Need Reviews on the iTouch

Postby Innari » Tue Feb 17, 2009 2:02 am

Does anyone have an iTouch?

I can read reviews until my eyes turn bloodshot... but I'd rather get reviews from some of the folks I *know*. Something about trust or some such...

So if you have an iTouch... please chime in on the pros and cons of getting one...

I actually have the money to get a decent something for myself with my tax return... and I've decided to either get an iPod classic... or an iTouch... just need to figure out which one.

So GSP and fans... please help :P

Can't help, as I don't have an iTouch, or an iPod, or anything similar by Apple. I have however heard good reviews from my friends here in Florida that have iTouches (iTouch's??) lol

What's the point of getting an mp3 player when most cell phones in the same price range offer the same features, and more? I would say skip the mp3 player and get a new phone, plus phones are upgradeable in the memory area, whereas itouch's are not I believe?

Reasons why not to upgrade my phone:

1. I'm locked into a contract on my phone for another 18 months, meaning I would have to pay full price for a phone. When a phone better than mine, would cost me $400-500.

2. My phone is a phone. I try not to combine technology as I want my mp3 player for places I don't have my phone... as in, next to my head in bed...with head phones on. Or in my car with a radio tuner, so it actually plays over my stereo.

3. The sound quality on my phone is shite.

4. Battery life. 30+ hours on the iTouch... vs. 15 on my phone... The battery life on my Blackberry style Motorola is not all that great. But it is a fantastic phone. Hence why I got it.

But the #2 reason is the primary reason for it. I don't want my phone attached to my ear at night. I really don't. I need something to listen to at night, and not bother my sleepmates.

I don't know about the iTouch, but I recently acquired an iPhone through some help at work (and even at full price, the 8 gig is only $200 now), and I freakin' love it. Much as I didn't want to have to install iTunes on my PC, I'm not regretting it, since I only ever have to run it when I'm updating the phone itself, and it's about as stupid-friendly as a hand-held anything can be. ;)

If the iTouch is anything at all like the iPhone, it definitely gets a thumbs up from me.

Yes like TK says I also have an iPhone too
And the amount of stuff that you can do on the iphone and itouch is just incredable

I will tell you though that my friends who have an itouch are jealous of my iphone :)

But I am a huge fan of only having to cary one thing with me and having games music my phone the internet and text anywhere I go its great

The itouch you can only conect to places where there is a wi-fi conection
But as you said you dont like to mix your stuff then I dont see you careing about not being able to DL something in walmart hehe

Dani,

I have an iTouch, sometimes I wish I had the iPhone for connectivity issues, but all in all I love the iTouch.

Review.

Any piece of technology that contributes to Americas ongoing inability to pay attention is evil. Ultimately portable MP3 players serve to make drivers drive worse. Pedestrians pay less attention and the music industry produce insipid boy bands with no talent. Wait of thats last one isn't the technologies fault.

First I'm sorry for derailing your thread, Dani, but...

Fishi - Are you purporting that this is strictly an American issue? Seriously? MP3 players and cell phones are not used in any other part of the world? Is that your contention? Or are you mearly contending that we're the only ones distracted by technology?

Oh and BTW, my computer is probably my biggest distraction. Not only does it distract me, but I get distracted from my distractions by other distractions on the same damn box. So by your logic, that makes it evil. If so, why do you use one? Oh wait...because you're Canadian such distractions don't affect you. Riiiiight.

As I am writing to a primarily American audiance I used terms that would be comfortable for that audiance. I in no means meant to imply that only Americans are dumb enough to purposely distract themselves before walking into traffic. It definately happens in Canada and every other nation I'm aware of. Perhaps I shouldn't argue against such actions and just consider it a contribution to Darwin. Stupid people removing themselves from the gene pool... A group that nobody reading this belongs to since your all hopefully still alive. That is assuming that zombies and Vampires don't exist.

Oh shoot now I've gone and offended the stupid people, zombies and vampires.

Canada isn't the center of the universe and definately has more than enough stupidity. After all take our Prime Minister. No please take him we don't want him. Really I mean it no refunds.

Oh yes your also welcome to keep Celine Dion.

Warning the sense of humor you have been exposed to is warped. If you feel in any way put out by this sense of humor please kindly accept my most profound apology. This is a late breaking disclamer.

Disclamer to the disclamer. Please excuse the preceeding disclamer. Theres no particular reason it needs to be excused really but one must be cognizant of the ability of rabid ground squirrels to get drunk off fermenting nuts.

Disclamer to the disclamers disclamer. The management would like to appologise for the disclamer to the disclamer and all further disclamers as they are a running gag and make no real sense. The inability of the disclamer to the disclamer to take itself seriously is attributed to the inability of said management to take anything seriously. That or being dropped on the head to many times as a child.

Valli,

Just so you know, you've no need to apologize for derailing my thread. You weren't the perpetrator.

Fishi,

Pick a new thread to hijack and a new place to share your opinions, as I've about had it with your constantly negative and badgering attitude. This was *no* place to start a bitch fest about electronics. It is not what was asked for in this thread, and it's not appreciated.

Cry,

Question: Which size iTouch do you have? Do you feel you have enough space? What are you using for apps on it?

I can chip in on this if you don't mind. My 16 gig iTouch is more than enough for my needs. I loaded it up with my ENTIRE music folder and I am only using up roughly 33% of the overall space on it.

Apps where the real deal breaker for me on picking up my Touch. This thing is essentially an iPhone without the ability to call people. Using the WiFi is easy and SO many places have WiFi hotspots now, so most of the time you can use the web browser or other online components. The battery life is simply amazing, too! Well over 30 hours of constant music and it is still going strong!

Some people complain about the sound quality. However, with a pair of noise canceling headphones(Skullcandy, rather cheap and they work well) I have no complaints. Also, some comment on how easy it is to scratch and smudge. I Personally picked up a leather hip case and even through heavy use it is spotless. The smudging issue is solved with the cleaning cloth that comes with the product, too.

Overall the iTouch is one of the best purchases I have ever invested in. New apps are commonly coming out, it does its job very well, and has more utility than any other MP3 player. Personally, I would recommend the product to anyone looking for more than just playing music.

Currently, I have the following apps:
Factory default apps:
Safari (Web browser)
Calender
Mail (Currently linked to my Gmail account)
Contacts (Standard contact book for phone numbers and such)
Clock (Includes a stopwatch, world clocks, timer, and alarm)
Calculator (Only basic mathematical operations)
Stocks (Never used, but it tracks stocks)
Weather (Tracks the weather, obviously.)
Maps (Touch screen access to Google Maps)
Youtube (Watch Youtube videos and such)
Notes (iTouch sticky notes!)

Free downloaded apps:
GraphCalc (Basic graphing calculator)
Facebook (Full access to the Facebook service)
Twitterrific (Cool little Twitter app)
AIM (AIM for the iTouch. Nothing else to say about this one)
Pandora (Streaming access to Pandora if on a WiFi network)
DrinksFree (The free version of what I like to call my "Pocket Bartender" Every drink you can think of and how to make 'em in an app.)
iHandy Level (Carpenters level, fun to mess with)
Flixster (New movie releases, reviews, and trailers for both DvD and the theater)
Google Earth (Touch interface for using Google Earth.)
Ubanspoon (A MUST! Shake it up and it'll tell you where to eat. Perfect for those "where should we go tonight?" moments.)
Whiteboard (Touch screen doodle pad.)
iChess (Chess, it explains itself.)
Sudoku (Again, it explains itself.)
Tap Tap Revenge (Rhythm tapping game. "Guitar Hero" or DDR style.)

Paid Apps - They range from 99 cents to 10 bucks:
Super Monkey Ball (Fun little game ported to the touch)
Dicenomicon - (Dice roller for tabletop and pen 'n paper games.)
Grocery IQ ( Grocery list on steroids. I love this thing as a college student)

Pardon the wall of text and hopefully this helps!

Thanks Evi!!! Super helpful!! Thanks! Though, my entire music folder... wouldn't fit on a classic 120g iPod ... but I don't intend to carry the whole thing around :P

I have the 16gig iTouch.

I really don't have that many Apps on it yet, as for music I maybe have 2 gigs worth on it, but I have nowhere near the amount of music some of you guys have so its good. I like the toys anyway, and I may end up getting an iPhone, anyway, because they are getting cheap and I need to upgrade my phone soon.

Thanks Evi and Cry.

I went out and bought a 32gb iTouch on Friday. And so far, absofreakin' lutely love it.

It's touch response is *much better* than the Blackberry Storm, at least for me.

My only problem right now... is trying to weedle down what I want on it for music. :P I have 110gb of music (long story about getting my music drive up and running...) and no idea what I want on it :P I keep going "oh that song! and that one and that one...that one too!"

I picked up the Checkbook App, to keep a running register of my bank account, which I think is a fab thing for a mother of 1. :P

Anywho, Thanks guys!
