When I was your age...

Postby Tristalyn » Fri Jan 17, 2003 5:32 am

When I was a kid adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what
with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning uphill both ways
through year 'round blizzards carrying their younger siblings on their backs to their one-room schoolhouse where they maintained a straight-A
average despite their full-time after-school job at the local textile mill where they worked for 35 cents an hour just to help keep their family from starving to death! And I remember promising myself that when I grew up there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But.... Now that I've reached the ripe old age of twenty-two, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so fuckin' easy!
I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a goddamned Utopia!
And I hate to say it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it! I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet--we wanted
to know something, we had to go to the library and look it up ourselves! And there was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter with a
pen!-- and then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the fuckin' mailbox and it would take like a week to get there! And
there were no MP3s or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to go to the record store and shoplift it yourself! Or we had to wait around all
day to tape it off the radio and the DJ'd usually talk over the beginning
and fuck it all up! You want to hear about hardship?
You couldn't just download porn! You had to bribe some homeless dude to buy you a copy of "Hustler" at the 7-11! It was either that or
jackoff to the lingerie section of the JC Penney catalog! Those were your
options! We didn't have fancy shit like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was it could be your boss, your mom, a collections agent, your drug dealer, you didn't know!!! You just had to pick it up and take your chances, mister! And we didn't have any fancy Sony Play station videogames with high-resolution
3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like "Space Invaders"
and "Asteroids" and the graphics sucked ass! Your guy was a little
square! You had to use your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win, the game just kept getting harder and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!
When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the same height! A tall guy sat in front
of you, you were fucked! And sure,we had cable television, but back then
that was only like 20 channels and there was no onscreen menu! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! And there was no Cartoon Network! You could only get cartoons on Saturday morning...
....D'ya hear what the fuck I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK, you
spoiled little bastards! That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids
today have got it too easy You're spoiled, I swear to God! You guys wouldn't last five minutes back in 1987!

Grab, you are soo right. I've got many fond memories of looking at the JC Penny's and Sear catalog... okay, maybe not fond but it's all there was. I wasn't one of the fortunite people that could get access to the Victoria Secrets catalog. I remember when computer RPG's were all text based, no graphics what-so-ever.

Damn kids.

Preach on sista girl! Preach on!
I'm 21, and I know exactly what you're sayin'!

You forgot cell phones! Ooooh cell phones. ^_^
Suuure there were cells back in the day, but unlike todays youth, not everyone and their little sister carried one! If you had one, it was bigger and heavier than a brick! And reception was shitty! If you moved at all, you'd run into radio waves and kill the whole thing or something!

Yeah, the 80's where hell for convience compaired to todays simplicity. ^_^ *shakes a cane at all the youngins*

Preach it!!!

I am 23 and well I didn't have a Palm or a damn cell phone...

Wasn't any electronic organizers to tote around, we had fat pads... you wrote everything in a silly oversized notebook pad...

No cell phone to contact everyone on... hell cell phones were expensive and outrageously heavy and bulky to hold or use...

And what about these rolling backpacks??? What tha hell is that? To damn lazy to carry the damn things?!?

If you guys are old, does that make me middle aged?

Postby The Irish Guy » Sun Jan 19, 2003 6:07 pm

So 22 is old, 12 is young.. I guess I should be going through a mid-life crisis at age 18, then.. I'm old enough to remember the shit you guys are bitching about, but young enough to have spent my early teens with technology.

But I'm allowed to complain too, Dammit! You remember The Black Cauldron? The game you could play on your 286 IBM? And ooooh! It has COLOR!

Remember DOS games!? I'm not talking about Doom and Quake and those fancy early 90s games. I'm talking about that one where you were a little worm and you had to eat those freaking apples, but you always ATE YOUR OWN TAIL! WTF? HOW IS A SNAKE STUPID ENOUGH TO EAT ITSELF? WOULDN'T IT JUST SLITHER OVER ITSELF!? HUH!?
VISUAL BASIC, MOTHERF%#$ER, DO YOU SPEAK IT!?

Yanno Win3.11?? Remember SKIFREE? There's your real-time action strategy game.

The Atari? Yeah. I know about the Atari. Lemme tell ya, in '87 that rectangle with a hat was a dead ringer for Harrison Ford. Had a whip and everything.

Unlike Trist, I actually managed to BEAT Pitfall on the Commodore 64. Despite the 15 second delay between hitting a button and having the game react.

Two words, folks. Police Quest. Hmm? Hmm!? How's about a little OLD SKOOL SIERRA FOR YA? Huh!? You wanna talk about KING'S QUEST? DO YA?

And in conclusion:
Contra.

Ahh, the police quest series! Those games are the best! Still have an original version of Police Quest 3 for Amiga in my closet.

Yep, I have been the owner of C-64, Amiga 600, Amiga 1200, Amiga 1200T (rebuilt a standard amiga 1200 into a PC tower casing. With CDRom phat HD and turbo card), and a multitude of PC's.

Amiga is so far the best all around computer I have owned :)

Remember back when you couldn't get cheat codes and walk throughs for every game out there? Now that was hell. Spending hours trying to find a key for a chest just to discover there was a hidden door that you had walked by 50 times. Or the cheat code that turned you into god and and you could nuke the bad guys from all the way across the map. *grins evily* It adds alot more fun to the games nowdays going back and seeing what the cheat codes do. I never get tired of Age of Empires for that one reason. hehe

Ahh yes, that was one of the main selling factors of those old gaming magazines. Not to mention those huge strategy guides...they're still made, but maybe two people still buy them. But I have to admit, cheating has come a long way...both good and bad. Now "real" cheating is usually more like hacking...

Having a guy float through walls while killing everyone in TFC = bad.

Having Aerith bonk Sephiroth in the head at the end of FF7 with her staff(doing absolute shit damage, but making that damned cool "bonk" noise) = good.

Then again, thinking back on it, the way you cheated in most C64 games was usually by hacking, too...
