Movie Surprises? Diamonds in the Rough?

Postby FoxyJama » Thu Apr 28, 2005 10:34 pm

Have you ever gone to see a movie, or rented a movie, not thinking that you were going to like it, and you really did? Likewise, were there movies that you had high expectations for and were surprisingly disappointed in? Please share!

My surprise:

Equilibrium - I don't even know when this movie came out in the US. Maybe I wasn't around, but I'm surprised I missed it. My husband rented it and it sat on the DVD player for a week or two before I finally put it in and watched it, and WOW. Social commentary and Gun-Fu! Christian Bale should do a wonderful job in the new Batman flick if he's capable of the acting done in this movie. I recommend it highly!

Yeah, Equilibrium is awsome.
Think it was Xtrophic that mentioned it to me long ago. Awsome!
I think I like Equilibrium better than Matrix,
maybe because it's more dramatic, emotional,
and socially more creepy.
I'm not entirely sure but it could be based on a old novel or movie (think black and white scifi/thriller/twilightzone'ish)
And yeah, Bale rocked in this movie.
I also loved the fact that the amount of slowmotion was very low too.
Equilibrium has indeed landmarked the Pistol Martial Arts. *laughs*

PS! Search the forum, the movie has been mentioned previously (a year+ maybe).

Damnit, X! Now I seriously want one of the Cleric-coats!!!!

And yeah, Equilibrium is one hell of a movie. It really opened my eyes for Christian Bale as an actor.

Hmm I caught the end of that movie on the cable box recently and honestly thought "what a cheap Matrix ripoff" but then I just saw the end too.

Kinda on topic, but a little skewed - 6th Sense was a great movie so I was a M Night Shamalan fan. I'm not a big one for finding much info about a movie I know I wanna see because A) I already want to see it so need no more convincing and B) I wanna see it and enjoy it without knowing the whole plot beforehand

That said I went to see Unbreakable when it came out. Get to the theatre, buy a ticket & some popcorn, go in and sit down(little late so I missed the trailers) and the movie starts... Up pops a line of text about how many people read comic books in the US ::WTF thinks me!?! Did I go into the wrong theater?:: But I sit still and let the movie start and eventually understand. Mr. Shamalan made a movie for me and all these other jokers got duped into being here! Nice.

FYI I've been a fair comic reader for most of my life since about high-school

gun-fu??

Postby WarlordAlpha » Tue May 03, 2005 12:28 am

i believe its being called Gun Kata.... its an asian thing.. lol.. seen it in many asian movies, was cool to see it used in an american movie.

and Equilibrium plays on George Orwells - 1984 novel.
no action really, but if you liked equilibrium check it out.

and they also used elements from Ray Bradbury - Fahrenheit 451
sooo.. if you care for some classic literature check them out.

and yes i need to buy equilibrium on dvd :-)

and heres a movie i thought would suck bad.... A Knight's Tale
my little sister talked me into seeing it with her at the theaters awhile ago. because im the only other one in my family that likes dark ages/fantasy/sci fi stuff... i expected it to be junk, but i was impressed i had fun, and i bought the dvd! lol

ATTENTION TARRYK! AND OTHER FIREFLY FANS! (due to the firefly thread)
the actor that plays Wash is in Knight's Tale as Wart, great comedy charater as well.

The character's name is "Wot", and yes, Kayten Lynx and I all knew it instantly the second we saw him on the screen. All three of us started making jokes about "Pain...lots of pain!!"

A Knight's Tale is one I'll never ever forget. My hubby and I hooked up for the first time in Las Vegas and we watched it several times in the hotel room during our 5 day reclusive hideout from the world. It was the only decent movie on pay per view. :)
