Should they make a sequel to AO?

Talk about anything!

Personally, I don't think it gets much more hardcore than assuming the identity of your character. I mean, I go play FPS games to wind down. Just relax and quit thinking...not that mindless leveling requires much thinking, but then, that's not the part of AO that's fun.

yeah fps is great i play a lot of it
espacially dod even if its not a sf surrounding.

but the good thing about ao is:
- different enemys
- no one blames ya for idling
- u need to think a little more ( ever teamed with 3 crats?)
- big inv
- alot more
- ....
....
- ....
- oh yeah those weird ppl doing a radio station on rubi-ka

but the problem is that the fights arent that much of a challenge like in a fps.

Depends on what you mean by a challenge. AO won't be challenging your reflexes, that's for sure. Though, AO *will* challenge your preparation and tactics. FPS games are usually meant so that one on one battles are perfectly fine, and team battles sprout from that line of thought. AO was made with team battles in mind, and one on one battles tend to just be lessened versions of that. At least, that's how I see it...which doesn't mean a heck of a lot.

nope dont think that they sproud.
indeed doesnt mean anything.

and the challenge in team fights and i mean team vs mobs, is to target the right mob out of the couple of dozens in the room. like this one is rooted, this charmed, this calmed, those r distracted by the pets, this one is already dead.....
and if i would play ao for this, well i wouldnt play ao.

Heres how I see it in FPS's:
____________________________________
This guys pinned

This guys about to get blow un anyway

This guys wounded

This guys a good target + getting shot at by a sniper

This guys in my sights and aiming at me

Which do I shoot?
_____________________________________
this runs through my head 20 times a second in FPS's, even faster than the framerate sometimes, but that rush of thought when I get into a battle really satisfies me and my need for an addrenaline rush. Energy

I see good traits of both FPS and Turn-Based, and I play both regularly. (Max Payne, although not technically an "FPS", still fits the bill and remains my favorite single-player game. CounterStrike is my favorite network FPS.)

But there's just no way to introduce a massive amount of roleplaying into a world based on FPS battles. So Turn-Based, which AO is still and probably will be for a long time on the top of, is the place for GSP. :)

Heh, actually I meant pvp. FPS games have nothing comparable to pvm.
Edit: Actually, I just remembered Mook Matches from The Opera, a Half-Life mod. That's as close to pvm as it'll get. Damned fun, I might add.

I still think you're nuts for that. TFC pwnxorz CS. :P

I wouldn't be so fast to judge this, actually. In a few years, when servers are a lot stronger than they are now, I wouldn't doubt that a few massively multiplayer FPS games successfully went places. I mean, as it is right now, my friends will watch me play Jedi Outcast(best Star Wars game ever, in my opinion) and say "Man, I wish online rpgs could be like that, only stat based and persistent."

Okay, I'll concede that point, Tir. One day, it may yet happen.

On the CS tip, it's all about immersion and realism. TFC is very unrealistic to me. It's like a halfway point between Quake III (cartoony and ultra-unrealistic) and CS (total realism), which is just not enough.

Any game that allows the ability to run at mach 10, leaps buildings in a single bound, take minimal damage, and still take 12 shots with a rocket launcher during the leap and hit every time, is not the game for me.

I like a game where when you start hearing those bullets spilling over your general area, you DIVE for cover, knowing damn well that you might even take damage doing just that and STAY DOWN unless you have a death wish, until you know you've got someone laying down suppression fire so that you can poke your head out long enough to get a bearing on which way to run--at a normal human speed--like a bat out of hell for that bomb site while the pitter patter of high-velocity ammo rains down around you and you have no choice but to spray-and-pray, knowing damn well that you won't hit anything unless you can get just that single precious second to crouch down and take a good aimed shot....THAT's my game. :)

That's where we differ in game tastes. I don't play games for realism. I play it for fun, and to me, juggling a guy in the air with rockets is fun. CS itself is sorta fun, but the way it's made(if you die, you sit out for the rest of the game) just limits the fun in every way.

I mean hey, if AO was realistic, it wouldn't be AO. :P

Also, you've never lived until you've fired a rocket at someone's feet as they jumped, launching them into the air, then timing another rocket so it hits them square in the chest as they fall, sending them halfway across the map into the water. Hell, I've had it done to me and it was still fun! That's the sort of thing where you just sit back and go "Weeeeeeee!!!"

Speaking of "Weeeeee!!", Subspace was yet another fun one. Especially those "extreme" zones that had the ability to slow down your computer(at that time at least) by the sheer number of explosions one ship could make.

Edit:
Tarryk wrote:Any game that allows the ability to run at mach 10, leaps buildings in a single bound, take minimal damage, and still take 12 shots with a rocket launcher during the leap and hit every time, is not the game for me.

Isn't that AO in a nutshell? :P

Yes, VERY good point, and bad wording on my part. I love AO because of it's unrealism. When I'm roleplaying, I want a detached yet immersive setting. AO is just that.

When I'm in an action game, I want the immersion to be realistic, because i'm not roleplaying a science fiction character, I'm going for the heart-attack moment of near-death experience, in which case the more realistic the better.

Edited In: I can see your point on liking the unlreastic FPS for the exact same reason that I love the realistic ones. As it were, it's all just a matter of what floats your boat--or, in this case, stops your heart. :)

And, occasionally, it doesn't hurt to hit a launch pad in Quake 3, and soar over your opponents whilst raining hellfire and screaming "WEEEEEE".

Tarryk if you want extreme realsim get Operation Flashpoint, you can fly blackhawks, 3 shots kill often less, no shooting while waking, and can replicate being shot down in a blackhawk 15 times. Only problem is without downloads the sound is crappy, but download a few addons and you can have THIS... lol

Bad pic, here we go...

lol

That makes a lot of sense though, no one would or should want to roleplay ina game with extreme realism, thats just adding one more hardship to it.

AO has it all (Besides FC gimping a class or two). Atmosphere, story, combat, classes, guns and close combat, fun, simplisticness but also hardcore if you go with Implants. I will be going back to AO When WC III Starts to lag for me, no doubt about it. And Planetside will attract me, but not as much.

I might start rping with my OO Soldier Torandorum, since Obsidian orders falling apart like the soviet union, any clanners that want to, you could probably invade OO's towers and win with ease. Anyone know of a clan or omni guild of rpers, and any headups about it?[/url]

tarryk?
u wann ahave realistic fps?
why do u play cs?

cs is the very most unrealistc fps there ever was ! ! ! !

if u put in cs a gun in the mouth of someone else and pull the trigger it happens 7 of 10 times that u hit yaself in the back! the other 3 times u hit ya foot!

i prefer bullets that dont fly in a 90° direction from the barrel!

fi u wanna play a realy good fps, play dod!
well, it has stil 2 or 3 little bugs but its pure fun !
and ya own bullet wont hit ya in ya back.

not wanting to intrude, but heres an excerpt from another "discuccion" about the differnces between Realistic FPS shooters (ones that at least try to use the laws of Physics, and weapondry of a modern age) to Unrealistic FPS games (ones that you tote around a 400lb rifle that you can blow cities up with, while taking 4 rocket launcher rounds in the chest and grinnning)

"I Like Realistic FPS games for a few cardinal Reasons. The Rush you get as the sounds of bullets whizzing by your head. The Teeth chattering feeling you get when a grenade goes off nearby. Total immersion FPS games bring a stage of realism in a world of Virtual Reality. One where normally you are used to a certain amount of immortality transferred via computer, you get the feeling that a slight mistake will splatter your internal organs all over the landscape. It’s the feeling you get from stalking a enemy quietly and slipping a blade into his skull. The Crack of the rifle, as you launch a high velocity round into his body, with pinpoint accuracy from a long ways away. The need for Tactics, beyond the ability to jump and point your BFG-3000 at the same time. Ive always loved Realistic FSP shooters (Rogue Spear, Counterstrike, Etc) for the Realism. Countless games I have played where I leap like a frog from platform to platform, using weapons that can only be born out of the twisted imaginations of a deranged computer programmer, all the while defying gravity and laws of physics in doing so.

These are enjoyable, but nothing beats the feeling of Mortality as you hear the sounds of Heavy Machinegun Fire opening up near your head. The screams of your teammates as they get ambushed. The Rush of Adrenaline as you eliminate your foe, with merely a handgun. The Sounds of sone and sinew being shattered and torn. If its done right, …in the end..you should almost Feel the Blood Cooling on your face as you stand there, victorious, surrounded by the mangled corpses of your enemies……"

Mummu, that statment alone is enough for me to disregard any fps advice you may have to offer, because you obviously don't play them. :) And by your further description of the game, you either never played CS and are taking wild guesses, or you just really sucked at it.

Agreements with lynx, all-around.

well t, i m playing cs since beta 6, so yep i dont play it very long.
do i suck at cs.... depends who u ask, a player who plays in a national team would say i suck, others ( u to? ) would say i cheat :)
k, my aiming in cs isnt the best, cause the bullets dont hit in the middle of the cross:
once i kneeled right in front of a wall with awp 2nd zoom, and shot, the barrel was right pointed to the wall, but the bullet hit the wall around 10 meters to my left, well ok i kneeled at a ladder.
but even if i dont kneel at a ladder the bullet isnt exactly where i wanna have it.

or a scene right from game, u climbing down a ladder, below u an enemy, u take ya xm1014 and put it at his head, that his harir i sIN the barrel, u pull the trigger:
in cs: u miss him, he turn around and kill u with a full burst from his ak.
in real: u have a broken arm but his head is also broken.

so dont say cs is REALISTIC! cause it isnt!
and yeah i know, u cant make a game 100% realistic.

so u want a game that as realistic as possible, pla yarmy ops or flashpoint,
u wanna play something not so realistic play unreal for ever fortress/tournament.
or something partly realistic: day of defeat

Lag, odd graphics glitch but call it what you may...

Ive played CS enough to know that when I point the little crosshair at a target, and pull the trigger, the target gets hit. If im running and jumping around like im in Quake, I dont hit the target.

Mechanics aside, the realism factor is mainly in 2 things.

A) Is the gun a 4 ton glowing weapon that fires pulses of energy< or is it a 9mm Parabelum or a H&K smg? Does it only have 30 rounds capacity? or 400 energy cells? Does it have Ballistic characteristics (deflection, odd spawling or even (gasp) shoot thru capability? Or does it bathe an area in glowing blue flames and casue splash damage on yourself if your not jumping away as you shoot it point blank.

b) Can you get killed in one shot< from a handgun? In the head? Or does it take multiple shots to kill you because of a ub3r glowing immortality Buff you just got from Jump-bouncing up a wall 30 meters and getting the nifty icon thats flashing on the Ledge?

(and C my favorite I like to throw in....)

c) Can you sneak around quietly, killing off people with a single presise shot from a silenced pistol or a thrust from a knife? Or do you risk getting blown away by the guy your trying to sneak up on becasue he shoots you point blank with a Rocket Launcher.....

Realism vs Unrealism.

(and if you have issues like that with CS...try some differnt servers...once in a great while the bullets, like any other real world weapon, spawls, and misses. If your playing CS, and you face a wall..shoot and your bullet kits 10 meters off to one side...maybe dont use a Odd ball CS mod that some Ub3r D00wd made that wasnt well designed...ive seen such things that you are talking about with MODS that some players have hashed together)

No offense Tac.....but why does it seem that you are about the only person who has heard of PLanetside? Untill you mentioned it...Ive never heard of it?? It like Project Entropia?? where 5 people know if its existence??

Guess Ill have to check it out...but repeated praising of a game that hasnt come out sounds allot like the SWG fanatics who keep saying they will dich AO casue its so Crappy and they go on and on and on about how "kewl" it is...even though the game is still in beta...and doesnt work..and is buggy...

Gah...I went on a Rant again. Apologies all around :P

AO is probably the only game where you run around with guns that I can play. First time I jumped into a FPS with other people, they were all jumping around me (I think it was Half-life), and blowing me away. ^_^ It sucked.

Whereas here, You can jump around me all you want, and I'll still getcha.

(Sorry for that little advertisement of that screenshot up there, Ill go back ontopic)

Plus Firia, AO doesnt have some Gimp running around with a Massive Rifle killing people through walls.... wait it pretty much does.

CS is defenatly not the most realistic FPS, ghost recon and OPF beat it there, but it by far the most realistic while retaining fun FPS there is. (Flashpoint is often very aggrivating, when seeing some yahoo in a tank and your stuck with a Rifle, thats not that much fun, ditto Ghost Recon)
As Meta-lynx said about CS's realsim not mainly about one thing, but the atmosphere (Terrorists, guns, hostages, not a Hell Level), and traits of the game like shootable enviroments.

CS sometimes on one server seems like its quake III with HK Mp5s and Steryl Augs, but thats often just the server. It could have lo grav, less recoil settings, or just have players that play it like quake III. But if you find one of the many servers with good players that play it like a realistic sim, then you'll notice how realistic it is.

Real guns and Settings (As Metalynx said), real objectives, real teamwork (Snipers covering the assault teams back, Point-man and so on), and Real tactics.

Unless Im screwing around and running down a hall witha Shotgun, I play it like a close combat Ghost Recon or Flashpoint. Never stop without cover, never reload without cover, and move from cover to cover, just like the real military often does.

Would you rather play CS if it was realism filled to the brim? No jumping, no moving while firing, no crosshairs at all, and when you die, thats it, no playing that server anymore, because thats 100 % realsim, you die... your dead punk.

Try Ghost Recon or Raven Sheild when it comes out if you want more realism, CS is realistic and good enough for most of us. Again sorry for posting the flashpoint Pictures, but if Mummu or anyone else wants too much realism, just try that.
