The little things that make us happy

Postby Vallikat » Tue Jun 07, 2005 3:24 pm

I saw my doc today. He told me that I lost 5 pounds since last year. Ok, so its only 5 pounds. So I know that weight can fluctuate during the course of the day or in women, during the course of our cycle. It's only 5 pounds. But it made me happy to hear it. :)

So it got me thinking, as kind of a side from the "oh yay" thread, what are some of the little things that make you happy?

A good pair of pants.

You may think I'm kidding, but sizing for me is a pain in the butt, so when I find a pair of pants that fits me just right, it's cause for celebration in my mind.

I love polishing a piece of newly finished stained glass. It's a hard process, and when the weeks of hard work pay off and there're no broken pieces and I get to finally hang a finished piece in the window for the first time and see the light coming through it...that makes me happy.

What makes me happy... hmm...
Working on a guitar piece with no music, only the piece in my head, and being able to actually work out most of it. After all the going over little scales and notes and how they're played, after going over what it sounds like, and with the knowledge I can hardly read music, when it's done and I can play it, I feel fantastic.
Especially, when it comes to working out anything by Joe Satriani!

Walking barefoot, sounds a bit "hippy", but there's just something special about walknig barefoot :D

Looking at my watch at work and realise that it's 4 hours since the last time I looked at it when I only thought it was 1

Coming home from work, and just do a random "/tell gridbot playing" and realise that there's a GSP show going on :D

* Warm rain.

* A good book with lots of skin-prickling "WTF!" moments in it.

* The first day in spring where there is still traces of snow on the curb, but it finally warmed up enough that everyone's got their driver's side window rolled down.

* Warm rain.

* The moment where you stop and realize you're looking at scenery you've never seen before, and might never see again, and you have to just stand there and stare, and hope your mind can develope the picture later.

* The epiphany that occurs when you realize an existential truth that never occured to you before.

Ohhh nice stuff!

Some of mine:

The smell of the earth after the first Spring rain.

The tiniest of baby seashells. I once found a conch shell about the size of a pebble.

Doing something that you were always afraid to try and finding out it wasn't so hard or scary afterall.

Getting a smile or a wink or a wave from across the room and realizing that the guy who just did it is easily 10 years your junior. (I should note that I'm 37, so that's ok and like legal and stuff :) )

Sitting out on the porch and watching a thunderstorm as it approaches and eventually arrives over head.

New music by Lan Tarryk Kozar.

*A good chair, a blanket, a storm blowing outside, a good book, a fireplace, something good to drink.

* Sitting alone at the outer point of a pier, watching the sunset with clouds coming in and thinking about whatever pops into my head.

* Meeting an friend I haven't seen for a long time, and giving that friend a big hug.

* The smell of the deep forest

The feeling I get at 4:59 when I can start packing up my stuff to leave work!

The book "Good Omens" by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. I read this book during the worst times in my life because it's one of the few things that I know will *always* make me feel better.

The feeling of relief right after the countdown from the previous DJ when I'm live, and the stream is clear and it's ALL MINE!

Netflix movies in the mailbox.

The UPS guy makes me happy quite often. He delivers CDs and stained glass supplies. :)

The thing that makes me the happiest........... is just spending time alone with that special someone. Just sitting there, holding each other watching the sunset or rise. nothing quite like that imo.

Enjoying coffee in the early morning on the deck of my parent's beach house and wondering for just a moment what the poor people are doing (forgetting for just a moment that I am one of the poor people). :)

Valli, if that is poor, then I'd rather be the poorest person in the world. *smiles* For me:

*rain
*the smile on the face of my loved ones
*Waking up early and stepping outside to get a nice brisk fresh breath
*simply sitting with my sketch pad and drawing
*studying flowers

*smiles* I enjoy the simple life. For me, that's the richest kind of life. One you can enjoy.

*anime
*Kiwi Lemonade

*nods*

Was afraid that might be misunderstood. Just trust me that my family is not rich or even well off by any means. Further, being able to enjoy that place on occasion is a small pleasure, one that I appreciate completely because I can remember barely making it on cans of tuna and powdered milk. It was a long hard fault battle for my folks to have that place at the beach. But as 1 of 5 kids, it in no way makes us rich, not financially anyway.

The point is, that down there I'm not an unemployed, uninsured, single mom forced to live with her parents because she's broke. Down there, in the morning, with my coffee, I'm at peace, without a worry in the world. It's a rare moment that I get to feel that way, so it makes me happy when I do.

The way that no matter how crappy my mood is, and no matter how much of an asshole I'm acting... my dog still looks at me like I can do no wrong.
