GSP Gone Country - The Aftermath

Postby Phaetonix » Sat Aug 21, 2010 11:36 pm

So! What did you all think? Did you enjoy it? Where you scared, surprised or worried? Would you like to see more of these all-day-one-genre events? If so, which genres?

Anything constructive you wish to share would be wonderful and appreciated!

I enjoyed the day hugely.

Dedicating a day to one genre of music and then playing the best of it. Like the DJs did today. Was great!

Please do it again.

I liked it. Country's not really my favorite, but I love variety, and there were a number of songs in there I really do like. Genre days could be cool. There are plenty of genres out there that don't normally get played much. Cultures, too. I always like hearing stuff from elsewhere. If a whole day of Tuvan Throat Singing is too much, and I'm pretty sure it would be, maybe some scattered segments of different stuff, like that country and latin segment Joan did last week. Maybe days for big genres like Country or Jazz and segments for smaller or rarer niches like Indian or genres people aren't likely to tolerate for a whole day, like J-pop?

I'm not a big country fan myself but it was still a fun to hear all of it today. I thinks its a great idea to set aside a day a month and dedicate it to just one genre of music.

GSP Goes Country Feedback

Postby Joanwilder » Mon Aug 23, 2010 9:04 pm

Thank you Phae for including me on this event, I had a blast. Would love to do this once a month with different genre's so keep me posted. I think it was a success, I even had a couple people in tells saying they didn't normally like country, but liked a certain song. So yeah WAY cool!

I got to hear some of it, and I think a genre day is a great way to expose dj's and listeners alike to things they wouldn't normally hear/listen to. Not everything will be everyone's cup of tea and that's ok, its the discovery that's worth it.

And that right there sums up one of the main reasons why I love GSP so very much.

Hear hear!

This was just discussed a bit at the super extra long Sprkle Party and some of the suggested genres were classical, jazz, folk, goth industrial, J-pop, K-pop, and heavy metal. Maybe we need a thread for genre suggestions (preferably including links to examples, like the request threads) and a private thread for the DJs to discuss who has enough of what to be able to pull off a whole show in that genre. Some of them will obviously take more preparation than others. Then when enough shows in that genre can be lined up and a Saturday is coming up with no scheduled event, you can schedule that for a genre day? Or maybe on a weekday if the regular show(s) for that day are ready for that genre and enough others can join in?

The scheduling sounds complicated, but I guess the logistics are up to you guys anyway. Figuring out a way to arrange this as a semi-regular feature seems to generally be considered a good idea. I'd be happy to help with suggestions and research on genres I'm familiar with, as I'm sure other listeners would be.

What was suggested in our DJ discussion, is that this could possibly be held on the same numerical day every month. This way its not always on the same day of the week, so we have the possibility of incorporating all of our DJ staff over time. It would likely only be once a month, and a new genre every month. How we'll be choosing the genre hasn't been decided yet, but I've got an idea, and someone will let you guys all know more once we do some more work on this :D This is very likely to become a regular event, hopefully soon :)

Thanks for all the great feedback so far!
