocks is about 20 to 30 blocks.

here's the thing, we're not just talking about Manhattan (i.e. the city), but these are all of the boroughs (which is all of NYC). Brooklyn is the size of two manhattans, you can fit chicago and clevland in brooklyn alone. So my possible walk to work in 30 something degree weather with 15 mile per hour of wind would be about two hours (yes I've one it in the summer - but I also walk fast) - that's two hours of freezing my ass off... yeah fek no.

There's a reason why NYC public transportation is the most complex... and now it's just been shut down... wheee!!!! NOW I wish I could drive!

[edit]hard to feel sorry for people in other cold places when we get the same type of weather[/edit]

[edit2]Understand this is NYC, we do our best to get where we are going... but yaknow, this sh*t is crazy, some people's jobs center 'round the transportation[/edit2]

*hugs Nexeus* I can't even begin to sympathize my friend. All I can do is empathize. I've never been there. Living in northern Maine, we don't have "public transportation" other than a bus for the elderly and the local "gouge you" taxi service.

*hugs Nex again to keep him warm*

Pray it's over soon, hon.

That sux Nex. Alot of people were upset here in Sweden when the subway went on strike there. It's hard to commute when one's primary transportation is shut down. I feel with you Nex.

I am fortunate enough to only have a 15-20min walk to work... and I love the cold :)

And considering a lot of people don't have cars, walking is the only alternative. Besides, where would you park them? Having attempted to drive through Manhattan, I can attest to that being an exercise in futility. Especially trying to get on or off the island.

Hopefully you don't get socked with the cold weather tonight that we had this morning in Cleveland... 7 degrees with wind chills well below zero when I woke up this morning.

Quite obviously posted by someone who's never seen NYC. Walk the length of manhattan then come back and talk about lazy New Yorkers.

FFS, look what you've done. Made me defend New Yorkers. :p

And for what it's worth, the strike was resolved this afternoon and the workers are back to work tomorrow.

Yes it was. I am just a lonely norwegian who before he had a car had to spend two winters riding a bicycle around 2.5 miles in as low as 0 degrees to get to work. I once slid on the ice with that bike landing on the lump outside my ancle (whatever the medical term is for it) thus giving me the next day off. So it was totally worth it!

And after all the latest dealings all over the world one should think people had begun to appreciate life a little more. "Or else the terrorists win". But alas yes it has been over for some days and all has returned to normal. We are once again all happy friends.

What I don't understand is... If that's the end you go to the bathroom with... Do you also walk down the street on your hands?...

Translation for those who don't get it: Man you talk a lot of sh*t!

Yeah, we all have snow. Yeah we've all had to walk. So what? That doesn't mean he can't complain about it. If our transport system mucked up I'd be complaining. Yeah, it could be worse, but we pay taxes so it doesn't have to. What kind of attitude is that man... "You can't whine cus I have it toughter"...

Meh, if that were the case, why are you whining over a bike accident? I had a dog tear half my face to shreds, I spent 4 hours in emergency surgery with NO anastethics and NO pain killers cus they couldn't get hold of the right doctor. I had my face stitched back together and I had eye surgery... No drugs. You don't know pain, what are you whining about?
Fact is tho, this isnt' the case. Something happens to you that doesn't usually happen, and shoulnd't happen... And you have every right to be unhappy about it.

Glad you don't have to walk anymore Nex... Sucks when you're dependant on them to get through every day, and they then muck up.
That and by God, cold or no, I'd not want to walk 2 miles through NYC... Not with all the stuff we hear about it eh. Heh, dunno if it's that bad, but I aint in no hurry to find out

[Edit]
Sorry Mijk... Didn't mean to bite your head off like that. Just dropped by cus I was checking my mail anyway, and I guess you caught me a lil' off guard there... Anywho, I'm gettin ready to go back to Europe (DK) to the coldest period we've got... And i'm leavin australia in their warmest... God damn, is christmas always this warm here? It's ridiculous! 38-40 degree's... And I'm headin back to -2... *cry*
