Roleplaying and ethical concerns.

Postby Fishi3 » Thu Nov 30, 2006 6:39 pm

I started to roleplay on the internet many many years ago. When I first started it was on the message bases of local area BBS's. Later I moved into the internet and the MUSH, Mud, MOO phenominon. Roleplay on message bases and particularly on the Mushes was highly interactive, and immersive, not to mention addictive. You didn't just play at a role you lived it for hours at a time. One of the side effects of this was that table top roleplay with it's tendancy for players to break character and tell off color jokes lost alot of interest for me. I wanted to live inside my characters head while I roleplayed and I couldn't find a table top group that was that Immersive.

Mmorpgs aren't anywhere near as immersive dispite the added graphical factor. Simply because they follow the MUD model of having automated mobs rather the MUSH model of every character being a player and GM's running interactive scenes.

All of which has caused me in my typical ramble to wander off topic...

Ok because of ethical concerns cause by my not wanting to delude people who I consider friends in Real life I'm going to break character and admit to some realities.

First off I'm male. I started playing female characters years ago as a roleplaying exercise and discovered that people treated female charcters alot betterr than male characters. I've been playing female characters almost exclusively ever since. Women also have a culture within the normal culture of our society thats based on compassion rather than the mocking macho of male society. This subculture can be amazingly addictive as it seems almost civilized compared to the male subculture. :)

I'm 43 years old. Theres a certain amount of hardening of the opinions that happens when you get older that I try hard to avoid. So far I've avoided most of that though I do occaisionally have moments when I wonder why each generation thats come after mine has beeen more stupid than the last.

Damn kids get off my lawn! :)

One of the defences I use has been to amplify the paranoia I suffer about giving contact info to people. I actually am a bit of a hermit but I'm not quite the lives in the basement and never sees the sun type. I walk under the sun all the time. I get out and see rl friends. I just don't get out and make new friends anymore. The vast majority of friendships I've found to be transitory and I've hit a point in my life where going out and making the effort to invest in a new and untried person isn't worth the effort to me.

If any of that changes how you feel or see me well I'm sorry. I'm still the me I always was and always will be.

Fixed typos. Fixed more Typos. Fixed yet more typos. OMG the horror the horror yet more typos fixed!

You're a dude?

Dude! It's over!

Er, wait...

It never started. ;)

Seriously, I don't think this sorta thing is uncommon or worth worrying over. I do, however, think it's a cool thing to be honest when RL friendships/relationships evolve.

Cheers!

I knew there was something fishi about fishi ! hahahaha I couldn't resist!

*ducks the bad pun remarks*

still, much <3 fishi !

The truth shall set ye free, unless confessing to a federal offense in which case your looking at 25 to LIFE. So... male ok, 43 ok, twelve bodies in the crawlspace under your house... I'd keep that information to myself.

That's all cool :) I have to say, I don't usually think about actual gender in game beyond character gender (there are some people I still think of as actually being troxes ;) ) but if I'd been asked I would have guessed you were female (that's a compliment, of course!)

So my only question is, should it come up, would you prefer to be referred to by male or female pronoun on here? (guessing it's definitely female in game...)

After all, it's always good to know whether to say *pounces on Fishi3 and spanks her* or *pounces on Fishi3 and spanks him*

As for gender refrences thats up to you. I'm not bothered by either. Yes online and in game I'm playing a role so her is appreciated. On the forums it's ok either way. Since forums are me chatting to you ooc'ly He would be proper but since most people identify with the character she is acceptable.

Myz I definately take the fact that you considered me female as a compliment. Same goes for you Lykeios.

Veldron. I've never been into cybering simply because if I had been there would be some very akward feeling people right about now. I try to avoid causing anyone I like to question something as intrical as their own sexuality.

Oh and Lykeios Chaimera has been so consistantly kicking my arse in DOW that it's made me question my right to call my self L337. I'm wondering if something about DC doesn't cause problems with the standard game engine as I've noticed a marked lack of effectiveness in my troops. Curses how can my Waugh wipe humanity off the face of the universe if my guns don't kill people?

So if Fishi3 was RL female then she'd have an excuse to have her butt kicked? Cos, you know, girls can't play computer games...

Boy, you realise you now are gonna get your butt kicked by me, and pretty much everyone else on here, male or female?

I had my doubts, but I don't spend much time worrying over such things. I'm usually too distracted by hot pixels to care. ;)

Not to sound mean or uncompassionate ... but I don't care.

Guy, chick .. who cares? You are who you are, penis or breasts don't change how you act as a person.

Haha... Me too! I still think of Schuy as a Trox everytime I talk to him online (for those of you that remember Schuy).

And Fishi... Lots of people don't show anything about who they "really" are on the forums or in the game. There is nothing wrong with that, and you shouldn't feel bad or ashamed or anything.

There are people that I have talked to for YEARS online, including messager programs and games, that I have no idea what country they live in, what they look like or anything about them and who they are in the flesh. Doesn't bother me any because they are who they are, and I love the conversation I have with them when I talk to them online.

You are still the Fishi we all love and doesn't matter to me... I would bend you over my knee and spank you either way. *warms her hand up for some spankin's* Myz I got next! ;)

Meh?

Postby Fishi3 » Fri Dec 01, 2006 11:59 pm

Well I've never been ashamed or anything about being a guy who plays female characters. To feel shame over it I'd have to have gender identity issues and I don't. I'm secure in my selfness. I'm me and who else could I be? I didn't declare my true gender for any reason other than it was time. I have close friends in AO who want to know me better which means talking in chat programs. photographs and etc. I'm rather paranoid about letting people get close to me so it took me awhile to allow myself to want to in fact be able to allow for closer friendships. Thats the sum and total of it.

You know what you are comfortable with though and when you are comfy with it you will let is show! We don't mind either way!
