Refresh this link (pic changes every 5 mins) - http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/volcanocams/m ... anocam.jpg

She was supposed to go up today, but I'm not so sure it's gonna happen. Still about a 50/50 that she'll blow within the next 24 hours.

Oddy, I think that's because you refreshed too quick. I checked back on it a few times last night and it changed. As of right now though at 6:41 am eastern time, the cam is snow. I think that's a bad sign.

wait...it just hit me (sorry, pre-coffee) if its 6:41 here, its 3:41 there, so it might be that its just too dark to see anything.

Yep, she's still blowing lots of steam, no final eruption (yet)...but they're expecting the top to blow soon.

Hard to tell, but it's most likely just captured sunlight reflected out.

Does look mighty eerie tho. :)

Oh yeah,. I suppose I should say something, since that volcano and I are like, neighbors and junk. :-P I'm less than 50 miles from it... I think.

The last time Mt St Helens blew, it shot ash and rubble across the state boarders. The local area was also snow-like ash, and it coated everything. That happened before I was born (pre-1981), but this is what I've been told whenever the topic of local volcanos ever came up.

There were concerns of an imminant eruption. Tremors at the base of St. Helens were becoming more frequent than normal (it's subject to minor semi-frequent tremors in her "normal" state). But now, the pros say that "a big one" may not be the case. What I gather is that no one is quite sure what's going to happen, but they strongly belive that if anything, we may see some pressure steaming (and ash sprewing) for a few months yet.

A massive eruption as before is still just a theory and a possability.
And nuts to me; I just lost my good umbrella.

While in this day and age we know tons more about the activity of Volcanoes they are still fairly unpredictable. When St Helens went off the last time possibly it was science not having a good enough read on her yet, but I seem to remember it being a major shock like it went off with little warning. I still remember the pictures of all the trees flattened on the mountainsides and the car of some very unlucky folks who happened to be there at the time.

50 miles away might seem rather safe, but personally Fir, I'd be listening and ready to flee at a moments notice. We can always think the worst won't happen, but if it would, worst case scenario with a volcano involved would be quite bad.

50 miles is more than safe distance, though. The last blast in 1980 was "the big one" and only immediately effected the surrounding 15 mile radius. If it blows again, it won't be nearly as big as that last one (since there's not nearly as much blockage to keep the pressure up).

Did it blow?

Postby Vallikat » Fri Oct 08, 2004 10:58 pm

As of 5:55 pm eastern, the image was all grey with darker grey splotches. Does that mean the cam is broken or did it blow? Nothing on the news about it. Anyone know anything?

Nope. Last report from wednesday said it was tapering off and that scientists are pretty sure there is not an imminent eruption. That big steam blast on Tuesday was the biggest show, it's been settling down since.

No telling for sure, but chances of eruption in the near future are way down.

The grey you see is a heavy fog, probably off-set by steam or ash release from the volcano. Fairy common at that altitude.
