I, Robot (Spoiler Warning)

Postby Tacz » Sat Jul 17, 2004 3:49 am

Well, today, I went to see "I, Robot" with my friends. Heres my opinion :D :

1. A robot can not harm a human being, or through inaction allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey all orders given by a human being, unless it conflicts with the first law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence, unless conflicting with the first two laws.

Sounds like fun :D

First thoughts - Before Movie: Another Will Smith movie? Based loosely on an Isaac Asimov book? Whooey! Crapfest 2004! I just finished reading the book, and I read NOTHING of a robot murdering a person. Looks like Starship Troopers all over again.

How WRONG I was...

After Movie: I think the German lady from "Super Troopers" said it best, when she said "Yippee kay-ey, mutha f*cka". The combat was great, with a nice blend of martial arts and blazing barrels. The movie blended good amounts of drama, action, and comedy.

Kid: "DUDE! She just shot the robot next to you with her eyes closed!"
Spooner: "Did you just shoot at the robot next to me with your eyes closed!?"
Dr. Calvin: "Well, yea..."

The story begins with Will Smiths character, Detective Spooner, of the NYPD (with a tremendous prejudice toward robots), being called to a homicide of a prominent researcher working for USR (United States Robots). After investigation, it seems that the doctor was killed by a robot of the doctors own making. The robot suspect eventually leads the detective to the robots plans to take over to serve the first law more exactly, claiming that with robots in charge, humans would be even more safe (Campbells condensed plot, its much more complex). Long story short, Will Smith and his cast of co-stars are trying to stop the robots from taking over. Although it sounds as if its an over-used plot, the story goes about it quite well, and it is still quite a good movie. The combat is reminiscent of "The Matrix," and Will Smith kicks some serious ass :D . Some people complained about the plot being too complicated, but thats only if your weren't paying attention :? .

Oh, and I forgot, it had NOTHING to do with the book, but it was still good enough not to piss me off that much, and they had some things carry over from the book.

Just went and saw it last night with 'lynx and Katy.

OMG it was good. In the words of Will Smith "That rates a 9.5 on my wierd-s*&%-o-meter". (diff movie of course)

One of my fave quotes from I, Robot:

Spoon: *inhales, nods to himself in that Will Smith fashion* Somehow..."I told you so?"...it just doesn't quite do it....

Haven't seen it yet (no clue when it hits theatres here).
There is a older movie called I, Robot too this one might be based on that one. plus they used Asimovs famouts Three Laws for robot design. (the 3 laws are normally embedded into the core design of the robot, and no other limitations)

AFAIK the story behind it all is a friend of Asimov and Mr. Isac Asimov
talked about the issue of robots being crazy like killers in all movies so far.
Then Asimov decided he wanted a new type of robots, a safe type.
Thus he came up wit the 3 laws of robotics/AI. which many scientists find a good guideline today for the core ruleset even.

Naturaly Asimov later on in his books pushed the limits orf his laws
and like thousands of years later the robots had self improved and a odd Zeroth law (think thats what it's called) appeared.
That law (sort of naturaly evovled by the robots) allowed the robots to override the 3 laws if humanity was in danger due to a human.
(sort of like a police law if ya will)

I have a Asimov book, but can't recall (without checking) it's title.
It might have been sorta in the middle of Asimovs robot series of books timeframe wise.

Oh. as a sidenot, just saw Paycheck today. HIGHLY recommended, better imo than Minority Report. :)

I liked Paycheck too, even thought I think Uma is a bit of a flake. Philip K. Dick stories are kind of a bitch to translate to screen though. I was a sucker for Minority Report. I loathe how critics seem to hate any science fiction movie that has a semi-complicated plot.....AI is another good example of a really great movie that people seemed to go DUH....I don't get it. Props to the smart peeps that take their brain to the cinema, instead of just their popcorn.

was paycheck the one with reverse engineering, braincooking and looks in the future?

I took some of the opinions here and went into the movie expecting a pretty good entertainment value. I wasn't disappointed.

Will Smith has done a few stinker movies lately, but this one seemed to fit him pretty well. While it was a bit overly animated (I kinda get tired of special effects and such) the matrix-combat feel to the movie really hit home.

Anyway, it took the top spot from Spiderman this weekend. Definately a good movie to check out this summer, and worth your money in the theatre. Just make sure you sit in the center of the theater, rather than the top row in the stadium seating all the way in the left corner where the sound isn't the best.

And avoid bringing females who drink one sip of soda and they have to use the rest room every 5 minutes.

I disliked paycheck. because it was too glossy, and ben lost character tooo much... I mean he's an engineer right, sumthin like that and he picks up a gun, rides motorcycles, and does all that stuff, and the *evil* people seemed too stereotypical. and the good guys as well. I did however, appreciate the concepts. I think I might go see I-robot. I really cant wait until some guy with tons of money puts it into a cyberpunk movie, and make it good. minority report was good, But I could ask for something like a movie of The Stars My Destination. or the enders series. I bet it'd be the new lotr, if they came out with the enders series in movies.
where is that thing anyways!
