ROFL

I'm really anal about spelling and grammar. But you can't blame a lot of people. The internet is draining humanity's ability to spell and write properly. We're devolving and one day entire countries will be just like the movie Idiocracy. *sigh*

Jezebelle winces at the obvious pain that poor sentence is in and scores another point for irony.

It's not just the "intarwebs" and txt, although those are certainly doing their part to obfuscate written communication. Misspelling can be trademarked. And it really doesn't help when the trademarked spelling is both shorter and more phonetically reasonable than the official spelling, like "Donuts".

Many companies are also giving up on words all together and using symbols and icons. The fact that our cell phones and keyboards don't have those keys is actually slowing the process of converting entirely to hieroglyphics. Well, except for smilies and emoticons and boobies. Can't forget the boobies.

It irritates me when I realize how much I do it, but in game (AO), on facebook, here on the forums... pretty much everywhere I have my own online presence, I feel like I just don't fit in unless I'm using cyberslang in one way or another. It's not even smilies I'm referring to, but more of the "lol" stuff and the obvious misspellings (like "phail"). It makes me sad that this is how people are expected to communicate with each other online.

I'm staging a protest as of right this very minute. No "lol" or the like, no purposeful misspellings (not even "gonna", and that's my favorite). I'll do this for the entire month of August.

Who wants to join me?

(Sorry I just hijacked your thread, Nasaldrip)

Your Weird Al references will not shake my resolve! But you did make me giggle a little - not quite rolling on the floor laughing, but perhaps laughing out loud... again.

Don't hate the web, hate the insufficient public schooling and enhanced ability for children to pass when they should fail. There is no excuse in the world to have a high school graduate that is illiterate however Jess and I know someone who is just that. Reading is a fundamental part of all learning which is used even in kindergarten, how one can make it through all twelve grades afterward without being able to read leaves me completely befuddled.

I do this all year, every year, unless I'm being sarcastic. So I think I'm safe. I've stood on this proud mountain since "lol" and "roflmao" were incepted. Hence my more common use of "lawl" because it better describes the pronounciation of such a silly thing. Go, go, Sprkly! You can do it!!!

Onimonipia... yo.
Your confusion is confusing me.

well as much as I respect proper grammer and good spelling I hated, HATED my english teachers, despised reading out loud, and would've rather died than did any kind of public speaking. I do ask forgiveness for my lack of proper spelling it was never something neither well taught to me or very well learned, I was a basketball star so I got a curve (was awesome at the time regret it now). though oddly enough I lost 3 academic scholorships when i quit high school in my junior year and scored in the top 10 highest scores ever when i took my GED. though the years ive just had no need for properness being either a rough neck or a carpenter so ive become lazy (hint the lack of capitalization) :P

My 2 cents:

I don't use "lol", "lmao", or any of their like cousins.

Do I use other chat speak? Yep. Will I continue to do so? Yep. Although I don't use near as much as a lot of people do. I still have my favorites that I will continue to use when appropriate. I don't really see the need for sticking to formal rules in an informal setting. *shrugs*

the only thing that gets me more than a client (who admittedly is not from the states) who can't spell literacy, is a admissions councilor that can't read and comprehend our reports.

Oh and Spell checkers FTW. I have one on Firefox so should you. :)

The one thing I've noticed about cyberspeak: I've only ever used it in a crowd of other cyberspeakers. I usually pride myself in using proper grammar and punctuation when speaking to my friends on the internet, but I'm more inclined to use abbreviations in online games and places where others use them as well. It seems to follow a usual pattern of language for me: when in England, speak english; in Italy, speak italian and when you want to swear a lot, speak french. You can say the most dirtiest thing ever and still make it sound romantic... true story. 8)
