Well, Miv, that's easy. Humans are a highly competitive and opportunistic species with huge levels of aggression when you put a lot of us in one place without exercising a lot of controls when we're children. For most of us, being TOLD what's right and what's wrong without a longstanding, consistant system of both positive and negative enforcement during our first 18-23 years just isn't enough to make us fit to play with others.
For some of us even that isn't enough once we leave mommy and daddy. SOME of us require the continued system religion supplies, complete with omnipotent father figure ready to reward our good deeds and punish our bad for all eternity in the afterlife to keep us in line.
It's kinda hard since even those of us who were instilled with decent morals and ethics are confronted daily with evidence that those who throw them out the window profit more than those of us who keep to them. Liars, cheaters and theives DO prosper and that's a powerful lesson to everyone around them.
Those of us who lack relious faith don't even have the vindictive satisfaction of thinking we'll reap our everlasting reward while those who surpass us by less moral, more destructive behaviors will suffer eternally in payment for how they got over in their lives. And the reality is that most people, even and maybe especially a lot of the ones who claim to be religious and attend their churches and synagogues regularly don't REALLY believe anymore.
It's just in our nature. And no matter how long we are "civilized", it's bloody hard to tame a homo sapiens and keep one that way. Kinda like Seigfried and Roy's tigers. One slip in caution and you could lose your face.
