Why did I have to born in Finland!?
I wish that I could come to D*Con, but me being broke isn't helping me at all. But fortunately I am coming to D*Con in 2009 (and with my luck there's no D*Con in 09 :D).

Well... I'll see you there in about two years then (who's going to miss an axe wielding drunken finn anyway?) :D

I'd really like to try to get somewhere like this:
http://atlanta.citysearch.com/profile/2 ... lie_s.html
while we're there. Maybe on the Thursday night, seeing as how there's no barbeque, and because not matter how good the intentions it's so hard to leave the hotels once the convention is in full swing.

Anyone up for an adventure?

An adventure through the streets of downtown Atlanta on a weekend where the cops are going to have their hands full.

You MUST be from a different country. :P

Heehee, cheap shot, there. Still, count me out. I've had my fill of slummy downtown areas, plenty of those in Lansing & Detroit. I'm going for the big-ass hotels and the kickass parties. No need to roam the streets for that. :)

The issue I see with doing something like this is the traveling to and from part. This place is 3 miles from the hotel, so we need a vehicle of some form and someone sober enough to drive it (and get us home again). Hate to go all "mom" on this, but you get to be 40 and you learn some lessons along the way. Also, I think Tarryk brings up a good point. So I don't imagine you can count me in on this one either. This whole weekend is already an adventure for me. Heading off is either a sure fire recipe for some excellent memories or a sure fire recipe for disaster. I'm too much of a wuss to take my chances. Not without assurances at least. :)

I just really don't want to wind up downtown explaining who started it on my vacation. The street walkers just LOVE harassing the pedestrians during con weekend.

See, I was thinking it would be simple and cheap enough to jump in a taxi there and back, that's what I do in most strange cities.

Would I be right in assuming from this that taxis in the US are either a lot more expensive, or few and far between, especially when you need them at the end of the night?

Well I do not use Taxi's much except when I go to Vegas, and since I now know Vegas quite well I have also learned that the Taxi drivers there if they think you have no idea where you are going will drive you the longest route to up the meters, so ummm I do not trust the Taxi drivers in the U.S at all. It cost me the same amount to go in a limo as in a taxi if I go with 4people so what the hell Ill take the Limo yep yep and if you have a good hotel in Vegas they supply the Limo Free yep yep yep It pays to ask questions for sure. Oh and Tarryk just in case you do get a cnace for a signature take your Firefly DvD for a sig. wont take upa smuch room as the hat and lots cooler

Actually, you can likely dismiss most of my paranoia. Transportation seems to be a lot better in ATL than in Michigan. Expect to shell out a little money, but you can call for a cab from the hotel, yeah.

Cool. I shall do some investigating :)

Of course, considering I only managed to do about 1% of what I planned to beforehand last Dragoncon there is still every possibility that this is never going to happen... but I've never been much of a stay-in-the-resort type and do have a history of going out to find random excitement in strange places.

But that said, I do also have a very strong aversion to being beaten up or arrested - or worse - so I do try to avoid anything that comes with a large likelihood of that occuring ;)

dependong on how things are that thursday night, if we get a taxi, ill probably want to go to that bluws bar, i really LOVE blues bars, and if we get a taxi from the hotel, i doubt we will have any problems. I will say ill play it by ear and if the cards drop right count me into that little adventure.

If our Explorer makes it to Atlanta, we might be able to provide taxi services (Stiofain is willing to give people lifts if the car's in satisfactory condition). Just a few more "ifs" and "maybes" to add to the equation/lay on the table. :)

Chai, there are several blues bars in the area and some of them actually have better menus than Blind Willie's.

I was bored at work and looked some up today. Blind Willie's has like a limited selection of everything, including food and beer.

It was the one on a quick search that looked to have the best actual live blues... some of the others looked more like a blues-themed normal bar than a blues bar if you know what I mean.

I shall poke the internets more and see what they tell me...

I think Lyk and I might try to get to Blind Willies on Wednesday night... that way if it's amazing and definitely shouldn't be missed we can let people know, and if it's just so-so then we can let people know that too and save anyone trecking out there for no good reason.

I am not entirely sure, but I think that may be a plan.

That sounds like a plan. ;) I know a lot of folks don't have a lot of extra funds, and it's a heckuva lot cheaper to drink at the hotel than at a bar. I might be interested if you guys recommend it, but it'd depend how many others would be up for it.
I may be retired, but I'm GridStream for life.

If you're looking at traveling around town in Atlanta, you can also take the Marta. The public transportation in Atlanta will take you anywhere you want to go, and it's cheap.
