Preliminary Stages: RKVA, Rubi-Kan Virtual Arena!

Postby Tarryk » Tue Oct 21, 2003 4:30 pm

I've been tossing this idea around lightly for a while, and I think it's getting close to time to set it up, if it gets appropriate feedback. With help, this might end up being a great pasttime for AO players, if it's integrated well.

I'll be starting out light. Obviously I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to a project like this, but it's an idea that would be worth appointing people to directorship in the future, based on how much time they can spend on it.

For now, the "basic" game (my ideas for the "advanced" game are a little crazy and half-formed at the moment, and I'm always open to suggestions...but remember, keeping it simple this time around)...

The RolePlay Scenario: It's Rubi-Ka, tens of thousands of years in the future, after all. Why wouldn't there be virtual arenas? Of course there are "regular" arenas where you can walk in and start butchering each other in the world of AO, but wouldn't it be cool if there were an entire integrated "action" arena that could allow you to truly morph into your character's persona in a complete different setting? VR inside VR, baby!

Introducing: The RKVA (Rubi-Kan Virtual Arena)

Where: The blood room in reets retreat

When: Pre-planned events

How: Have Quake III: Arena installed and an entrance fee of 20,000 Rubi-Ka credits (and a lot of caffeine)

You step into the blood room and the games handler is there collecting entrance fees. You have already RSVP'd via the request on the last Talk Deviant, and/or won a free pass on one of the GSP shows. You hand over the money (or the free pass), and the games handler immediately sends you a /tell with the IP info, what your Arena player name and gender is expected to be, and the password to join the server.

You have a seat in the blood room and put on your RKVA body suit ((aka you log out of AO and boot up Quake III: Arena, set up the player info the games handler gave you, then log in with the IP/pword info he provided))

You are suddenly sucked into the virtual arena, given a machine gun and some bullets, and you patiently wait for the announcement over GSP (possibly killing time by killing and warming up with the others who have already entered the arena).

Suddenly the call is made. The GSP announcer appears in the login listing as a Spectator, and shouts over the air introductions to all the competitors in tonight's event, including their guild and profile on Rubi-Ka, followed by "RKVA begins, and the game is on!!"

The map changes, and you are thrown head-first into 15 minutes of blood-thirsty war, the GSP announcer yelling incoherantly as (s)he tries to monitor the event live to all the GSP listeners over a furious barrage of hardcore electronica and metal. You feel the wind of various selected spectator ghosts whipping around the arena, recording it for the final compiled movie of the event that will later be available for download, complete with the DJ's announcements during the game.

The winner is apparent at the end of the round, receiving a take of 1,000,000 credits from the games keeper once (s)he rematerializes in the blood room at Reets. The runners up each receive 500,000 cerdits.

Well? Good start? Horrid idea?

I am SO in!!! The only prob is, you need a new pass for every time, no biggie, and peep's should prolly keep their in game names... But that would be SOO cool... I'd even buy Q:3 Arena for it... (I went with UT2oo3 instead)

This Tarr, is one of your finer moments, I really must say!
And now... PvP is suddenly REAL... Not just some GIMP who's got too much time and no bloody skills! To win this, they gotta be good!...
Although I think I might have difficulty adopting into this whole... Guns thing... Shooting, how primitive!
*snicker*

*/me hisses, whips his tail once, jumps 9 feet into the air, clings onto the sealing and races off into a ventilation duct...*

Sounds awesome, but just Quake III?

Maybe CS?

Or other games?

Maybe change here and there?

And 20k is a bit high.

Maybe later on you could put in different leagues with higher fees the higher the persons league.

Just some constructive criticism =D

The free pass idea and all that is awesome tho. Ide DEFINITLEY be a sponsor or at least a devoted player =D

Keep it off CS... As it's not a 1 person game, and it's not fast enough to be a "In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war" game... This is thousands of years into the future... The adrennaline has to pump!
And 2oK seems fine! It makes things interesting... But maybe the prizes should be a little smaller... Or MAX one runner up... Make it as merciless as the game, no waiting for the slow, and no prizes for loosers... Also adds to the Cyber Arena adrennaline pumped feel... You win, or you don't... No one ever rememberes the guy who came second anyway!
(I said guy, cus that's how the saying goes, I'm not saying females can't play... My best friend happens to be mean at CS, so I know they can!)

Thanks, Tacz, and indeed all those points are already factors in the train of my brain at the moment on this project, but as I said: Basic mode first, I'll get into the advanced stuff (or an appointed someone-else will) if and when whatever snags get ironed out. For now, Q3 is the best way to start I think (and by far the easiest to demo-record, rip to avi, and creatively spectate, which are HUGE plusses).

As far as the money, you may be right. I'll think on that too. (it was just ballpark figures) :)

Also agreed, Oddysee, for the most part. CS seems less likely to be good for this sort of thing for a multitude of reasons, many of which you stated, and also including the ease of cheating. I'll always love CS, but I don't think it'll equate to this idea well without some MAJOR planning that I just don't have time for.

q3a is definatly the best choice for this.
the only other alternative i could think of would be U4eF,
it has not as much atmosphere as q3a but it has this fun/freak/crazy/cantfindrightwordforit factor.

racing games:
Ballistics.

UT2oo3 has the setting, the weapons, and the game mod's... But Q3A is just SO much darker! (and less graphicly demanding, so everyone can actually play, and the Demo wont be some 400MB beast!)
Also... The boddy parts that fly about when peeps are killed... hehe, priceless!!!

Yup, those were factors too. UT2k3 is way more demanding on the system, and isn't quite as menacing as Q3A.

Plus, in Q3A, you can go absolutely nuts with recorded demos. Like in the playback movie, you could replay cool scenes in bullet-time-esque motion, even create a "free-roaming" camera to use within the recorded demo to reshoot a scene from a completely different angle. Way cool stuff that I've always wanted a good reason to toy around with. :)

Hehe, me too. UT Morpheus map on low-grav has always been a fave of mine, right up there with the jump-pad levels on Q3A at 0.8 timescale.

So UT1 is a potential for the future, but I've never worked with demos on that before, but I know Q3A demos inside and out...which is another reason that's a first-use game. :)
