Yet another reason for me to not "play" this game

Postby Vallikat » Sat Jun 04, 2005 5:25 am

I recently did something I've not really done before. I started an alt in Jobe. I actually did try it a couple times before but the lag was so bad I could barely manuever so I gave up on it. I don't actually play too much anyway so it was no big deal.

But recently I decided to give it a go. Didn't like my first character so I rerolled her today. Went through the Drake quests pretty quick, then figured I'd find Yorick and become Clan. Only as I'm sure many of you know, Yorick is broken. I find this out after going through the whole thing with him only to find out he's broken. I check the forums and OMG, I shouldn't have been shocked by what I found out, but I was! From what I understand he's been broken since SL's came out! Yet, newcomers are still given the hologram and still misdirected, and the broken NPC is still standing there leading you to believe that he works, all the way up until the point that he doesn't.

Now this is not a real big deal. Tomorrow when I come back I'll buy the clan app and starter maps in Borry. But FFS I would've done that in the first place had I not been directed to see Yorick when I first arrived on Jobe.

arrrrggggghhhhh!!!

Ok, that's just my little rant from someone who seldom ventures outside of Reets, which is probably for the best. :)

yea, I know Yorick sucks. There is a trick to getting him to work right though. When you first talk to him, you are still neutral, and he asks you what side you support, you MUST say you "wish to stay neutral" he will then give you the apps for clan and omni. Use whichever one you wish, then speak to Yorick again.

You'll have to get another hologram thing from him by telling him you dont have one. Then this time when he asks you what side you want to support, you tell him whatever side you switched to, be it clan or omni. At this point you'll get the maps for that side.

afaik he doesnt ever give out neutral starter maps.

yeah, that's what I had to do, it's bugged because you don't have the apps in your inventory.

Actually what happened was that I was told that he would only accept the log, only I didn't have the log. So I thought maybe it had something to do with my Bracer. Handed him that and again he wouldn't take it. Bracer went back into my inventory only it was actually gone. It stopped working and wouldn't go back to my wrist. I tried zoning and realized that both bracer and hologram were now gone. When I petetioned it, I got them back, but I asked if she could give me some hint as to how to make him work or if he was just broken. She told me she couldn't tell me what to do, but would suggest I read the forums. That's how I found out he was broken.

Incidentally, on the first girl I made there last week I never even viewed the hologram. Forgot I had it. When I was ready I just ran straight to Borry and bought the app and maps. Then I thought about this and figured that I knew to do that, but I must've missed something somewhere because a n00b wouldn't just "know" to do that. That's basically why I killed her. I wanted to go back and do it again "properly". Silly me. :)

On a related note, the armor situation sucks! Again I wanted to do this the way any n00b would do it. I wanted to give myself a fresh perspective by rediscovering this game. I couldn't believe they would put level restrictions on n00b armor. I barely even bothered with it. Bought like a gloves and headband or something and said screw the rest of it. I mean at least if you start on n00b island you get a shot at getting something halfway decent.

All in all, I'm not sure I'll ever start another character in Jobe.

However, last week, on my first Jobe girl, I killed my first Heckler and lots more after that. I have to admit that while I didn't like the repitition of it, the money was sure good. :)

I really liked the whole Jobe BY thing. Instead of pointless leveling and random loot gathering we got when originally starting you had all these quests to undertake. You went out killing mobs with a purpose & to try and find the little items to make improved weapons. The Jobe BY vs the old BY is a thousand times better. OK far as lag goes maybe, though I lowered my graphics setting awhile back which helps, especially when aliums come into play. If you complain of lag in Jobe BY, I challenge you to attend an alien raid in an AI city - whereupon your computer will lag so badly you'll probably die, LD & have your pets cringing at your screams of anguish.

And what's all this crazy talk of turning Clan anyway. Everybody who's anybody is Neut!

I liked the idea of doing the quests. It made some sense to me. Weapons don't matter to me. Personally I hate them which is why I keep making MA's (one day I'll stick with another proffession over level 5, I swear, I will, one day when MA's suck so bad at low levels that I can't stand them any longer...so, like never). But the quest part is good. Go do this, get rewarded and along the way you you can make some good cash and XP as a bonus. Nifty.

As to alian raids...well let me just point out that I play this game on a Dell xps 450, PII. I already have my settings set very low and generally run into considerable lag issues. The only way I can enter the Shadowlands at all *braces for the assault of the techies* is by killing my firewall. Bearing that in mind, I really have no intentions of participating in an alien raid. Another reason I like the MA is because I can solo her. Ages ago I went on a couple raids with the Roses to the Steps of Madness and it killed me, - almost - if not for the good healing of Jynne and Meik. Even team missions are nearly impossible for me unless I have an extrodinarily patient team.
