Don't cancel your account if you want to keep your character

Postby brudus_maximus » Thu Sep 15, 2005 2:10 pm

I just recently was let go of my job :( so I went to my account page to see when my yearly subscription renews and I found out. If you cancel your account planning to come back later on don't count on your characters being there. I found out that Funcom keeps your characters for only 3 months after the billing cycle ends.

If you havn't seen Jolos at the Reets Retreat is because my friends got me into the best drug known to man, Word of Warcrack. But now that I'm a jobless bum I might be making a comeback.

I've been checking AO everyday to see if they have rolled out the new graphics (16.x patch), but nothing yet :(

Sorry about losing your job. I hope you find something soon. I have heard that sometimes character names stay in the database for much longer than the 3 months they claim, but it's probably better to be safe than sorry if you do want to retain your name.

On another note, according to the most recent official update on the AO forums, it looks like the patch is 1 to 2 weeks away.

I wouldn't rely on them to stay in the system more than 3 months though.

Especially now that the froob accounts are staying until 2007. I expect that for server issues, they will do clean up more often for inactive accounts.

They have so far, in 3 years of me playing they have cleaned out names only twice. and both times it was characters on inactive accounts. One time it was characters under level 5, and other time it was inactive level 1 characters. Ive got an inactive account, thats been cancelled for over 2 years now, but the character is still around. So do not worry about your character if you cancel the account.

Who knows if they will alter their actions from what they have done so far, but I got a guy in my guild who previously had left AO for over a year, came back and all chars were still there. Aslo I'm pretty sure I heard from some folks after they did their supposed deletions of chars under level 5 that were inactive that their chars still survived. Possibly they mean chars of accounts that are inactive when they do wipes like that. Personally I'm an inclusive person. My view is basically - delete something and it's gone, then what do you do if you want it back. Hard drives are cheaper than gas nowadays. I saw a 300GB one for under 100 after rebates now. Storage should not really be much of an issue anymore unless you are talking on a gigantic scale.

Yea, when they did the deletion of characters under level 5, it was from inactive accounts. Frozen accounts, not just cancelled, because as we all know I can cancel my account today, and still continue to play for as long as Im paid up for
