Back from the past!

Postby Desmonia » Thu Mar 29, 2007 4:09 pm

I'm not sure of the actual date, it was around the time that Dark Age of Camelot had just been released. A friend who played the game with me, and also a sci-fi gamer asked "what about Anarchy Online, it's supposed to be a very cool game". I responded that I couldn't get it to load much less play it. He suggested I go to the Funcom Tech support. Being a lazy person at heart and resigned to things when they don't work, I resisted even attempting to fix the problem. It didn't seem important enough. It's like a person who had never had a really good steak haveing a craving for one! My friend nagged me to the point of distraction and I dragged my mouse to click on the link and off I went. Not being technical in anyway, <the computer has a "on" switch, that's all I need to know> I started reading the tech forums and what did I discover? My firewall didn't like Funcom and this is what to do. If I recall there were like 3 steps and I discovered that allot of my log in problems at Dark Age of Camelot were fixed as well :)

I started to play and enjoy, then someone said "hey, are you on winamp"? I said, "Winamp, what's that"? I then found out about Gridstream Productions, and the shout cast and how real people had added something so special to the game. The parties, and contests the social part of the game. It brought such pleasure that sometimes all I did was log on rush over to Reets or sneak into Omni Entertainment and hang out at Rhompas!

And then darkness fell, I transferred in my job and landed so far in the middle of no where that even getting a decent dial-up connection was nearly impossable :( A second mishap resulted in a HD failure and the resultant loss of my AO Client. So staring at a "time left" counter of weeks to download the client with all the updates I just hung my head and closed my accounts.

I am still in the middle of no where, but I have a satalite connection now and while I am not at the blistering speed of cable or even DSL I can easily out match a dial-up and actually do large downloads :)

The thoughts of the game tickled my memory, but the thing that made me what to come back the most was the music, and all the fun going to the parties and events set up by Gridstream Productions! DJ Tarryk and Veldrin would be real again, Tasty Vixen and all the rest. The GSP dancers, the fun of making the dance scrips again. It would all be real again for me :)

It took 24 hours to do "The Lost Edan" client download. It started out at 179 kb/s and a time to download of 5 hours. I set it going and went to sleep. Upon waking up with great anticipation I turn my monitor on only to discover 1.8 kb/s and 440 hours to complete! The time to complete bounced around allot and the avg time to complete was 72 hours, still a incredable amount of time. In case some of you don't know, most wireless ISP systems ascribe to what is called "Fair Access Policy" or FAP! What that means is, if you try to download more than 350 MB < in the case of my provider> you're band width is cut to almost nothing for a period of 12 hours. I put in on pause a few times and eventually the speed picked up and I was able to complete, as I said, in 24 hours!

My character name is phonetic spelling of my forum name, since my name was taken :( I've use this name in 3 other games and it shocked me to see it was taken :( My in game name is "Desmonaya" it's pronounced exactly as it appears - Dez - mo - nay - ya :)

I've started a new character and she is a level 10 Doctor for the clan. I am in West Athens, I think thats the area. There is a little quiet place there called "The Cup"! I have to relearn the game and if anyone wants to give a hand I'd certainly enjoy the company:)

See you at the next show :)

Welcome back, Des! I'll keep an eye out for you in game. ;) Are you on RK1 or RK2 with your play characters so far? I say "so far" because you'll eventually be on both for GSP shows. 8)

Also, what part of your name you do accent? Dez-MO-nay-ya or Dez-mo-NAY-ya?

Hi Traanse 8)

I am on RK1 <Atlantian> and currently in West Athens?

I was looking at all the threads for the different DJs and thought to make a list of of who, when and WHERE, but there seems to be to no referance to "where" :(

I presume you don't broadcast in Omni terrirtory and stay mostly in the Nuetral Zone < um is that a Romulan Battle Cruiser parked out front>?

I know Reets with the Fireplace Room, the Cafe, the "Box" room and of course the "Glass Dance Floor". Then there is that out of the way little place in Newland somewhere near or around the whoompah. There is that place in the woods outside Omni Entertainment, the one with the laser light show. Also there is a bar in a PvP zone, Hope or New Hope? It was a small dingy place with bullet holes in the walls and it was very common to see Omni and Clan shoot it out while other people were dancing

Oh, and the Primary sound in my name is DEZ mo nay ya!

My freinds just call me Dez 8)
