Need a list of anime

Postby Kaetty » Sat Aug 10, 2002 8:09 pm

Judging from the sets of avatars being offered on this site, I figure that there is at least one anime fan here.

I want to buy some more anime but I have to order them online because well I can't easily get to places that sell them. Which makes it difficult because the description of the plots at online sites is either non-existant or not very helpful.

So can people suggest some good anime? The kind of anime that I like are ones similar to Record of Lodos War, Demon City Shinjuku, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll etc.

Thanks! :)

Sorry to disappoint you some, but that is the standard Avatar pack available at the PHPBB site. Nothing more to it I am afraid.

I am not saying I do not dislike anime, just saying there is no though behind the avatars offered.

I haven't watched to many Anime movies, but Ghost in a shell is a good one :)

I am a massive old-skool otaku, but I've been out of the loop for some years. Favorite series' include Ranma 1/2, Tenchi Muyo (actually, the series sucks, I like the feature movies), Lodoss Wars, and Bubblegum Crisis (original).

Battle Angel - only one movie :( but tons of manga avail
Armitage III
Neon Genesis Evangelion - 13 tape series
The new Bubblegum Crisis 2047(?) is pretty good too.

My big box o' anime has been sitting at my buddy's house too long, forgot half the 100+ tapes I have.

Recently bought Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust, enjoyed that a lot as well as Blood - The last Vampire.

Lodoss War has a prequel (or was it sequel) series, although the name escapes me at the moment...

Serial Experiments Lain is a new one gaining popularity, but it is a very abstract series & hard to follow for a lot of people (moreso than Akira).

Good start, and yes it is Bubblegum Crisis 2047

Other ones

Techni Muyo
Tenchi Muyo in Space
Tenchi Muyo in love (?)
Tenchi Muyo in Tokyo (personal favorite)
Akira
Cowboy BeeBop
Cutie Honey (mind you a bit X rated here, but just a really funny wierd Anime)
Ranma 1/2
Inu Yasha (I think that's how it is spelled... Manga is better)
X 1999 (Manga is better)

That's all I can think of right now.

ok, stuff that blew me AWAY, and im picky

Akira. DUH! shoot me.

cowboy bebop (and cowboy bebop movie=holy effing cow!!)
its really awesome to see perfectly animated redneck fights animated by japanese perfectionists, you cant beat it.

vampire hunter d bloodlust, i wet myself and then watched it again

Hellsing.... that series could have gone SOOO much longer, but god it was cool, kinda like a larry niven novel in that respect

YES, you MUST see evangelion, and the movies, you MUST, it made me cry, and i am a manly man, pheer me

blood the last vampire, prime example of what you get when you cross anime with "frame jogging" the action looks so real its like the animation is literally FILMED with a hand held camera, it was done a lot in the animatrix and cowboy bebop.

Tokeo Godfathers was another heartbreaker, director of akira, which you have to watch as well.

Perfect Blue, same guy.

Millenium actress, same guy.

oldie but a goodie--- demon city shinjuku

Blasphemy! No one mentioned Ruin Explorers!

Other brilliant and fun Anime...

Those Who Hunt Elves - humorous, tongue-in-cheek fantasy based anime
Premise: A spell gone wrong has spread magic glyphs far and wide onto the bodies of young elves. Our intrepid adventurers must track them down and reclaim them. Much hilarity ensues.
Dirty Pair (NOT Flash) - sci-fi anime
Premise: the 3WA keeps the interplanetary peace, but one particular pair of officers leaves mayhem and destruction in their wake due to circumstances beyond their control...
Gunbuster - Giant Robot Anime
Premise: Earth is under attack by an overwhelming and utterly evil force. Only the operator of the Gunbuster can preserve mankind from extinction.

I've watched those Boo, except for Ruin Explorers. Like I said, my list is quite old now ;)

I didn't like the animation quality of Dirty Pair though. Story wasn't all that great in my opinion. Could have been the quality of the copies I got though, they were VHS and had been watched quite a bit.

Another anime that I used to love.... VOLTRON!!! DEFENDER OF THE UNIVERSE!!!!

On the mention of Lodoss War..

There are three variations of this. Record of Lodoss War the OAV. Best. :)

Record of Lodoss war: Chronicle of the Heroic knight - Rapes the storyline of the previous, throwing in much more absurd and cliched anime qualities. OAV was like 2nd Edition D&D, from what I've heard COTHK is like any commonplace anime.

Legend of Crystania - The Motion Picture - Stay the hell away. Set in Lodoss War's setting, just...stay away.

The last two I haven't seen. It is just by word of mouth.

Berserk, Record of lodoss war, Princess Mononoke (Such an excellent movie), Lupin the third, Angel Sanctuary (Better to get mangas than OAV)...

Jin-Roh had a very rich plot and setting, but didn't have a lot of action despite such cool designs.
