Present Your Opinion: Best SciFi Movie of All-Time?

Postby Boinky » Mon Oct 01, 2007 6:59 am

Alright I was watching a DVD tonight, and my DVD player has a function to capture an image from a movie and save it as the default image shown when a DVD isn't in or a DVD is paused. Had this player for many, many years. When I first got it I grabbed the image of Brandon Lee as The Crow (the movie he died making) in the scene where he was silhouetted in the broken window of the apartment where he and his girlfriend were killed in the story after he came back from the dead. Then slightly later I bought Contact and put the image of Jodie Foster's character floating in the transport thingee, and a little later after the X-Men move came out on DVD I put the image of Wolverine with his arms extended and claws retracted on top of the Statue of Liberty on as the image.

So anyway I left that one there for all these years till tonight. I decided I needed to change it, and I knew the best thing. It's an iconic image from what I will present as the best Sci-Fi movie of all time. The first meeting of Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in the carbon freeze chamber of Bespin City with lightsabers clashing. That's the image on my DVD player now.

So anyway, I say for myself, the best SciFi movie of all time is The Empire Strikes Back. Arguably it is the best of all 6 Star Wars movies, and Star Wars is one of the greatest SciFi movie franchises or single movies of all time. Though I admit that the lightsaber action sequences in Phantom Menace are better, but only because they had about 20 years to perfect lighsaber battle choreography.

What do you think is the best SciFi movie of all time and why?

So incredibly hard to pick just one favorite.. I like so many Sci Fi movies!

If it had to be just one though... I would chose Ridley Scott's Blade Runner. (Do Androids dream of Electric Sheep?)

The Story, The Acting, The cinematography, the music are, all absolutely second to no other... Harrison Ford shines as Deckard, Rutger Hauer gives his finest performance ever.. Darryl hannah is just plain hawt! Sean Young plays the part of the replicant-that-doesn't-know-she-is-one just beautifully!
All the action taking place over the brilliant sounds of Vangelis at his best!

Picking just one film to be an all time favourite sci-fi film, is an exercise in futility for me, I enjoy most of them, and on such different levels.. Yes, Starwars is a great series and Empire was the best of that series.. But it lacks something that other films make up for.

Bladerunner, an absolute classic, saw it first when I wasn't even into double digits, thought it was great then, still think it's pretty fantastic now.

Dune, though missing huge parts of the storyline, and often slated by people for being wrong on so many levels, I find it, to be a true cult great.

Alien, another masterpiece from Ridley Scott..

And what about films like Silent Running, or even Disney's Black Hole?

Perhaps I should go further back.. The Day The Earth Stood Still anyone?

I cannot answer this question.. too many to choose from, to many variables.

My favorite? Bladerunner.

Star Wars (classic, NOT prequel) are a good contender, as are Firefly.

Firefly for me this is still an amazing inventive story... each time I watch I see something new that I missed the last ten times or so I watched it...The story line the acting and the music were are fantastic ...

*ponders*................................................................................................................................................................................................................................*ponders some more*...............................................................................*sighs*

Not a question that can be answered in it's present form.

First Sci-Fi is a diverse Genre, then you have Movies that are "great" for Different reasons.

People have Mentioned Star Wars, Blade Runner, Alien, how about 2001, or even *hides* ET, Close Encounters... list goes on. All were "Great" in their own way.

Hard for me to answer this one personally, because I really have to separate sci-fi into subgenres. Cyberpunk is not Space Opera. Space Opera is not Hard SciFi. Etc etc.

If I (reluctantly) lump them all together, Serenity wins it hands-down, because it's the most viewer-friendly and rewatchable to me.

Close contenders would include Sunshine, The Matrix (1), Star Trek: Nemesis, and Virtuosity.

I think I need to compile a personal top 10 or something, maybe during lunch today. :P

It is not easy to pick just one movie over others. Like someone said, Sci-fi is a huge genre.

Still, for the best sci-fi movie, I would pick Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.
Because it is a nice and funny movie as itself, but also because it is stempunk/alternate history. Subgenre which I like, and it is quite rare in movies. (I mean, maybe Terminator movies can be seen as alternate history now, but just barely)

Being a fan of old black and white films. I'd have to pick "Things to Come." (1936) or "Frankenstein" (1931)

Seriously? Personally I thought that movie was one of the worst Star Treks, right up there with Undiscovered Country *shudders at thought of naked uhura* and The Voyage Home...

... moving along... for me... Blade Runner definitely top 5, ST2 The Wrath of Kahns up there somewhere.... but I think... currently... Transformers (either the original or the recent live action version)

Star Trek is definitely a matter of varied personal taste, because of what they are by nature. While I don't agree with them, I know people who think Voyage Home and Undiscovered Country were the best out of all of them to date because they're more "campy and fun" than the others.

Personally, I can't really put Nemesis in my top 10 faves, I don't think any of the Star Trek's can go there. But out of the lot, I have to say I enjoyed Nemesis the most, followed closely by Generations and First Contact.

No way in hell I can pick just one film. Not sure I can even list just 5.

Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
THX 1138 (my personal favorite from Lucas)
Alien and Aliens (they both had completely different feels to them.)
War of the Worlds (remake) - Better captured the feel of the book for me then the first one did.
Children of Men - Yes, it's more of a drama but if falls into the dystopia category of sci-fi. It might not have flashy technology but dear lord was it not an amazing movie. Quite possibly the best movie that came out in 2006.
The Fifth Element - how the hell has no one mentioned this one yet?

tough one for me too. I think I'll have to base it on how many times I've wanted to watch a movie. My top choices in no specific order would have to be.....

Serenity
Matrix
Dune "2000" (Not really a movie, but a miniseries. I bought it all as one and when I do watch it I usually don't stop till the end so I'm counting it. :P)
Ultraviolet
The Chronicles of Riddick

Those are all movies I like enough to watch over and over again. :)
