To put this into proper perspective, $12K is 1/4 of the down payment on a 350K house.

I'd say the man is out of his mind.

I'd also say that the girl in question is a complete twit.

I wouldn't marry him simply because any man who'd put 1/4th of the down payment of a house down on a ring has his priorities drastically out of synch with reality. I like my men sane.

I refused a ring. I find them impractical and more than vaguely silly. I do not understand women who obsess on wedding rings. Even if jewelry grade diamonds weren't the product of extreme suffering and poverty, I'd still not wear one. They are not aesthetically pleasing IMHO.

I never needed a ring to make my relationship real. If a relationship requires a ring (or ANY overly ostentatious display of wealth, for that matter) to be real or worthy, it isn't and can never be.
