Untrue. I played/coded MUDs for 10 years and never, in any MUD, did I hear your character being called as "Avatar".

And AO isn't Ultima Online either. ^_^

Too sleepy to go into more depth, I can only talk of my own experience, which is rather extensive when talking about MUDs.

As can only I...and as is mine. :)

Nevertheless, no matter which way you slice it, there was no point in the debate that calling it a "toon" is even remotely cool, and yes, a human pointer presence in a computer network has ALWAYS been referred to as an avatar, no matter what the format of that network. You can nitpick out the detail of MUDs and it still filters down to the same problem: "toon" is dumb, and there's already an applicable term.

(and no, at no point in the entire history of the internet has the word avatar ever been plunked with a limiter of it referring to "everything except games with stats", because again, that would mean by counterpoint that "toon" also refers to characters in muds, which would be paradoxically MORE stupid than it is already)

... and Im sure you drove your horseless carriage to work this morning?

Seriously though, my little guys are always toons. Always have been, always will be. The thought of anyone having an anurism over that fact, is reason enough to continue to do so. Bonus points that its Tarryk. :P

I'm going to remember you said that next time you display a pet peeve for anything at all. ;)

So basically: You're not arguing it's legitimacy, you're not trying to make it sound like anything more than the kiddified stupidity that it is, you're just going to call it that because you can and because it ticks me off.

That's the only arguement for using it that I can possibly bow out to. Check and mate, I'm off to buy a new horse. ;)

I don't see why it's the biggest deal. I know we've had this come up before and then I believe I said I usually referred to my ingame persona as a char. The here I used toon in my post. Personally it's not a major thing I consider too much and partially depends upon the situation, how/what I'm thinking at the time and the prevailing winds.

Essentially for me toon - char - and avatar are all pretty much synonymous.

We have language, and language gives us many ways to express sometimes the exact same idea. Ask me how I feel. I could say I felt peachy, or fine, or good, or O.K. all from feeling exactly the same way. True, to some extent the words we chose slightly define things, but should I start calling an orange a petunia tomorrow it'd still be an orange(petunia). I could call it a Tarryk and it'd still be an orange(Tarryk). It's appearance wouldn't be altered, nor would it's taste or texture.

And apart from all that some people just talk differently and that's a good thing. We are not all homogenous. And I think everyone can agree that's a good thing.

I'll be on the streets of Rubi-Ka later on if you want to challenge my char to a duel.

Very true, never argued otherwise.

And this is essentially that. Half the world started calling oranges petunias, and everyone's arguement for it is "why not?" My answer? Because it's not a %$*&ing petunia. :)

Much as I really don't care Tk does bring up a good point and I think one word sums it up very succintly.

Avatar.

But this is not Bugs Bunny Online, nor is it Virtual Disney. They are not toons. They are AVATARS: Visual representations of persona.

This has been your daily dose of insane psycho-moderator hangups. Thank you. :)

Holy crap T-man!
Actually, when I came back to AO, people had been slinging around "toon" like pancakes. I didn't know if I was animated or playing a game.

Glad to see someone still has some sensabilities. :P
