Music Libraries

Postby Nopheros » Sun Jan 27, 2013 9:56 pm

To my fellow DJs but any audiophile really..

How do you like to organize your music folder? Recently (more like the past six months) my folder has gotten out of control, especially with my RL DJ'ing career skyrocketing, so I have been debating what to do as far as organization. I was debating genre but then I was think organizing it by event like 'Nightclub', 'Wedding', 'Kids Party', etc.

What do you guys do and what do you find successful?

I have mine broken down into subgenres. There are a TON of metal subgenres though, so I have some grouped together (example - Thrash & Groove Metal). It's worked well enough for me. I have an "Unsorted" folder that I keep songs in until I can preview them and organize them properly (which I try to do on a weekly basis).
I may be retired, but I'm GridStream for life.

As I don't care for all the subgenres in metal, I just use the ABC to sort my metal music. Then I have a folder called Not Metal, a folder called Misc and one folder called Sillyness (which mainly holds Monty Python). It's working well enough for me, so far.

libraries, what is that?

I embrace chaos  seriously, I've never used folders for my general music. I guess I'm just an oddball like that. When I do genre specific shows I do move the music I plan to draw from into a folder for that show.

I use alphabetical sort..... but then I have "music" which is where I put my sorted music. "itunes", that one's pretty obvious, and "downloads" which is where I put most stuff before it gets sorted, like anything I grab from Bandcamp or a Humble Bundle. Only problem with that is I don't sit down and sort my music that often so I have about 3-6 folders open w hen I'm DJing. My talk lives are usually on my desktop, my promos are in another folder altogether, sometimes CD rips end up somewhere else, anything I ripped from my laptop ends up on a flash drive... etc. It's kind of a chaotic mess, but I know where everything is lol.

I'm not even hiding it. I'm still listed as Dragon on my facebook page and was what I was planning to be when the game launched.

a filing system for what i have...... lets call it an organised case of folders, cd wallets and random vinyl, BUT i know where everything is when i need it :P Example, i have a Wallet case with 100 cd's in, all of them are my regular tunes, then another for instant floor fillers, you get what i mean :P
