Maybe I'm evil.. maybe I'm just cold hearted and cruel.. But I've never once been able to feel sympathy for someone who took their own life. God does the taking.. doing it yourself is for the weak and I personally don't think there will be any peace with this man. Killing, even if it is yourself, is still murder.

The only sympathy I can find in my heart is for the innocent fans. It always sucks to lose someone you idolize. So to the fans who are grieving.. Sorry to hear. :(

Yes, indeed a sad thing. I just had to send him a tribute with Velvet Acid Christ, last night.

I can't say I'm surprised, Thompson was an intense man and wasn't likely to "fade away" like a worn out lightbulb. He lived a life harder than most, with a bizarre quality that a lot of his fans, readers, and even enemies found magical. Whatever his reasons for doing so, may he RIP.

Well you can only wonder what all those drugs would have done to him over time, maybe he's better off. Here's to a brilliantly twisted departed.

well there are actually 2 viewpoints to the matter of suicide:

selbstmord: for the weak and afraid that aint able to handle life.
freitod: for the brave and honestly that give themself for there loved ones or there name and honor

neither of this is something to be sad about.

well maybe if it was someone you knew/liked it is apropriate to be sad about the fact that he is gone. and htis leads me to the question:
who was that guy? I ve never heard about him.

Something about Hunter S. Thompson that most people don't realize... he redefined journalism and started an entire movement that totally changed the way reporters today write their stories. There are a lot of other sources on the net for more information on this, but he was a lot more than a drugged up eccentric with a typewriter.

Thompson was brilliant, it's sad that he's gone but there is no call for any other sorrow IMO.

The funniest thing I ever heard about him was when Depp was staying with him before Fear and Loathing was made. Depp wanted all his maneurisms right so he'd follow Hunter around his own house (Depp stayed in the basement) mocking his every move and Depp actually freaked out Hunter at times because of how accurate it would become. I have a friend who is partially obsessed with the oddities of HST so I've heard too many things to sort rumors from reality, but that one I've heard slight variations from several sources including interviews with Depp.

In a final note i'll leave with a quote from a user at Fark.com on this news article I thought was truly fitting.

Suicide is a typically tragic event. I think this time, though, we ought to consider the facts a little more.

HST was a total iconoclast
HST was a maverick, and more
HST wrote Fear and Loathing because he opposed the surrender of control (through drugs)
HST had to have things his way...including death.

He died the same way he lived, in as much control as he could. We'll never forget his life, and he'll never lose impact.
