Looks like an armored engineering vehicle/APC of some kind. The latticework around it is to protect against RPG's (Rocket Propelled Grenades), and unless I'm wrong, the sucker can withstand driving over a landmine without injury to the passengers. Of course, you'll have wheel/drivetrain-parts all over, but hey, that's better than bodyparts. The arm/crane can most likely be operated from within the vehicle, plus that the vehicle (including windows) is armored against small-arms fire.

...i have an unhealthy interest in military hardware and the tech behind it...

I read that IEDs* are the landmine of choice in this region. :? Their placement (I read) seems to target people in vehicals. I imagine something like this would be designed to combat those devices. :)

*IED; Improvised Explosive Device. I read that IEDs are designed to discharge bits of superheated shrapnel that tear through hummers and armored vehicals to lodge themselves in the people inside. Tis what I've read anyway. I'm no expert.

Might be, since the arm has good reach and the vehicle is armored enough to withstand being near a detonation (notice how the armor is slanted underneath, leading the blast away from the occupants although taking most of the drivetrain with it). IED's are horribly simple to make, and easy to conceal. A dedicated vehicle to fight them would be a good thing.

Thanks =) Learned something new there, which is always a good thing ^^

Just to utterly derail this thread for just a tad longer, but isn't one of the Decepticons from the Transformers-move this vehicle (or something like it)?

Understandable, Jeni. Some of them have been large enough to take out an M1A2 Main Battle Tank, so I can fully understand.
