WoWBG: The version I can tolerate ;)

Couple pictures of my last session of WoWBG (World of Warcraft: Board Game).

While I may not hold the highest regard for the MMO, this board game absolutely rocks. Hours of fun, and TONS of content, I've played three times now and I haven't even seen a fraction of the events & quests in it.

Dang that looks awesome and like you may need one hell of a big table to play on as well, are all those pieces included in one game or is that like every one has thier own deck of cards and pieces of play, and geeebeejuss how thick is the instruction manual,I love board games and puzzles as well and that sort of looks like both in one.

I have been wanting to try this game out ever since I saw the cards come in at work, but I don't know anyone who plays in my area. It looks like its tons of fun, gonna have to hunt people down to play now, or I could work on those hyper jets for my Jeep, -nods- hehe .

Answer to Jugsy is that it's all in one box, everything you see on the table (except for the drinks, the novel, and the chit cups) comes in the box. As for the instructions, they're actually quite thin, maybe 30 pages of large-print instructions. The actual gameplay isn't complicated at all, but there's so much content (quests, characters, powers, weapons, etc) that it can seem overwhelming at times.

All in all, the game is definitely worth it's retail $75-$80 range, except maybe for the board itself. It's a standard classic-monopoly-esque fold-out board, and I don't like those, they're too flimsy and tear easily. I've been trying to devise a way to preserve mine and make it more sturdy without destroying it.

The pieces are hard plastic, and they're pretty well-made, save for the standard mega-bending of anything thin (all staffs look like snakes, all swords bent up to 45 degrees, etc). They could use a paint-job, of course. I'm still enlisting for that, haha.

As an old board gamer from way way back in the 70's and 80's, I know how you feel about the way boards fold!!

An item we used to use for EVERY game was a bloody great sheet of clear perspex (acryllic) to cover the board - you never know when things might spill!! (also really handy for stacking counters on folds)

It was also an unwritten rule that only the game owner would ever fold or unfold the board


Now talking of large board games... A few friends and I did actually have a go at playing the full "Scorched Earth" series all stacked together... A WWII board game of the German Russian front where each hex was only a few miles - the boards themselves covered a full table tennis table... each side had many thousands of 1/2" square counters to deploy and use... The game took a solid week just to set up, then we would take a full day for one side to take one turn!! I recall not being part of the team till the very end, but I did play each sunday for over 6 months! Ahh, the days before home PC's

I didn't draw the connection to RISK, hehe...

The board is basically a sectioned-off (but totally accurate, I'm told) map of the unexpanded WoW MMO world.

And yeah, the WoW:CCG is it's own game, like Magic:tG, not related to this one.

Looks sort of like an overcomplicated Talisman (which itself was a bit fluff-heavy, despite the more simplistic track board)

Fantasy Flight seem to be putting most of their effort into these sort of overproduced Big Frikken Box boardgames lately. WoW, Doom, Descent, the grand-daddy of them all; Twilight Imperium, etc.

I do however look forward to their Starcraft release, and the new mechanics hinted at in it (layering of transparent cards for comparison instead of dice for combat, etc)
