You take it out for a week?...
But... But...
Mine was out for 3 hours... Then it was sealed... :?
You mean you get it re-pierced every other week? That can't be the case.. That'd be like... expensive...

Tho I miss it... I really do...

removal of the tongue barbell... it depends how long you've had the piercing, as it does heal rather quickly. i've had mine since march of 1996, when i remove it for more than 3-4 days it begins to heal starting at the bottom of my tongue... here comes the hard part, if it starts to heal the best way to put it back in is to use those threads on the barbell to screw it back through your tongue. it's a bit painful, but it will go away, you just need to loosen that hole up enough to get it back through. another piercing to watch out for if you take your jewelery out is a labret, they seem to close up quickly too.

I have several tattoos, and my best friend is a tattoo artist...

The best possible adice I, or anyone, can give you about getting a tattoo is take your time deciding what you really want.

Even if it takes years. Don't just get any old design, or a design you sortof like just to "have a tattoo". You will, I promise you, regret it later on.
Be sure it's something unique and something that holds special meaning for you. Yeah, I like people to see my tattoos, but they're not really for anyone else. They're for me. I know too many people that just rushed out and got a tattoo becuase they thought it would be cool.. it's a few years later, and they hate it.

Don't use a design straight from the flash (tattoo flash - the "examples" in shops), or something straight out of a book. Let's say you get micky mouse (or any other well-known icon/logo/symbol/character) tattooed on you. The first time you see someone else with mickey tattoed on them, you'll hate your own tattoo. Point is, if it isn't a unique design, someone else WILL have it. Make the art your own before you get it done. Any good tattoo artists will encourage this and should be very helpful in making the piece unique. If they aren't, go to someone else.
And speaking of the artist, be sure to check out their previous work. Not just the photos they took the second that piece was finshed, but try to talk to people that have had this artists work on them for at least a year. This will let you know how their work heals, and how well it holds up over time. Shoddy needlework can look great at first, but can blur and get all kinds of messed up in later years. A truly good tattoo artist's work will be clean and still look damn good years later. This is why it's best to go with an artist people have recommended to you, rather than just picking the first guy/gal to come to the counter in whichever random tattoo shop you decide to walk into.

Above all else, take your time. When the time is right and the design is right, you'll know. It'll hit you like a ton of bricks and you'll be certain. Just don't rush.

And for god's sake.. don't get barbed wire around your arm, the tazmanian devil, or a freakin sun symbol on your back. For starters, the tattoo artist will hate having to do one of those for the 10,000th time. On the plus side, you'll be able to join the "thoughtless tattoo" club with the rest of the barbed-wire/sun/taz wearing sheeple.

As for ideas... I used my first tattoo (covers my left upper arm) to mark a moment in life. Becuase of this, it has massive meaning to me. It works as a reminder every morning when I see it in the mirror. My second, covering my right upper arm, was also to mark a moment.. and ties in with the first. The rest follow a similar trend. Just make sure it's important to you.

And.. I'll shut up now ;)

*chuckles*

Great info, Deca, really. I know that I'm considering a tatt in the future, and have been for the last few years. I don't want something grand or sweeping.. but I do want something, and it'll be something I design and care for. All of what you spieled reinforces that.

Some really great advice there.. that rocks. :)

Okay, I'ma stop butting in on someone else' topic, now, promise. :P

D00d Decavolt your words have power and meaning i swear to something, i'd say god but i'm not a religiuos man and i think i'd give the all knowing creator a heart attack if i started swearing his name, but serieosly man your words have impact. my tattoo is something i have considered for years and no i hate the barbwire/taz/sun ppl to, i'm not going for a public icon to the ppl, i'm going for my own inner icon for myself, when i was 17 before i had my right wrist shattered in 5 places i used to draw alot, and also used to collect the sonic the hedgehog comics like clockwork, and in one issue the badnik Robotnik finally won and turned sonic into a mecha well that inspired me to to start drawing mechs of all kinds and got me on my whole mecha speal ie..(GUNDAM, Patlabor, Pilot Can., ect..) then got me on my whole anime kick. i was a fan of pokemon before pokemon had fans, what i'm trying to get at is i had some major anime art i drew back in the day and back then i wanted an orginal anime style tat, then i wanted something with a dragon, had an idea for a very interesting tattoo about a year ago and it had very deep meaning to me but i'm not sure i want to go with that now. but enough of me ranting

O.o

damn, deca... great speech!
i've stuck to symbols so far, took the idea, sketched it out and continued until i was satisfied. my first tat is the only one i ever question, i still love it to this day, but the band's popularity skyrocket has put what i used in several flash books i've seen at shops in years since. that one is "sin" from the nine inch nails cd single, mainly because i liked the visual art used to create it and sin fits nicely don't you think? ;) the other two are that ankh on my back, and the wiccan symbol for fire on my left arm (fire being the ruling element for an aries), which of course i altered a bit, making it appear more like a triskele or tribal design. always try to give it a custom notch no matter how simple the design is, unique is always the most satisfying.

I have nothing really to stress here, as decavolt did an amazing job of that already. i can only add that for the least amount of pain make sure there's some muscle tissue under your placement. vibrating needles on flesh-over-bone areas hurts much worse... i know what i can stress...
CAREFUL: as with piercing, the feel of getting a tattoo can be highly addictive, if i was rich i would be covered by now.

Well, I only had mine a few months... And as to her disliking it, it's more the thing itself... That, and she didn't like kissin it... Which is a bit of a prob...
I don't mind takin it out for her... Not at all! I just rather miss it, I must admit... I like bein a bit vulgar from time to time (every 10 min) and flickin a pierced tongue at peeps was just so much fun! :P
Especially old geesers and ladies... Hehe!

Oh well... I guess I'll either get it redone when the time to part comes... Or accept that it's gone... *sigh*
Well, if I could accept it with my sanity... This should be no prob!

now that's just cute. :D
but i gotta ask... how was the feeling? ...and watching the art evolve as tiny droplets of blood pulsed out of your arm after the needle passed? do you feel you are going to need more ink now?
