Ew that smell!

Postby Vallikat » Thu Nov 03, 2005 9:56 pm

So yesterday I'm sitting in the living room talking to my mother when we begin to notice a rancid smell. First thing I did was check my son's book bag. So I find his sandwhich that he never ate was still in there, but this doesn't seem to account for the stench. Still I threw it away and then thinking better of it, took the bag outside. We still smell the smell.

So the search begins. We start looking under and behind furniture for anything that might be making this smell, to no avail. Further it seems be getting worse and filling the house. After a bit we begin to realize that it seems to be coming through the heating vents, so we figure we'll let my dad deal with it.

Dad comes home and begins his own investigation. Letting his nose be his guide, he finally locates the source. Hang on to your hats, kids.

It seams a squirrel has climbed into the outside exhaust hose leading from the clothes dryer and was unable to climb back out. We'd been doing a bit of house cleaning yesterday. I would say a minimum of 5 loads of laundry were processed through that dryer during the course of the day. So as you can well imagine the squirrel was, in a word, toast. Ick.

The entire hose was disposed of but it still took some doing to really remove the oder. Ok, so I'm sure the smell doesn't rival moose guts being baked in your car. But it was still pretty rancid.

Just felt like sharing to rid myself of some of the trauma of this situation. :)

You might be able to sell it as food to some folks in the backwoods of some other state. I hear Toasted Squirrel is a delicacy.

I used to work at a cemetary, when the mausoleums got "ripe" we used to use cinnamon sented things such as spray, candels, and such. It seems to kill off most bad smells. oh and...ewww

Bats we've had as well. If you feel like searching, I'm pretty sure I posted something on here about it.

Yup and this is a slightly better picture of it Forget what species it is of the top of my head. *looks it up* Oh yeah, forgot that I think it is either a Northern Myotis or a young Big Brown Bat

Valli,

To try to not have the same problem again in the future, ensure the dryer duct has one of those flap-valve things that only opens when the dryer is active (you probably already have one, just checking). After that, I think they make screen kits that go on the outside, but not sure. Ask in your local Home Depot, Menard's, etc.
Eww, there's a Camel Spider in the fridge and it ate all the bagels!!

Thanks for the advice. :) This is my parents house which I'm just temporarily occupying. My father did something to fix it today but I have no clue what it was. Hopefully this is the last time this happens. But really, so far as I know it is the first time and they've lived in this house 35 years.

In my house, the way the ventilation was (prior to damage done by hurricane Ivan) we had a squirrel get inside (admittedly our fault as the grate covers over the ventilation holes were in bad shape, and obviously had some holes) we didnt know the squirrel was up there til one day I had to go into the attic to get a couple things we store up there.

well to make a short story shorter, Im up in the attic, which isnt a full attic btw, no floor just 2x4s with insulation in between, and cant stand up all the way. Grabbing hold of this box that the squirrel had apparently been living under.

It made some gawd awful noise, and took off running. needless to say I dropped the box, screamed like a little girl and nearly fell down the ladder to the attic trying to get away.

My step-bro did that once when trying to remove a bat from the house when he went to grab it and it moved.
