If you guys have a few spair minutes, you may want to check these out.
Basically, they are all demonstrations for .the.product, which is a kit for making demos, and it just so happens to have some insane compression tools. How good? The first one was 1.9gb of data, compressed, it's now 64kb (oh yeah, the first two are demo's in 64kb, forgot to mention that).

fr-08 - ".das .produkt"
fr-019 - "poem to a horse"
fr025 - "The Popular Demo"
These are just my favorites, you can find so many, many more here.

If your expecting a little cube floating around, rotating with some transparency, or something lame like that, you could never be more wrong.

The first two are full fledged demo's, running longer then 2 minutes each (Maybe even 5, I don't know, I was to busy watching them to keep track of time), and come complete with decent soundtracks.

The third is what they can do with a few mb, instead of a few kb. It's insane, and the music to it is catchy indeed.

This isn't "new" stuff either, since these things have been floating around since '00, or there about, and many of you may have already seen these before, but what the heck, I'll post them anyway.

Watch out when downloading and trying stuff. I recommend that nobody here download these. You might wind up losing your AO account, if these are trojan programs.

It compresses 1.9 gig to 64kb? I call bullshit. That is impossible.

Not saying you are a liar, Oriknama. But it's a rather awkward first post.

"Hi never posted here before, but download these files that are too good to be true"....

Better to be careful then not these days. Too many hackings going on.

Deth brings up a very good point, and for that reason I'm not going to be checking these out. If anyone else wants to and isn't afraid of potential worms or trojans, do it at your own risk and let us know.

Yeah, I can kind of see where this is going, since it was my first post, and none of you know me. You can always download it and run it on a dummy machine to cool your conscience, if that helps.

scene.org, as far as I know, doesn't host any virus infected files on their server. I have all of the farbrausch demos, and I downloaded all of them from there, and I don't have any viruses running around eating things on my system.

Anyway, the 1.9gb does deem like a lot, but I don't know. I don't really doubt it after watching all of them, considering they fit an extremely long and beautifully done demo into 64kb, complete with music.

And yeah, sorry if I scared anyone... :cry:

That's the name of the demo, yes.
Atleast the larger one anyway.
It's a discoball man dancing in a discoball world, or something... like that...

I'm even going to point out a free online based virus scanner, and one the absolute best virus scanner (In my opinion, atleast)

Scan the files if you like. There are no viruses. I'm kind of sad you all feel that way though, and I'm suprised no noones even bothered looking at the site.

OK, Gridstream Productions is an entertainment/radio station guild. The community members here don't generally just start sharing files, and/or links, unless its just a fun little picture. The purpose of these forums is not to toss out some new awsome compression tool. Oriknama, your intentions may be good, and harmless, but the General/Feedback Forums is probably the wrong place to share that with us.

We generally keep the chatter about GSP.....and it often goes off-topic, and thats okay, but pluggin some links with unknown programs is just a bit "off topic", especially as your "first" post. Sit down, take a gander at us, and feel free to join in our community. We don't require that you have fancy, smancy disco balls to post and talk to us

Just as a general comment for all, online virus scanners wont catch everything. What wont they catch?

Spywares
Adwares
Some trojans
Specific trojans written for specific purposes
Any javascript mischief
home page hijacking and redirecting
holes in your computer's security (go to www.microsoft.com if you use Windows, and let the "update" section check and see which security updates you need).

The bottom line is just be careful what you download and run from the internet. If you dont know how to scan and clean your computer of the above listed issues, then you probably shouldnt be downloading and running files.

Files from well known and established sites will most likely be ok (such as getting security patches from www.microsoft.com), but otherwise be extremely careful.

Some tools to combat bad PC mojo:

:arrow:

www.ad-aware.com (a good spyware and adware remover)
:arrow:

housecall.antivirus.com (an online anti virus scanner. Just one of many tools you should use)
:arrow:

a router (like a Linksys) or a program like Zonealarm, for firewall protection
:arrow:

www.microsoft.com (security updates, especially for WinXP and Outlook users)
:arrow:

http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/ (This site is for spyware that keeps returning, hijacked homepages, or other oddities. It is advanced information, only for if you cannot remove a problem).

They have to be seen to be believed. great stuff.

Of course as with almost everything I download I virus scan em.
It's a shame there's so much crap out there we can't trust files any more

The net's not safe any more at all though. a firewall is no longer optional, it's an ESSENTIAL. While setting up my new machine, I had no firewall in for 30 minutes max, and got 2 versions of MS Blaster like worms. Used to be viruses were mainly in dodgy attachments. now they just come out of nowhere!

Wow, yeah, couple people went a little overboard on the paranoia, here. We (Deth and I) just made a little note that we can't fully trust something that difficult to judge without some sort of validation. We don't need to start flaming on Oriknama about it, it's just as likely that everything's kosher.

Even my paranoia kicked in a little at first for fr08... 64k to 1.9gb.. that's not quite what it seems...

Basically the very small program has all that's needed to generate that much audio and visual data in real time during the demo. It's not really compression as such.

None of thse particular programs are viruses or trojans. They don't access the hard drive at all once they're loaded, they don't access the net at all, and they don't leave anything in RAM when they exit..

They might hurt your eyes and ears though :twisted:

These are legit demos from the demo scene. If you don't trust the original author you can go and download these files at http://www.scene.org/. Just search for the demos and download them.

As for 1.9gb data down to 64kb that is impossible. Anyone stating this is the case is lying. The fact still remains, out of the 64kb you get an awesome demo

. The truth is that the demo is not to show any compression scheme. It's all about how a programmer can make use of 64kb of storage to present the coolest demo.

fr08 - the product was submitted as an entry for the 64kb demo compo.

Speaking of protection.
Currently I'm using AVAST http://www.avast.com/
they got a free (yeah realoly free) version of their AntiVirus soft.
it supports mail chck, share software, messengers etc etc. highly configurable. I tried this one and another free one.
And also tried a few commercial ones, but I have to say this is the best virus checker I've used s far. (I like it more than norton even)
best of all, free virus definitions. (obviously Avast exist in a pro version, but the normal free one is more than enough for me right now)

Just as a quick FYI to those who want a decent free virus checker.
