New Amsterdam

"New Amsterdam" is a new FOX show that's already doomed to early cancellation in the tradition of FOX shifting time slots all over the place. For that reason and the fact that a coworker just told me how awesome it is, I'm going to have to check it out. Has anyone seen it?

Apparently about a New York detective who happens to be 400 years old and immortal. Sounds like a more modernized Highlander, and I can't think of how they could make that work and stay interesting, but the established stigma of FOX killing great sci-fi shows before they get started already has me interested. ;)

The commercials for it looked great but I've been hesitant to give it a shot for just the reasons you mentioned. I don't want to love it only to have it yanked away by TIIC at Fox.

I have seen the show from the beginning; not as like Highlander as you might think :) .

It is an interesting program from a dramatic standpoint and 400 yrs can give a person a powerful pool of 'experience' to draw on.

Frankly, while it strikes me as a program possibly worth watching while it lasts, it does not strike me as a program that would have more than two seasons in it even with the best network.

Yeah, I fully expect it won't last a season from what I hear FOX is doing to the air-times, but the concept seems weak enough that it wouldn't go very long anyway, especially since it's not based off anything popular. I'm working late tonight, I might try to queue it up on the FOX site and see if I can split-window the pilot and my database.

Yes I know the network watch-sites, thank you. :)

Pilot's pretty good, second episode's a little better, this show's definitely got promise. No award wins, but definitely not boring. Very smart dialogue.

All caught up on the eps now, and I must say I'm seriously impressed. I'm really surprised at how "down to earth" it was, considering the overhead story arc. It kind of poses the question in each episode "how good would a cop be with 400 years experience under his belt?" Answer: that good. Hehe.

Hmmm sounds a bit like moonlight to me. Which is about a private investigator who got turned into a vampire quite some time ago. Think he is more like 90 or something though not 400 heh.
You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it.

Yeah, seems they got inspired by Moonlight (or possible the "original" immortal detective series Forever Knight that Moonlight is based on).

The interesting thing is that they are not (so far) playing the "immortal" card that much, they seem to enjoy the "old fart who's seen/done everything" instead. Maybe some inspiration from The Man From Earth as well (great movie)

My advice, enjoy this while it lasts. I'm hoping for at least a couple seasons.
But damn, US TV network exec piss me off, this Nielsen rating masturbation they got going is just not logical any more. Those Nielsen families must be really freakin' weird. How can so many good series not be popular enough?

But in any case. New Amsterdam is a pretty good series indeed.

significant difference between New Amsterdam and Highlander, Moonlight, Forever Knight, Hell even Blood Ties. ------- He is not a supernatural creature. He is not 'by nature' immortal as with Highlander. He is not a Vampire as in the others. He is under a blessing/curse to live until he manages to find and wed the person who is his "Soul's Mate".

The series actually does a decent job of covering both the search, and his job as a detective.
