OMG... MX1000...

Postby Timbrewulf » Fri Aug 27, 2004 7:38 am

Yes, for those of you who've listened to me rant from time to time.. You know I'm a Logitech whore... Hell, some of you have even accused me of being 'on the take'... Honestly, I wouldn't mind it.. Would've meant I didn't have to spend $170 on my DiNovo... :p

Unfortunately, the sad truth is, I'm simply very fond of their products (As evinced by my aforementioned DiNovo and MX900, QuickCam Pro 4000, Z-680 speakers, Freedom 2.4 wireless joystick and Cordless Rumblepad 2.. :p)

...and now.. Finally.. THey've released the successor to their MX700/900...

Behold.. The MX1000:

Unfortunately, not much info's available yet.. However, if it's anything like their previous 'next gen' tech... This is going to be a serious jump from the MX700/900.

Looks like I'm getting a new mouse! I hope they have different colors... not liking that scheme too much.

I'm of the same mind.. Kind of hoping for the nifty holographic colour scheme of the MX510.

...and if not... There's always... Modding...

I just noticed a slight problem... Where is the battery cover? My Mx700 batteries went bad after a few months, so I had to replace them. This won't be a good thing if I have to damage the mouse to replace the batteries...

It would be cool to mod the mouse, I might add different shades of blue for the power LEDs rather than what appears to be green/yellow/red. Maybe some vents, and a cooling fan with power switch for the fan and maybe adjustable fan speed controls. Oh, and it'd be the silver/black combo as my case and monitor is.

* MX Laser Engine provides 20 x times the tracking power of optical
* a built-in lithium-ion battery & rapid-charging base station
* Fast RF cordless delivers cordless performance that equals USB corded connection
* New thumb-button controls include universal page forward and back buttons and application switch to quickly move between open windows
* Illuminated 4-level batt indicator precisely monitors batt strength
* Wheel tilts for side-to-side scrolling, zoom with a click of the
wheel
* Cruise Control rocker for speed scrolling up and down

This does bother me a tad... I never remember to dock my mouse and to this end, I have a recharging station with 4 AA's on my desk... However, call it blind devotion... But with the MX series being the highest-ranked and greatest-selling series of mice.. Ever... I don't see Logitech fouling that up by releasing a half-assed product.

One of the bad things about lithium ion batteries is that even though they last longer with the recharge/drain cycle and battery usage time, it still gets to a point where it craps out.

I have laptop batteries that give up after two years. We end up replacing them.

If I recall, it's mostly from not allowing the battery to drain all the way that causes the damage. The indicator light is going to be very useful, makes it easier to know when you're almost dead so you can let it drain to get a full charge.

Then again, after 2 years they'll have a newer model so it won't be a big deal.

Oh, and I have no doubt that it's going to be an excellent product. When it comes to pointing devices, I accept no other product whether at work or anywhere else. It's also one of the only products I recommend to customers.

I bought my mx700 when it first came out. I bought it and saw the light, and the light is red, or green when recharging.

I'm also curious as to how long it'll be before the MX1000 Duo comes out....

Kickassssss.

And add to that batt level led.
And on/off switch. (wohoo no draining if away for the weekend).

I kinda agree with ya on the mouse thing Wulf. then again. these are "USB" mice.
and it's so easy to unplug the MX700 (and asuming the MX1000 is similar) use a backup mouse (today it's my Cordless Mouseman Optical)
my old mouse need a resyncing with it's RF base etc.
When the MX700 is done charging it's mice swapping time again.
The MX700 don't need any syncing when plugged back in and only need a lil twist with the wrist (i.e mouse the darn thing a milimeter lol) for the pointer to come back :)

(I so hope the MX1000 behaves the same, i.e it's base station not relying on the USB cable to be able to charge the mouse, cause USB itself is so perfect esp with mice to hotswap :)

*remembers the old days with PS2 mice and the PC having to be like rebooted and crap for the mouse change to work lol*

Oh and Wulf, try to remember to put it on the base station like every other night when ya go for bed.

So far the MX700 when it starts to blink I put it on the charger (after a few mins of blinking, I know it got a large "reserve" tank hehe)
If I do a lot of work on the PC, it blinks every 2nd day. if I don't use the PC that much it's um like from every 2nd day to like a week until it blinks.

So I think I need the MX1000 for two reasons. way improved battery indicator (full, not so full, half full, getting low, WAKE UP, oop's no light I'ts dead) lol.
And TILT WHEEL WOHOOO. I hope that function is natively supported just like the thumb forward/backward buttons. (Logitech rock on their hardware but the drivers leave a lot to be desired :P

To me the MX1000 looks more like a result of a wishlist based on the MX700 feedback :)
(i.e the tiny >> and << and window buttons that I never bothered to use (nor install the logitech drivers to actaly use'em either lol.)
Moving that one extra button to the thumb is a great idea and will be less in the way there.
Good thing the forward/backward thumb buttons are there, they rock for surfing etc and games :)
scroll wheel is a must and logitechs is very comfy, but now finaly that tilt wheel that I wished the MX700 had. (the only good thing Microsoft ever invented lol)

It looks just as sturdy as the MX700, and got pretty much the same powergrip as well. Not sure, but the grip might even be improved. (not sure how, for my hand the MX700 has close to a perfect grip/fit.

Btw Wulf, you do know the resolution to your issue? get TWO MX1000 :P
While one is in the base you use the other, if the one you use run out
then turn it off (off switch) put it in charge station.
Now the other newly charged mouse you just turn it on, push that lil reset button on the bottom of the mouse. and away you go :)
A funny side effect would be near doubled battery lifetime,
and a doubling of mice lifetime as well. :)

For me the issue is. is a upgrade worth it just for the tilt wheel?
Afraid not. not right now. my MX700 is still the most uber in the street lol.
(but soon MX1000 takes that No1 place).
I may wait for like MX1100 or sumpt. and if no such mouse then by that time I do upgrade the MX1000 will be pretty cheap compared to launch pricing.

The MX1000 has one thing that I so wished the MX700 had. Tilt wheel.
Man that is so uber...

*tries to tilt the wheel on his MX700, but fails, breaks down and cries*

It's not JUST a mouse, it's a multi-dimensional interactive pointing device, with lots and lots of buttons. So many buttons, you might forget what one does.

And it has an LED on it. C'mon, does YOUR MOUSE HAVE A STATUS LED??

I bet the MX1100 will have a status LED for it's status LED. Could you imagine how brilliant that will be? I better patent the thought process.

Heh, and you guys are all drooling over how it looks. Call me old school, but the mouse is designed to be under my hand, I'm not staring at it on a wall somewhere. It's under my hand being functional. It could practically look like crap for all I care. It's under my hand and I'm looking not at it and my hand, but at the screen.

/mouse rant off

I just miss my mice with balls. These mice just don't have what it takes for what goes on in some games and chat rooms.
