Katsucon X!

Postby Darth Bootay » Mon Feb 16, 2004 5:02 am

Yay! I survived the weekend.

Thursday: Oral surgery. Euw. Owies. They pumped me full of drugs and I spent the rest of the day in a witless stupor, alternately trying to clean the computer room closet and dozing.

Friday: Great Mouth Pain and the realization that the IV I had the day before left a HUGE nasty bruise on my right arm. Frantic packing for the convention on percocet. Got to the convention less than one hour before I was due for my security shift. Made the amazingly stupid decision to accept a post in front of the dealer's room. Spent from 2 till 6pm high as a kite telling people, "No, you CAN'T take that big ass bag in there and NO you can't leave it sitting here unattended... did you sleep thru 9-11 and the homeland security act you moron??" Ate something unrecognizable so I wouldn't pass out. Honestly can't remember what I was guarding from 7-8pm. Passed out before 9pm.

Saturday: Convention plague breaks out. This year it's two nasty strains of stomach flu. I didn't get it. Go me! Put on the Boogiepop Phantom outfit and hid in it for the entire day. Still high as a kite on percocet. Checking badges and bags while letting people get photos of me is an interesting challenge. Almost as hard as finding an elevator that isn't so full that getting on is intimate contact with at least five other random people in DIRE need of a toothbrush. Can't go more than five feet without hearing someone shriek "BOOGIEPOP! Boogiepop stop please! Photo kudasai??" Manage to find and buy a stuffed Ein toy (cute dog from Cowboy Beebop) for Cambion for Valentine's Day since we haven't had ANY awake time together. Get treated like absolute trash by some lowly Chili's restaurant manager when I complain that our food never arrived (while trying to get some dinner with my diabetic friend and his wife). *cry* Cleverly dodge being drafted for another security shift that night. Get revenge on all the photo people by doing unto others.

Sunday: Erk. So. Tired. Mouth hurts. NOT on percocet because I'm sick of being so high I can't remember more than "Badge please?" Suspicious baggie of white powder is found in the lobby men's room. Hotel staff calls ALL local authorities AND a hazmat team and we get to evacuate the entire floor... for a freaking bag of baking flour. Manage to escape guard duty for the last four hours of con and watch the convention medical staff get swamped with victims of the convention plague. Smoke most of a pack of cigarettes while reminiscing with a couple of other veteran security staffers about past convention disasters.

I'll put up the pix as soon as I can get them off Cam's horrible newstyle digital camera. =)

I should have gone this year (seeing as I live only 10 miles away in the same county), but alas, I forgot all about it until the night before. *sigh* Just like Otakon last year.

Do you know if the baggie made the local news, it would be strange if it didn't. I don't recall hearing it, but then again, I didn't watch the news this weekend.

Hope you're feeling better

Rivie: On drugs. And sheer stubborness.

Maenos: Shame on you dude. You missed some of the hottest otaku-chicks on the east coast. Yes, the dealer's room had LOTS of different plushtoys. All the usual suspects from P-Chan (Ranma 1/2) to the Catbus (Totoro) and a lot of nifty little toys I was clueless about, not being as deep into Japanese pop-culture as some are. Including this totally weird little peanut my friend Mel bought and chased me around with.

Next year I plan to be Not-A-Staffer so I get more of a chance to actually do in-depth shopping and get to see the Anime Music Video Awards (which never fails to be scheduled on the shift I work). If I can find the right materials at a reasonable price far enough in advance, I'll be going as Soul Caliber 2's Ivy (outfit 3) alongside Cambion's Soul Caliber 2 Cervantes (outfit 2). Cross your fingers.

I heard, from a friend, there were many cosplaying elves. :(

Female ones...Hot ones.

Is this true Saintbootay?

Oh well, at least it gives me time to decide what to cosplay. :P

Orson of ROLW, or Solid *Snickers* Snake. :D (The latter of course would not include Snake's thong and would require some bodybuilding if I wish to wear the stealth-suit. ;))

There are ALWAYS lots of pretty, young, female elves. You can't go to an anime convention anywhere and NOT see hawt elves. Ever. Too bad the one REALLY perfect Deedlit was being taken to Medical with the con-plague the only time I saw her. I wanted her photo in the worst way. Hopefully she's feeling better.

Just goes to show that even elves have to wash their hands a zillion times a day when attending a convention with over 3k people in it.

Dammit dammit dammiit!!! EVERY ANIME CONN? O_o

(eagerly awaits Otakon)

Thats good to know then, Saintbootay. Very interesting as well, and I'm happy to hear that. ^_^

Poor Ichi.

Cosplay advice.

1) Start early. One full year ahead of the convention date is not too soon if you want your costume to look amazing without making you both poor and crazy.
2) Get as many stills of the character you plan to cosplay as humanly possible. Study not just the clothing they wear but the whole character. Orson isn't Orson if you can't pull off the expression and posture that go with the outfit. Be honest with yourself. If the character is a waify, busty girl and you're a beefy male, you're just not going to pull it off. No one over the age of 20 or over 115 lbs should EVER try to cosplay Radical Edward from Cowboy Bebop. Ever.
3) Make a list of all costume parts you will need, then break the list down to materials needed to make each part. Being even semi-organized about it makes it SO much easier.
4) Troll fabric and crafting stores for good fabrics and patterns that can be easily adapted. Do NOT skimp on fabrics. Crappy fabric = Crappy outfit. If you keep your eyes open, you'll find a good deal on what you need. If you don't, you won't have enough money to throw away in the dealer's room and you will cry bitter tears over the sweet lewt you can't take home with you.
5) Fabricating non-fabric accessories requires a lot of practice. Learn the joys of shaping plastic with a hot blowdryer, a soldering gun and a glue gun in advance. The best cosplay armor is made out of cut and shaped plastic that's been spraypainted. Stiff, closed-cell foam is your friend. Learn to carve it. It makes good swords that will pass most convention security standards.
6) Before even planning weapon prop construction, find out the rules of the conventions you plan to attend. Different conventions have different rules and it just plain SUCKS to put a week or more work into a prop sword only to find out when you arrive that your prop violates the rules and will not be allowed in the convention. Flat out forget about using gun props. Both MD and VA states have laws forbidding anything that even vaguely resembles a gun in a public place.

Want. Pictures. =D

And I highly suggest going to your local anime convention if you have the time and fundage. It's fun. You meet the coolest people. You get a chance to legally view new stuff you've never seen before and find out you like it. You get to buy really neat stuff. Convention parties rule. And who can say no to pretty girls in tight spandex?

Just remember the minimum daily numbers: 7-3-2-1

7 hours sleep
3 litres water
2 meals consisting of more than chips and chocolate
1 bath and brush

Isn't the 7 hours of sleep supposed to be for the WHOLE weekend? Cause that's how it was for me. 3 hours here, 2 there, a little nap at breakfest, and scattered naps elsewhere. :P

LOTS of parties, LOTS of dancing, LOTS of fun.
And if I drank at all... there'd have been LOTS of drinking! :P
But I think I was quite under age then.
OH well. :P

There was lots of other things going on at these cons I went to that little ones wouldn't be allowed into. ;) hehehehhe

Me? Um, no. This was a LONG (5 to 6 years ago) while ago. I was maybe 16 or 17. Yeah, I got into places where my age shouldn't have been allowed. ;) But also, I didn't have a computer then, nor scanners (I barely have that now), or a camra.

I had to GROW and EARN my gimpware. :P

You got into places you werent allowed to be?... Erh... So?
I'm not American, and I have heard that it can be pretty uptight over by you guys. Morally n' shit... I'm hopin it's a bad rep and a load of BS cause come on! Who HASN'T done som'n they weren't s'posed too?

Back here, the limit is 18, but you have to go to 20+ places if you don't wanna be swamped by 16-year-olds... It's almost unbearable!

I don't know what tame behaviour you're thinking about. ;)
I just know that typically youth restricted things and activities were a little looser at the few cons I went to. And no, not sharing.

It'd be kinda neato to go back to one sometime.
Natch, as I said way back in the day, I'd have to be packing a Vash Duster.

(Think Megatokyo.com)
And they declared their secret marriage, that occured new years eve in vegas, AT the con! Double GEH!

Now I wish I went. Double wish! Good fun and fangirlism that I once had? MAN! ^_^;

I had the biggest crush on that dork Piro. ^_^; Fangirl crush I guess. And now his wife has gone and stolden him away from me! :x

... why does that sound so weird when I say it out loud? :P
