I really don't find that funny.....
I know they made a game out of it, but that was actual events of D-Day. Something quite heroic went on there and I'm not one for taking anything away from my brothers before me.

I mean, all the greatest jokes refer to, or are inspired by, RL events. Most of which are grim...

The spanish inquisition tortured and killed uncounted numberes of people. But it's still one of the funniest Monthy Python scetches ever. I don't think any harm will come from making fun of RL events. As long as you do it in a... Shall we say, tastefull, manner.

Especially not when it's making fun of a movie... Not D-Day itself.

I can think of a hundred jokes I find hilarious, that all poke fun of something that can be related to something bad. But why not just see it for what it is... A rather funny joke, and not a ridicule of all the people who suffered.

I'll give an example, and thus kill of my favourite joke atm. (Explaining jokes kills them... And that makes baby jesus cry)

A russian and an american submarine general were standing in a submarine hanger, discussing who's sub's were better.
The russian says:
"Our submarine, can go 2 years without coming up for air!"
The american looks at him and laughs.
"Bah! That's nothing. Our submarine can go for ten years without coming up for air!"
All of a sudden, while they're talking, a third submarine emerges between the two, and the hatch opens. Out comes a man dressed in black and says:
"Heil Hitler! Haben sie Diesel?"

Now I'm sure somewhere, somehow, someone will find it offensive on some lvl... Someone always does. But I mean... Come now. It's a joke. It's totally harmless, and doesn't hurt anybody. If you want to be offended by it, then I guess you can be, but it should be obvious, that the aim isn't to ridicule the Nazi's or anyone affected by them... It's simply to tell a silly story, and make people smile.
The same can be said about that GiF.

I think people sometimes, are a bit too eager to take offense to things.
But I guess that's the beauty of humour... It has no rules. We all percieve it differently, and I'd not want it any other way... It is food for thought tho'...

Anyway, I thought that was funny... Despite having seen it a long time ago. Always makes me smile ^^

In fact the soldier isn't doing a Vulcan greeting as the Vulcan greeting is to split the two middle fingers. The Vulcan greeting is actually a blessing used by Rabbi in Synagoge as Leonard Nimoy explained once in an interveiw.


I worked with a man named John who was a sailor on one of the Jeep carriers that was part of the fleet that took part in the D day landing. John was in his eighties and it weighed heavily upon him that he had been forced when German soldiers tried a boarding action against his carrier to shoot and kill at least one of those Germans. Very little is ever said about the German resistance at D-Day except to talk about how supply lines were cut and reinforcements couldn't get to the Beaches in Normandy. German resistance was stiff and bloody and the cost on both sides of the conflict was high on a physical and spiritual level.

I think Robert Heinlein succintly surmises humor in his book "Stranger in a Strange Land"....from which I will paraphrase.

Humor is ALWAYS at the cost of someone/thing else. I've tried and tried, but I can't find a single joke that doesn't belittle someone/thing. Its a uniquely human thing...we laugh at others' misfortune. I'm not saying its a bad thing...I think its a coping mechanism and possibly a somewhat twisted form of sympathy/empathy.

But I took some advil pm earlier and am feeling kinda loopy, so I'm not sure anything I just wrote made any sense.
