Building my own Kodiak!

Alright,

I'm quiet new to the 3D rendering world, not very good at it yet but I've got the basics down!

I was thinking of making a cool vehicle and I wanted to combine this with Anarchy Online.

I find the coolest vehicle in Anarchy Online to be the Kodiak. It would be great if we could drive this thing around in real size.

So I've decided to make one of my own, just for fun and practice.

I find it very difficult to draw over the model so I have decided to create one from scratch.

I want to keep you guys up to date on my progress, I hope you can appreciate this :)

I will be adding posts with my progress.

Find the ultimate goal below attached!

Alright, here's what we've got so far!

The proportions aint exactly right but, it will do for now.

- Slight changes to the nose.

- Added curve moving inside for the canopy.

- Closed the bottom part.

This concludes the first part, on to the next (tomorrow).

- Added slight bevel at the bottom that turns back in.

Next: Shoulder compartment!

Alright, this might look a bit funny but you should understand the concept when looking at the original Kodiak.

I've created the bottom part of the nose. This will be black with engine parts. The shoulder parts looks less odd now also.

Silly question for you... I'm very curious as I'm seeing the progression of this project. Are you taking a class or something for this? Or did you just decide one day that you'd really like to try your hand at this, and are teaching yourself?

I ask because I love learning new software, and have always sort of wondered if it's possible to teach yourself to use 3D graphics software. I've only ever had trouble learning 3 different programs - MS Access (which I did eventually take some classes on), Dreamweaver (probably because I don't know much about html), and believe it or not... Photoshop, but that's because I was pretty new to computers when I tried to learn it, and I failed so miserably I've been skeered to try it again. Lol

Working on the engine compartment. This will consist of the part you see, another part which holds the exhaust and also the 'hood' on top.

Spark, nice to see your interest :)

I basically just installed Blender 3D and decided I'd play around with this stuff. I watched 1 video explaining some of the basics.

I needed some help with the layout (buttons ans shortcuts) and the names for things.

The video explained to me what vertices, faces, edges were and how I should not use buttons but use shortcut keys etc ( R for resize X for X axis Y for Y axis, G for grab, X for X axis Y for Y axis) stuff like that.

After this video I played around, did lots of silly things and now this is my first what I concider to be "serious" project :D

PS. I failed a thousand times and had lots of "I GIVE UP!" moments but that comes with the learning process I guess :)

I'd like to add to the above that if you're a person to fantasize, 3D modeling can be a really nice way to express what is in your mind.

Like some people will do it through writing or drawing, 3D modeling works the exact same way.

This is why I like it so much but I'm still so very new and know so little, you can really make it as complex as you want to.

While this proves to be difficult, it is also a challenge 8)

wow thats awesome!

I always thought 3d modelling was fun (even if tedious), back in high school I made a few (very terrible) rifle and pistol models using 3DS Max for an fps/adventure game we where making in an afterschool club (that never got finished :P ) so i know how much work it takes to get anything, let alone something that look as great as the Kodiak you're working :D Keep it up!!

Thank you kindly for the compliments!

Had to go out and do some stuff but finally managed to get some more work into the model :D

I've finished the 'hood' or the 'shark fins' what ever you would like to call them.

I will still need to shrink the rear end of the engine compartment (the big block) to fit the exhaust and other stuff.

I might also try to make the nose less pointy, looking at the original Kodiak this is the only thing that really stands out as being different. It's too pointy and long. I'll leave this for later though.

Changed the rear engine part a bit. Connects better to the shoulder part now and the end is also smaller.

Next will be to add the last engine part with the exhaust.

Alright, engine is all done if you ask me. I wanted to add some mesh complexity but the rest will be done by texture later on.

Going to have a good look at the overall model and see what I want changed or added.

Suggestions are really welcome at this point.

Bottom part of the cockpit was pretty square. Added more curve to fit the original Kodiak.
