How to enable the web browser in Anarchy Online

Postby Gridfan » Sun Jun 28, 2015 3:46 pm

It is actually possible to enable the in-game web browser in Anarchy Online.

All you need to do is do a tiny edit in the Anarchy Online preferences file, and then configure a hotkey for the in-game browser.

Here is a step by step walkthrough:

  • Start Anarchy Online Launcher.
  • Click on "Settings".
  • Click on "GUI" tab.
  • Click on "Open" button for scripts to open a folder window.
  • Close the launcher "Settings" window.
  • Close/quit the launcher.

  • In the folder window go up (back) a step to the parent "Anarchy Online" folder.
  • Click on the "Prefs" folder.
  • Open the "Prefs.xml" file in notepad or another text editor.

Make sure neither the launcher nor the game is running as they will overwrite the preferences file, resetting your changes. Once you have changed the setting the launcher and the game will respect and remember it, so you only need to do this once.

The following is the only thing you need to change in the file Prefs.xml
  • Locate the line: <Value name="EnableWebBrowser" value="false" />
  • Change it to: <Value name="EnableWebBrowser" value="true" />

  • Save the changes to the file.
  • Close the folder window.

  • Start Anarchy Online Launcher.
  • Start the game.
  • Login with a character.

  • When in-game press F10 to bring up the in-game settings.
  • Click on the "Key bindings" tab.
  • Scroll down until you find "Windows Browser".
  • Most likely the hotkey is set to "Inactive"
  • Select "Windows Browser" and click the "Change" button.
  • Now choose which key to bind the browser window to.

In my case the "Home" key was used for nothing else so it was a convenient choice.

Now just close the preferences window and try to press your chosen hotkey. If all worked as intended you should now see a browser window open, showing the Anarchy Online website. To surf to other web pages simply click on the URL field and edit it.

What web pages would you want to surf to in-game? Well, how about player.gridstream.org where you can make requests and see the title of the current/previous songs.

Since the web browser is turned off by default there may be some tweaking left to do with it, hopefully Funcom will enable it by default in the near future (ask them nicely on the official AO forums to do so).
