Stars, Modano Sign 5-yr Deal

August 3, 2005

DALLAS STARS RE-SIGN CENTER MIKE MODANO
FRISCO, Tex. - Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong announced tonight that the club has re-signed center Mike Modano to a five-year contract. Per club policy, no financial terms were disclosed.

"After a whirlwind day, it brings me great pleasure to announce that we were able to work out a contract to keep Mike Modano in Dallas for the next five years," said Armstrong. "He's a great player and has been a wonderful ambassador for hockey in Dallas. This new contract practically ensures that Mike will retire a Dallas Star, and we are thrilled that he will be back with us."

Modano, 35, is the Stars' all-time leader in goals (458), assists (648), points (1,106), games played (1,101), game-winning goals (71), and shorthanded goals (27). In addition, he is the franchise's leader in playoff goals (51), assists (76), points (127), and games played (144) and is one of three remaining players from Dallas' 1999 Stanley Cup championship team.

Among all American-born players in NHL history, Modano ranks third in points and fourth in goals, and is one of two U.S.-born players in league history to boast 400-plus goals and 600-plus assists. Modano became the 64th player (and fifth American) in NHL history to score 1,000 career points with an assist on Nov. 15, 2002, and only the 31st player to score 1,000 career NHL points with one club. He appeared in his 1,000th NHL game on Feb. 11, 2003, becoming the 32nd player in NHL history to play his first 1,000 games with one team and just the second American to accomplish that feat.

During the 2003-04 NHL season, Modano recorded 14 goals and 30 assists for 44 points with 46 penalty minutes in 76 games played. In 2002-03, Modano posted the third-highest scoring season of his career with 28 goals and 57 assists for 85 points. His 57 assists that season were the second-highest in his career.

Over the course of 15 NHL seasons, the 6-3, 205-lb. center has posted eight 80-plus point seasons, eleven 70-point seasons and twelve 60-point seasons, each of which top the all-time Stars record books. He also boasts three 50-assist campaigns, eleven 40-assist seasons, thirteen 20-goal years and nine 30-goal seasons, all franchise highs. He has been named to the NHL All-Star Game eight times, including twice as a starter, and has been a finalist for the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship (2002-03), the Selke Trophy as the league's top defensive forward (2000-01) and the Calder Trophy as top rookie (1989-90).

A native of Livonia, Mich., Modano has also been a member of two United States Olympic teams (2002, 1998), and his most recent action came at the 2004 World Cup, where he tied for the tournament lead in assists (6) and was tied for third in points (6) as he led the U.S. into the semifinals.

Modano was the number one overall draft selection by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1988 Entry Draft, and is the only remaining player on the roster to have made the move with the club to Dallas in 1993.

I still think Modano looks like a rabbit. I wonder how fat he got bar hopping the metroplex during the holdout. :P

/me breaks out his Naslund jersey.

This is good. Your team now has the potential to not suck.

I wish I could say the same for mine.

Veldron, I wouldn't complain, your team isn't called the New York Rangers. For us, it is as if hockey still doesn't exist.

I'm such a fair weather hockey fan. I'm near Pittsburgh, and there hasn't been much to get excited about for the past few years; really since Lemuix's return. Apparently this Sidney Crosby guy that we just drafted is supposed to be the next big thing, so perhaps I'll attempt to catch a few games this season.

Off Topic: Actually, I'm posting in this thread because another one that I was reading a moment ago MADE ME WANT TO SMASH MY MONITOR.

I'm sure, just about anyone reading boards right now can empathize.

For the record, to the GSP staff: You guys are doing an amazing job, the entire community appreciates what you do, keep up the good work!

...and try to ignore the occasional asshat.

So yeah, hockey... ahh, GO PENS! :)

<-- not a hockey fan, but I read something about that crosby guy the penguins got. Apparently the NHL has been drooling over this kids since he was like 15 or so. He was "a lock" for #1 draft choice since they discovered him. hehe I guess time will tell if he can perform with the big boys

Wow, Veldron, the Blues lost Pronger? Geez, tough blow. But you got... uhm... Downey?

Apparently the Blues GM thinks that he will "inject enthusiasm into the lineup"... I guess having someone sit in the penalty box for most games does kinda do that?

Sorry to hear that the Blues are on the block this year, apparently the impending sale of the team is what prevented them from being able to sign Pronger, since he wanted a long term deal, and they didn't want to offer more than a year or two.

I'm actually not losing too much sleep over the Pronger issue. I think he's a bit overrated by a lot of folks. He has killed the team with dumb penalties countless times in key playoff games, and has never been very successful at shutting down an opposing star player in a series the way an "elite" defenseman is supposed to.

All things considered, I think we made a pretty good deal with Edmonton to get some value out of him. But, yes...the Blues are in a lame duck position becaue of our owner wanting to sell. I expect a "competitive" team this year, but little else.

As for Downey, I'm actually liking that move. Between Downey, Low, Walker, Salvador, Mayers, Jackman, Drake and Tkachuk...this is going to be a very physical hockey team. If we're not going to contend for the Cup, we can at least enjoy beating the piss out of other teams. :)

We lost Forsberg, lot of crying in Denver (damn cap ;). But I personally don't know, he has been injured a fair bit in recent years. I think they made the right choice keeping Blake and Sakic, especially with Hejduk playing as well as he has.
