Free music/support our artists!

Postby Gridfan » Fri Mar 30, 2007 9:18 pm

I'm starting this as it's a worthy cause, there will be two lists.
If anyone has more sites post here and I'll update the lists in the first post.

Please! Only legal/official sites, where the artists either gives out the music free (1st list) or let you buy the music directly from them (2nd list) cheaply I hope, rather than the labels sucking us dry!

(Signed and touring) musician friend of mine just put a link up to this, as his band is just trying it out for the first time:

http://songslide.com/About.aspx

Looks kind of interesting - you pick how much you want to pay for an album, or a track - but to encourage you to pay more, the ~percentage~ of the overall price that goes to the artist actually goes up. So people are encouraged to pay as much as they think is right. There's a visual sliding display that lets you see exactly how much of what you are paying is going to the artist - hence the name song slide.

Looks like so far it's a lot of world music and folk and acid jazz and the like, but there's indutrial and experimental rock and stuff creeping in, so could be worth keeping an eye on...

Mostly Instrumental Music (Harp) but he is fairly local to me Bronn Journey is the artists Name and his wife does Vocals for some of his work. If you like Harp Music with a decidedly Celtic / Scandinavian focus then his site might just be worth a look.

http://phileomusic.com/index.html

not free, but he produces his own CD's and DvD's and the prices are reasonable

Many moons ago I was played bass for a group called Carmilla's Dress. It was gothy type stuff and, over the years, I wore a variety of hats in the group. At the time of our last recording, I was doing bass and some drum programming. But, I happened to find a smattering of mp3s from that period (when we were leaning in a much more goth rock sound), which can be found at http://home.att.net/~metamer/CD/

Love this band, and they give out several tracks from each album for free on the website, plus it only costs $45 to unlock the vault and download them all. They sell all their own music themselves, kinda nice to buy a CD and know I'm not supporting the RIAA :)

http://www.freeindie.com/

A very intersting site I came across, check out their large and very practical category menu on the right hand side.
At first glance it looks like many of those categories fit under several of our DJ's, so don't be surprised if you hear some of the stuff from that site on the air.
And if not, nag your favorite DJ's to do so, we are after all your obedient slaves. (the whole of GSP starts laughing their asses off :P)

Anyway, check it out, listen, request it and support the artists you like.
Now, maybe I should actually check out these artists myself now...hmm now there's an idea...

Might want to add Nine Inch Nails to the list;

http://nin.com/

Just in case people are not aware that Trent Reznor is releasing stuff under Create Commons Attribution-Noncommercial Share Alike license now :D

The latest album, The Slip, was released on Monday, and can be downloaded in several differnt formats, ranging from MP3 to 24bit, 96KHz WAVE!

There is also the Remix section of the NiN site, which lets you remix quite a large selection of their tracks.

I don't have an embeded player for my music that I host on my site but people may preview the music via my youtube account or my myspace artist page I am currently giving away 4-5 songs as free downloads. You can also download the .rar file I have placed a link here to the mediafire.com page where u can download 4 songs for free!

Mediafire link: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?jqj22agmyzm#

My site:
http://www.djkei.webs.com/

Youtube channel:
http://www.youtube.com/user/djkei58

I haven't posted the songs on the site or youtube yet so please give me time, they will be there in the next week.

Also, I make Techno/Trance music and I was wondering if I could send some to GSP and possibly have them played on the air(if liked)?

P.S. All music is my own creations. Thus the only copyright infringement is if those who downloaded my music were to claim it as their own works.

Your best bet would be to send a private message to one of our DJ's that plays that genre of music and work out how they could get a few of your songs. They could then make it available to other DJ's who might be interested in playing it. :)

Thanks Ashval and Gridfan I appreciate the replies and I will check out the fore mentioned sites. Also if you could help suggest a DJ to send the music to that would be extremely helpful seeing as you guys are pretty random right Ashval? lol

For techno/trance? I'd try Dynamiks, Screaminlord, Synnthetik or Aakasha. Lauri, Tarryk or Narcotic will play some of it as well.

Free Metal! (Demos and Promo-Compilations)

http://rockassdick.blogspot.com/search/label/FD

I post the blogspot-url because all of those artists I found on their individual websites are represented here, too, plus some others. I tell you that because I was told that those blogspots are often sources for illegal downloads, which these are apparently not. I found the site looking for the Kurwen Demo, which a Spanish friend suggested to me. I looked up some of the downloads on their homepages (being suspicious) and those I checked were OK.
That said - Have fun ;)

Edit: I checked 90% of the Downloads and it's OK (just to make sure ;) ). Some I couldn't even find with (quick) Google search...

Negativity (also on the blog) have also released a second full album for free on their site, which is not included in the blog:
http://www.negativity.cjb.net/

Edit 2:
On http://www.freemindrecords.com.br/index_en.htm you can find the three free samplers from the blog, plus a virtual store with some promo offers and such. Just thought of the "support our artists" thing :P
