Postby Narcotic » Thu Dec 28, 2006 2:26 am

Been talking to several ppl and finding out that they are playing, so thought i'd start a thread so we can discuss it.

I have a 48 NE hunter on Emerald Dreams(RP/PvP).

Anyone looking forward to the Burning Crusade?

As for BC can't wait, after my latest experience over here in AO, i'm even starting to get shaky with my faith in AoC, so WoW may become the primary game for me, since even now AO is more just a social place to hang out rather than playing the game.

I used to play WoW, had a lvl 50 undead rogue on the Mal'Ganis server, but due to some heavy RL issues, I've deleted the characters, sold everything to the vendor, and have given the gold away.

*looks sheepish* yeah been playing it a fair bit recently due to a bizarre set of cicumstances... namely my main character being close to dinging 220 on AO... dodgy net connection meaning I'm not too reliable for teaming... however my net connection gets sorted tomorrows :D and then I'll be a shifting ya cores!

*Oh and any rumours regarding the naming of my main characters pet bear as Tarryk are completely untrue... ooh look a squirrel *runs**

my cousin is wanting me to start up in WoW, for some strange reason I have WoW pegged as some sort of a elves vs orges mass pvp game full of 14yr old kids fighting guys living at home with their mothers for domination of one of 1,000 servers so that they are the only source for the E-Bayed goods on the server and all the kids have to shell out the $300.00 worth of exploited gold pieces to buy some uber rare necklace that gives that elusive +2 to stamina...

'RP' did I see those two letters used in a conversation about WoW? Certainly RP in this case stands for something like 'Rabid Player', 'Rapid Participation' or something else dealing with a nickname of a PVP style, because anyone that I have met that plays WoW talks about nothing but killing other people.

The reasons that I am not interested in WoW is as follows...
1. all I hear is PVP, if roleplay is present please tell me on what server and some guild websites to look 'em up please.
2. Its a fantasy game that again seems like nothing but a trendy mindless fragfest.
3. its just good vs evil, red team vs blue team, Player1 vs Player2... this goes back to the idea that I have WoW just being about PvP I havent seen a shred of story to the game other than setting. Sonic the Hedgehog has a setting, but that does not make it a RPG, am I right? My cousin has been playing WoW for the past two and a half years (3 possibly?) and still has no clue on any sort of stroy involved.
4. Its flying high, very high right now and the thing has got to run outta fuel somepoint. I get concerned playing a game that relies on advertising the number of players inorder to keep going. Peer pressure anyone? 'All your friends play, so why dont you!?' Hell, southpark did an episode about it... WoW is a cultural pop icon, like MC Hammer, or *cough* the dreamcast console :P

I might be interested in changing my opinion if anyone can help prove this myth of roleplay in Worlds of Warcraft.

there is a story. but based on things that i saw in game or read on the forums, not much is done by the players to progress that story. I stopped playing quite some time ago. The game is too simple for me, and after a few weeks of play the novilty of the game wears off and I am left wanting something more. As far as mechanics go, not too bad. The skill system is sort of lacking, but retains that UO style of, if you wanna get good at something, do it. The people I met in the game are very nice, and would make a great addition to the AO community...just my attempts to get them over never succeded. But yes, the game is very pvp oriented, but not so much more so then AO. The game just has a lot more people who participate in it. And as far as the pvp goes, it is a lot more balanced then things are in AO. From what I could gather there is no real god pvp profession.

Anyway that's just my 2 cents. The best thing to do really is try the game if they are still doing that free week or whatever.

Role play is around, and ususally done by the adult croud in WoW. I have personally found it is much more prevalent on the Alliance side rather than Horde. Most things I have been involved with are all player run stories/situations (which I tend to favor anyways). Getting into the scene is a bit difficult I find as many RP'er shelter themselves out from "them", but once you do get to meet some people (I find Goldshire to be the best), its some damn fun times.

WoW like any other pop culture phenom does get stereotyped, the reason all you here is about the 14 year olds and pvp is because they are the ones with the loudest mouths, so that is the image they are giving to the outside world. For me that was a big turn off as well, however, once inside the game its completely different. A lot of time will be spent with your own guild, and other than the occasional few lines or so in the BG's you don't deal with the idiots much at all. Also definately pick an RP or RPPVP server .. that alone weeds out a lot of the youngin (straight up RP more than the RPPvP). WoW does have a download with a free 10day trial, doesn't hurt to at least give it a shot, see if any of your AO RP buddies also play along in WoW ... I was surprised how many AO people i knew over there ((even now everyone I associated and RP/PVP'd with in AO are now in WoW with me ... so the best part i loved about AO is now with me in WoW)).

Now to answer your points:

1) Depending on your Server, PvP is a very big portion of the game, however can be 100% avoided if you wanted too. Normal servers and RP servers do not allow ganking (i.e. opposite faction can't attack you unless you physically enable yourself for pvp or accept a duel whichi s not to the death ... /pvp). As for guilds/realms, that I can't be too much help with, as most of my WoW dealing are with AO people. Maestrom and Emerald Dream i have had some fun with. Lothar, I don't play enough there to get to know people.

2) Yes it is a fantasy based, with a lot of references to pop culture. Some love this, while other hate it. Its more of a personal preference. I love the easter eggs regarding other games ... hell you can even do the Linkin Quest which follows a story similar to the legend of zelda and in the end you get Link's Sword and Shield (which look very badass IMO). Mindless frag fest ... that I haven't seen, to excel in pvp (unless your a warlock/rogue) takes a lot of player skill. Its not the q+aimshot+alpha+healgraft+rootgraft that AO is. All classes are very closely balanced ... however Warlocks do have an edge against most and are down right feared enemies. PvP in WoW involves movement, placement, timing, and stragegy that AO just doesn't not give for PvP.

3) Horde vs. Alliance is most definately not good vs. evil. Both sides regard themselves as "good" (except for Undead). The horde even have the most peaceful and truly "good" race in the whole game according to lore with the Tauren. Humans are corrupt, Orc are driven by Honor, Night Elves are Elitist (i.e. my shit don't stink). and so on. If time is spent actually looking for hidden pieces of the storylines that are literally hidden through out the game and one must discover on their own if they want. You will find a HUGE backstory and very interesting things about the races (i literally spent over a month just exploring finding hidden books throughout the world piecing together storylines). It just the fact of the matter most people don't put in the effort to find such hidden gems, and just play the game at face value. There most definately is a great story, one just has to find it, its not handed to you on a platter and that is what I like.

4) Normally I would agree with you on this, but I will counter in that it is one of the smoothest and mechanically sound games out there. All games have a high and low point, all will eventually fade, doesn't make them better or worse. Also if are playing a game just because everyone else does, and you don't like it .... stop playing and save your hard earned money.

I played a Taruen Druid to 60 on Proudmoore... started raiding with my old aussie guild 2 nights a week (they had been here since game launch) .... after some 6 weeks of raiding I have lost interest.. My druid has 5/8 T1 Armor and 4/8 T2 armor... Raids just got boring... only so many times you can down Nefarian...Twin Emps... (Naxx was fun though) before the game loses its appeal.

The PvP can be fun sometimes.. but too many kids for me..

So the account is closed.... working for 12 hours a week to maybe get a slightly better piece of armor is not my idea of character development...
Okay - so in TBC we get to go to level 70... what then?

I dunno negs. There is still that repetative nature to it. For me as priest it was. Attack, throw up shield, fear, wand, refresh shield, heal, fear, wand. And that was about it really. There are certain races that won't be too effected by that. But while stragity is involved it really isn't too terribly different then AO.

i played it for awhile, i had a mid level undead warlock, it was cool for a change when i was burnt out on ao, but after a bit i just didnt care much about the story, or when the next chance i had to raise my fishing skill, it does look nice and run smooth, but it wasnt very deep as far as character development, i mean, there are soooooooooooooooo many lvl 60's all around and the game is only 2 years old, AO is going on its 5th year and there isnt as many 220's as level capped players in WoW, it was a nice deversion, but nothing more

yes the lvl60's abound.. he has like 5 characters 4 are various lvl 60s and he started on a rouge? anyhow managed to play that for a month telling me and showing me various things... its lvl 47 now pfft power gamer. me, Ive been in AO for nearly 18 months my main had a 1yr ding and is currently sitting at 130, when I level I get a fistful of levels, distribute the ip get new imps and upgrade the armor a tad and sit for a few months and enjoy the RP and the overall AO community... I'm happy with AO :) (the fact that I preffer sci-fi is not what keeps me in AO, its just what got me into AO to start;) )

I spend alot of time soloing, or leveling with friends.

i love the story lines

and yes pvp happens, the server i'm on i can get ganked which is annoying, but more fun to blow kisses at the horde i see in neutral towns.

now battlegrounds are FUN, you know i'm not huge into pvp, but having a goal and not just go kill ppl is fun, having to capture the flag or capture resources adds an element to pvp which i like.

and the cinematic trailer rocks for the new expansion.

Negs, you have an excellent point, yet it got me thinking about what a horrible system AO is in PvP with what prof is nerfed, which ones need to be nerfed, its not fair that such and such can do this or that etc. I play a doctor and quite honestly kinda agreed with some of the points but for the most part remitted that its all how you play your profession etc.

You know with LE and the prof vs prof specific skill line, it got me thinking, perhaps a good PvP system is one in which everyone is not on the same skill level all evenly matched. Perhaps the best system is one in which you are stronger against certain tactics and horribly weak at others. I dont think a doctor should be able to take down an enforcer... at best that match up should simply go on for hours and end in a stalemate. I'm starting to (I think) discover the hidden theory behind PvP in Anarchy. Besides how in reality could a tarot card reader defeat a cowboy in hand to hand mortal combat? inequality ftw!

I happen to agree with Sporkleet though I acualy play the game myself.
I here Negzy and how there are AO people over there but if your not there playing with AO people than who is over there??
I have two RL friends who I'm on both there servers but for the most part I always get lonely, I try to talk to people on the streets and they run by. I wave to random people and nothing is said back to me. I play online games for comunacation with other people, If I wanted to play alone I would play consol games. I just dont feel that AO friendly admaspher over there.
It bugs me that I cant talk to the other side, how can you make a great storyline if the other side is completly offlimits its bascly make jesturs or kill them.
Also a lvl 60 can gank a lvl 1! I dont think that is realy fair there should be some type of PVP range in WoW like there is in AO
Only pluss side of WoW I have found it the prest have a shild and I wish AO Docs had that abilaty then a Doc would not always be a sitting duck.
IF I'm in the fighting mood being on WoW for an hr or so is okay but in the end a game with out GSP to chill out to when I'm done fighting it just plan lame :)
