I'll be doing more work on it tonight (Monday, March 10th), and again on Wednesday if neccessary.

So, either some time tonight (check around 9pm EST) or Wednesday it should be up on acidplanet.

Thanks for the props, peeps. That's inspiration if I ever had it. ^.^;

Technical Question

Postby Recombinant » Mon Mar 10, 2003 11:19 pm

How do you get your stuff so wide? I can't get that amount of stereo width... and I've been trying.... It's one of the biggest problems with my music.. I need the width and I can't get it.....

That's one of the neat things about Acid DJ Pro. Every single track is automatically set to stereo by default, and all of the preset loops (like the percussion tracks, 90% of which is default Acid stuff that I use) are already set to a perfect stereo feel. Any mono tracks I get I just switch to stereo in Sound Forge and create VERY minor adjustments to the right or left channel to get the seperation feel.

*turns this topic into Ask Tarryk your music questions Damnit*

man... You people and acidpro... although that width is freckin KILLER... Makes me want to use it just for the width....

Actually I was playing with cubase today and I found that there's a nifty plugin called hyperprism that has a live edit Stereo seperation device and it makes for Width of destructive proportions... Now I've just gotta figure out how to single one track for width while leaving other tracks in mono or mock stereo... The Amount that stereo adds to a track is scary... like... there's so much mid that just get's left out of a track without seperation...
Makes even the tamest of tracks insane....

While on the Subject of width (Last question I swear... I've gotta lvl a lot tonight)

do you think that all tracks in a song should be of equal width? I noticed on a lot of Rammstein tracks that their guitar is just fricken HUGE but their drums are only slightly wide... I'm assuming that's where soundforge comes in for those mock seperation, right?

I should probably get soundforge at some point again... isn't that also by the guys that make ACIDpro?

do you think that all tracks in a song should be of equal width?

Unanswerable, depends on the song. But I'm sure there is such a thing as overdoing it. I think one of my songs in particular, namely "Too Many Changes", I think is a big-time overdo on the stereo seperation (even though there is no actual utilization like panning or anything in the song).

A good tip to try: When I'm writing music, I ofted have the midrange on my receiver turned almost all the way down. All I can hear is the treble and bass, and therefore I'm forced to focus on them. For some reason that eludes me, that actually helps a song sound way more meaty, even concerning the midrange that I could hardly hear while writing it.

And yeah, Sound Forge is made by Sonic Foundry, same as Acid DJ Pro.
