The Further Adventures of Katy The n00b

Postby Katy » Sat May 10, 2003 9:38 am

Having attained the amazingly high level of 11 on my Omni alt, I was thrilled. :D
One more mission, I thought, one more time, see if I can reach 12 before I go to bed.
Riiiiiiiiiiight. No. :?
So, I pass up some missions in Rome Blue (where I happened to be, and pretty much the only place I knew how to get around) for a mission in Galway Shire. It was worth a good deal of credits and I was saving up for a new doc nano. Now I'd missioned in the Shire once before... and got so lost on my way back that it took me damn near 3 hours to figure out where the hell Rome was.
Well, I've done it once, surely it'll be easier this time!
Riiiiiiiiiiiiight. No. :?
Don't get me wrong. I didn't get lost on my way back from the mission like last time. No. I one upped that. I got lost on my way TO the frellin mission!
Actually, thats not entirely true. I found the mission alright. Was about 2 feet from the entrance. That was when I realized I couldn't actually MOVE to the entrance.
Let me backtrack a bit. Have you ever found yourself in a place that you're pretty sure the creators of the game never intended anyone to go?
Well, as I left Rome for this lovely mission I turned the direction my compass told me to go. And met a lovely fence.
Damn fence! I thought somewhat annoyed. Gonna take twice as long if I have to go around this stupid mountain!
That was when I had the bright idea of trying to bypass the fence right where it met said Mountain, and it was only about an inch tall.
It didn't work at first. For that matter it didn't work at second or third either. But right when I was about to give up and go ALL the way around, I somehow made it over the fence!
Rock on! I think happily.
I traveled a few more feet down the deserted road when the compass tells me to go directly over the mountain. No problem! And up the mountain we go. Slowly. Very slowly. It's way steep and I have to keep sidestepping. After several minutes (and the brief thought that it may have been quicker to just go around the damn thing) I make it up.
So there I am on the top of a mountain. And it's flat. And grey. And BIG. I begin running toward the mission.
After several minutes of encountering NOTHING, I begin to get worried.
Of coarse it wasn't until I made it to the other side of the vast mountain of death that I realized what was wrong. It wouldn't let me down. No matter what I did.
Well, I could try a /stuck. I think to myself. But thats silly, I can get down, I'll just keep running along the edge till I find a place thats not so steep!
So I run...
and run.....
and run.......
*I'm* beginning to get tired from watching my alt run forever.
Finally I see a place I can get down fairly easily, so I do. and find myself stuck at the foot of the mountain instead. Crap. I climb back up. And run.
I swim a river that is mysteriously flowing upwards and zone. Really have no clue where I'm at now. It flat, grey and boring up here. So I run.
I keep trying to get down to no avail.
As I'm running, I see another zone wall.
And pass it.
Interesting, I think, it doesn't come up here. Shibby.
After another millenia of running, and the realization that I can no longer feel the finger thats been holding down the "w" key, I try to get off the mountain again.
And it WORKS! Yay! Go me! I rock! I am the most rockin n00b on rubi-ka! I shall do a dance now! :D
So I turn myself around and head back the way I came, this time thru the forest. As I come up to the zone wall I saw earlier I encounter a new problem. I can't zone.
I hang my head in agony at my own idiocy. I didn't zone coming here, I won't zone going back, 'cause it thinks I'm still there. Oh hell. :x
At this point I cancel the mission, it's just not gonna happen. Then I turn and head the other way, maybe I can find a different zone that will let me thru. As I'm running thru the forest I notice a vast field ahead. Looks kinda funny. Looks almost... *bangs head on desk* incomplete! I can go no further.
With the mountain on one side (which I refuse to climb again) a useless zone on the other, and an incomplete playfield on the third, I head the only way left to me. Eventually I hit a road. Not that it'll do me any good, I'm totally blocked in.
As I hit the useless zone again I sigh in defeat. scream out something nasty to the empty world I am in, and /terminate. A graceful bow-out if I've ever done one.
The n00b hath been defeated by the game.
I picked up my remains, sat my n00b ass down, and camped out. If I'd had to run even another four feet to the reclaim terminal I may very well have gone insane.

Eep! I don't think I've ever experienced anything quite like that. It's probably a good thing that I haven't, cause I'd have broken my monitor or something. :(

I had something similar(same thing, but to a lesser degree since it was obvious it happened right away) happen during my first week...hell, EVERYTHING went wrong my first week. I called an ARK about it, and he wound up looking around behind the zone wall since it was so cool looking.

I'm sorry that happened, and I understand :-(

Wait till you die about 5 times in the same mission.

Hehe! it's very rare that happens.

What you experieneced is um.. the "landscape" beyond the zone. (it lets us have um nearly endless distance on the area around.
I've had the same happen long ago near newland lol..
And at Broken Shores (temple/city of home) the entire south is sorta just stopping.
BUT once I glitched thru. and that sout area is huuuuuge.
Valleys, roads, islands and all kinds of stuff.
It's the size of an entire zone down there...unused.

You guys know about that memory leak that AO's supposed to have? I think Katy found where all the memory's leaking too. Land with the equivalent value of a 20 credit chip on a deserted planet with no cola products in sight.

Danger Katy Kozar! Danger!

Katie and you should team and take some screenshots of what happens.(so long as that doesn't get broken).. I'm sure you'll be able to find the exit point of a black hole or something on one of the missions you two do. *laugh*

I know those "incomplete" area very well every time I go out for a joyous flight in my Yalmaha all of a sudden the screen flashes text that says "Entering Unknow Area" its a incomplete area in the middle of no where I have had it happen in Rome, Greater Tir, Borealis, Omni Ent lol the list goes on I find that flying 50miles in the air will greater the chance of entering unknown area so from now on I fly loooow hope this will help any yalm flyin n00b

Well, in all my time on RK2... I have realized a few other fun places to get "lost"

1. Fly towards the big building in Home (Broken Shores) near the big mysterious pyramid. Then fly around the little crater. Eventually, you will break thru the invisible wall... and meet another invisible wall. I havent tried getting through the second wall, but it was pretty cool in any case. :o)

2. Running out of the east gates of Omni-1 Entertainment can sometimes land you in "never never land", and you can just run around... and never go anywhere. kinda different.

3. Sometimes, when lag is REALLY bad, and you are zoning into Newland City, you will sometimes get the "server failed playshifting" message... Just run thru the gate, and when you get to the whompas, you will see they go to Tir and MMD. then you generally auto-zone into the correct NLC. Maybe that is why NLC is so laggy.. there is actually 2 zones?

IF you have to do some running.. Try hitting the 0 on the num. pad. (The forever-walk button) Im too lazy to hold the "w".

Kinda reminds me of Green Acres from Ultima Online... It was basically a HUGE blank area that had nothing but, well, grass. Apparently it was used by GMs to play with things, usually to prepare for some sort of event. Like say, try to decide what kind of gm-controlled monster would be the right strength for an anticipated crowd.

Long story short, it sorta became a legend amongst players, and a few had runes(they teleported you in UO) that would go there...of course doing so was entirely illegal, but rumors of VERY strange monsters arose from there, like an insta-killing black dragon which had odd abilities NEVER seen in game.

You have to wonder if ARKs and GMs in AO have an equivalent of that... And you just HAVE to wonder what they do there. No wait, Funcom's not as cheap as OSI...they probably have their own servers to do that stuff on. :P

I feel your pain :x ... I had alot of problems with that myself, but that was, until I got my hands on a special map ... found here, http://www.nepentheim.com/rkplayfields/ ... phuge.html

This is the HUGE map, and very detailed, though the download is like 124 megs ... not for a dial-up connection ... you can find other versions of this map, in smaller ... all the instructions you will ever need are on it, and the map is VERY useful ... enhances your gaming experience lotsa! :D
